Willow vaguely remembered Jimmy from Flint. She had seen him maybe once or twice, but the name had been thrown around quite a lot. And that was from the perspective of someone who spent most of her time in a makeshift hospital bed. This was her first time really seeing him talk though. He was... very animated and upbeat. Kind of like Jen, but to an even greater degree. And a lot more infallible at first glance. Of course, then he showed everyone the map and mentioned who had left it behind. "Oh God." Willow groaned and sagged her shoulders in defeat, yet couldn't help smiling at his antics regardless. "Why'd you have to remind everyone of that?" |

Jimmy wasn't Brandon's favorite person in the world. He didn't know what it was about him that rubbed him the wrong way, certainly he couldn't think of anything he could hold against the man. He was a familiar face though, and more importantly a friendly one. He'd gotten the others out of a bind and brought them along safely. Brandon had a suspicion Jimmy had come about the cure, maybe he'd come to his senses and decided saving the world was worth his time. Whatever the reason, Brandon was glad to see him. He gave the man a warm smile and a nod as he joined the others. Their group had swollen in size, but that was alright. This was either a job for a few people or a lot. They were going with a lot, and Jimmy would be a valuable addition. He was very skilled although he liked to show it off, Brandon couldn't blame him since deep down he liked to show off just as much, it was part of the satisfaction of his lessons with the others. Now that Brandon had spoken with Willow he was feeling better about everything. He wasn't left to make his peace alone. She seemed to accept what he'd done, and he would forgive her anything. They'd be okay. Better than okay, they'd be happy one day, once this was all done. Maybe even happy together, he hoped. |

“Hey, don’t worry about it,” Jimmy responded to Willow. “You know what they say, all’s well that… yada yada yada.” “There was something else,” Eli prompted him. “Of course,” Jimmy said. “I was getting to that. Annie, Jen, do you happen to remember Sergio? Good looking Latin guy I brought back to Flint a couple weeks ago? Annie, I’m sure you do.” “I remember,” Annie said. “I set his shoulder, put him in a cast. I never saw him again. I guess he didn’t stay long.” “No he did not,” Jimmy nodded. “See, the day I found him I was a diverting a horde, took a bit longer than I meant it to and I realized I was just about in Ohio. That’s when I found Mr. Serg fleeing north, running away on foot from a different horde. To make a long story short the two hordes ended up combining and I got them heading south, so sorry to the people of Ohio, if there are any.” “Uh huh,” Eli subtly prompted him again. “Anyway,” Jimmy exaggerated the word. “Sergio was headed west, wanted to get back to it. But there was his shoulder to deal with, so I told him about you and Flint. He accepted my offer to give him a ride back. He hit the road again as soon as he could.” “Where was he going?” Annie asked. “That’s what I’m getting to,” Jimmy said. “See, he came from Pennsylvania – and he saw a billboard, newly painted over. It read ‘Alive in Salt Lake City.’ Sergio had family there, so he wanted to believe it. That’s why he was in such a hurry to get moving again. Myself, I didn’t invest much credence into the sighting. This was somewhere near Harrisburg, apparently, and that’s quite a long ways from SLC. Figured it was a joke or a reference I didn’t get. But then I left Flint after that unpleasantness, ended up driving south again. There I am on a road in Ohio, something catches my eye, I slow down – it’s a billboard. Someone painted over it. ‘Alive in Salt Lake City.’ That makes me curious, and that curiosity – and other reasons – had me turning right and driving through Indiana. Sure enough, I see another billboard. ‘Alive in Salt Lake City.’. So if it is a prank, it’s a persistent one.” He paused, looked to Eli. He had the same considerate expression he had on earlier, when Jimmy first relayed this news. “Now, I don’t know what to make of all that,” Jimmy added. “If there’s a safe zone there or if there isn’t. I just know we’re headed that way, so it seemed worth mentioning.” We’re. He smiled disbelievingly when he realized he had used that word. He hadn’t exactly decided he was going to stick around yet. He had come all this way, but it wouldn’t have been out of character for him to stop by only to change his mind again. Using that word, he supposed, meant he hadn’t. For now, his mind remained made up. He clapped, indicating his little report-slash-speech was concluded. “And that’s it,” he said. “Only other thing I’d like to say is I’m forward to working with you guys. I’m sure this is the beginning of some beautiful friendships.” |

"Salt Lake City, huh?" Jen mused. She had vaguely remembered Jimmy bringing Sergio in. He did that every once in a while, bringing in the occasional straggler that he found trying to survive. Sergio had been watched closely during his stay by Spencer though, but the guy took off pretty quickly and Spencer didn't say much on the matter. No more than he usually said, anyway. Jen never knew why he left though. Nobody had mentioned anything of the sort. Though it was easy to believe. Geraldine had taken a lot of preventative measures early on during the infection to make Flint work, but it was not at all unbelievable that others would do the same. Yet at Flint they had actively tried to mask their presence to avoid bringing too much trouble their way. It seemed like Salt Lake City was trying to bring attention to itself in that case. They were either well-fortified and confident they could repel any attacks... or it was a trap to lure people in. "The gang is starting to feel a little big." Willow commented. "There is safety in numbers these days." Antonio reflected. "Smaller groups might be less likely to attack us if they see more people. It just means we will take up more supplies. Food, water, medicine..." Jen smiled in amusement; it made sense that Antonio would be worried about supplies. He didn't know Jimmy though. "I don't think we need to worry about that. Jimmy is an actual magician when it comes to finding all of that. This should be a cake walk for him compared to Flint." |

"Speaking of our supplies, we've got everything back except ammo. We could go back to Lincoln and hit their hideout to reclaim it or we can find more. I know a place we're guaranteed to find more but it'd mean a detour into northern Colorado. That would mean driving through some pretty high population cities near Denver but not actually through Denver." Brandon suggested. He hadn't been back there in years. It was a pretty town called Estes Park. Coming from a bland little place like Patterson on a huge road trip to Colorado to stay with his aunt and uncle was a fond memory. It was a trip they made every couple of years to go hunting in the Rockies. Every part of trip was special. Another bitter aspect of their current situation was that he'd been throughthis way quite a few times before, it was sad to sully those memories of these places. He wondered what pretty little Estes Park looked like now. |

“We’re not going back,” Eli cut in, sounding definitive. “But we can afford a short detour if it’ll help keep us fed and protected. An’ like Antonio said – this many of us, the upside is we’ll be a lot less tempting a target to bandits.” Jimmy grinned. “Bandits see my truck coming and they run. You’ll see.” “Let’s hope we don’t see,” Eli said, even as his expression indicated he thought that hope was a hollow one. “So north CO it is. Anybody got any other business?” Jimmy didn’t, so he looked around. Annie didn’t speak up, at least. Neither did the big guy – Emmett – who Jimmy remembered for being taciturn, even when he didn’t have a bullet wound in his side. |

"Kelsey and I are good to go." Nolan added. Ever since the little meeting had been called, Kelsey hadn't wandered too far from her older brother. It seemed that he was comfortable talking for the two of them. Though Willow knew better than anyone that Kelsey was a pretty laid back kid. It was what she liked about her. "Me too." Jen quickly followed up. Willow was pretty ready herself. Everyone had unwound a little bit and being stuck in a car with them would be a little more manageable. But Brandon had mentioned that he had something important to discuss with her. She didn't know if he wanted to tell her now or wait until later, so she glanced in his direction to see what he would say while remaining silent herself. |

Brandon noticed Willow's questioning glance and shook his head slightly. What he had to say was for her ears only. Later. he mouthed. "If that's everything then I'll need to see that map. Our next stop is Estes Park Colorado. Anyone here not seen the Rockies up close before?" Brandon asked as he extendedhis hand to recieve the map. |

“All yours, B,” Jimmy said. He rolled up the map he had recovered from the hotel, and then passed it into Brandon's waiting hand. “And to answer your question – only from the window seat of a 747,” he added. “Oh, and once from the press box at Wrigley Field. I take it you got yourself some roots around there?" |

"Thank you. Yeah I've got, well had most likely, relatives there. My mother's brother, Sean and his family. Uncle Sean was also a shooter. Not quite as avid as dad or mom but he was weirdly competitive with my dad so he had a small arsenal that he liked to show off whenever we would visit." Brandon said as he lay the map out on a one of the tables and began drawing an approximate route to Estes Park. Brandon noted that he was speaking about his uncle in past tense. He wasn't going to entertain the possibility that he or his aunt Tanya or any of his cousins were still alive. "It's right up in the mountains. It'll be cold as balls up there, it may be worth it to stop on the way to pick up some fresh warm clothing. This stuff is fetting kibd of rank and soiled clothing doesn't keep you as warm. Is there anything else we need?" Brandon pointed out rubbing his chin thoughtfully. |

“Water, always water,” Eli said. “I brought some more myself,” Jimmy said. “And some more food. Of course, I wasn’t expecting to feed this many people.” “Not surprisingly, our supply of painkillers is low as well,” Annie added. “Willow’s antibiotic regimen is sustainable for a while yet, but of course we could always use more in reserve. My kit is well stocked otherwise, but of course I wouldn't object to having more of essentially anything." |

"Sign me up for some new clothes." Jen was quick to agree with Brandon. Antonio, meanwhile, ran a hand through his goatee contemplatively. He had been asking God for guidance, and he was fairly sure he would stick with these people regardless of the crimes they had committed earlier. Not all of them were bad people, he knew that. He could put up with a few bad seeds if it meant delivering this cure and saving humanity. Maybe he could even deter them from killing a few people on their way if the need arose. "It might be worth picking up a few tools and spare parts as well." Antonio suggested. "Considering your luck with cars, it seems unlikely we will get across the mountains and desert with no problems." "Bouncing off what Antonio suggested, gas too." Willow added. "We picked up enough extra to help us out in a pinch, but now we are running a small convoy. We should make sure everyone's tanks are filled and maybe increase our reserves, just in case." |

"Bigger family, bigger needs. Clothes, meds, tools and gas. I can also think of a few odds and ends that could come in handy, like rope, a rod and tackle, some camping gear in case we have to rough it again. I don't like the idea too much but we could find a lot of that in one place. We should hit a Walmart." Brandon said as rolled the map up again. Places like Walmart are often the first to get hit in an event like this. They've got a wide choice of items that make them the number one target for looters. Usually its electronics they make off with, short-sighted idiots that underestimated the threat the outbreak posed, probably figured everything would be under control again and they'd have power to use all those new TVs and consoles. The more prudent looters took food and ammo. They were looking for some of the less tempting and less essential items so they'd probably have little trouble finding what they wanted. Getting to it was the problem. Walmart attracts people and people attract rotters. In the initial outbreak most business districts became buffets for rotters and those rotters loitered until something else got their attention. They could expect to find a whole bunch of them if they were hitting a Walmart. "As for the water, grab two of those empty jugs and mark them with an X. Fill them with water from the lake, the X is so we know never to drink from those jugs directly ever again. They'll be filthy with microbes. I'll show you guys how to filter water for purification and then drinking later." he concluded making his way back toward the van. He had something to do again. It made his mind a little less messy. |

“Let’s not get too carried away,” Eli jumped in again. “We’re still only going to California, not the Andes.” He looked up at the sky, as he so often did these days. It was practically night time again. Wendy and her crew – and the extreme measures they drove Eli too – had stolen most of the sun from them. “Today’s a wash,” he announced when he looked back down. “An’ we’re all tired, anyway. So rest up tonight and do whatever you gotta do to clear your heads. We’re back on the road tomorrow first light. And I mean first light. Be ready.” Be ready. That was rapidly becoming Eli’s mantra, and he didn’t think that was a bad thing. “The meantime, I’ll take care of this,” Eli said, softer, nodding to the jugs Brandon had indicated. He moved towards them, and found Jimmy had started moving right after him. “Right behind you,” the redhead volunteered. |

Nolan crossed his arms as Eli took the cans for water and departed with Jimmy in tow. Looked like they were staying for a little while longer. He was still new here though and he really didn't know these people that well. Kelsey knew them. He was just the tag-a-long at this point. But at the very least he could relax a little and try to get to know some of them. Especially Willow and Brandon. Kelsey was close to them and that meant a lot to him. "Hey Kels, what do you say you introduce me to Willow and Brandon?" "But, you already met them." She looked up at him with a little confusion. "I mean formally." He explained. "Like, sit us all down with them and maybe talk a little with them? Dad trusted you to them, I just want to get to know them a little." Kelsey pursed her lips like dad always used to do when he was thinking about something. The resemblance always had been a little uncanny. Even seeing the familiar expression stung. He had come to terms with the fact his father was dead, but to learn he had made it so close still hurt a little. "Sure." She finally said and lit up a little. "You'll really like them." "After everything you've said about them, I'm sure I will." Nolan smiled back. "But first..." He glanced over his shoulder and located Antonio through the dispersing people. "Father Mendez!" Nolan trotted over and flagged the priest down. "Can I borrow one of your razors?" |
