A quick pang of pain hit Willow in the heart as Brandon presented the memento of Glenda to her. She had been trying not to talk or think about Glenda for the past few days because it still hurt not to have her around. The more recent deaths of Julie and Randall had helped her not focus on it so much. But seeing her knife again, like a physical reminder of her, choked Willow up a little. The gesture was also really corny, but really sweet. She liked that about Brandon though. She gingerly took the knife from and held it. It was freaking huge; about a foot long with a really broad blade. Glenda had been able to make it seem like an extension of her arm when she swung it, Willow hadn't really noticed how big the knife had been at the time though. It posthumously made Glenda even more amazing. She really was someone that could survive in this world; she was robbed of that chance by some coward with a gun. She accepted the knife and the sheath and clipped them onto the waist of her jeans, opposite her FNP. "Thanks." Willow gave Brandon a melancholy smile. "That was really sweet. I'll feel better with her looking after me." Willow leaned forward and planted her lips against Brandon's. She had intended for it to be a quick peck, but she ended up lingering there for several seconds before pulling away. "I've been using Julie's kukri to practice my swings and stuff during my free time." She admitted to Brandon afterward. "I even killed a rotter at Highland, so I'm feeling a little better with it. But it's hard to feel fully confident after hearing about Julie. Do you think you could give me some extra pointers sometime?" * * * * * "So..." This was the first time Nolan had been alone with his sister since they found him hiding in that rundown old house. "I know we never really talked much... and I wasn't always the best big brother... but I'm really glad you're okay." He didn't really know what else to say. He was glad to see her, but he still didn't really know what to say to her. From the moment Kelsey was born, she and Nolan had lived two different lives under the same roof. They were siblings, yes, and that made them close, but he almost felt like they came from two different generations because of the age gap. "Everybody thought you were dead." Kelsey bluntly admitted right off the bat. "I kinda did, too. I'm sorry." "Nothing to worry about... I would have thought the same. Hell... I thought mom and dad had died a long time ago. I had no idea that dad made it as long as he did..." Shit... I should change the subject. "So, I'm sorry for asking, but it really does need to be asked... are you sure you wanna leave everyone behind and go back to Flint?" She had been with these people for several weeks now. In fact, she had been friends with Willow in particular for almost two months. Eli had even said before something about our family. These people really did see themselves as a family. It may have been dangerous out here, but they always had each other. Even when Kelsey's parents died, they still looked out for her. Was the safety worth the separation? Nolan didn't have an answer. He felt like it wasn't even his place to make that decision for her. "I don't want anybody to die for me anymore..." She mumbled. That... was not really an answer. |

"I'm holding knife practice everyday. Sometimes twice a day if there's time." Brandon informed her. He knew the gesture may bring up raw feelings but he was glad Willow still seemed to appreciate it. She kissed him and it was all the thanks he could have hoped for. He'd been reckless and impulsive, he'd get drunk every weekend and sleep around with more women than he cared to count, he'd only ever known surrender to his vices. To have willingly surrendered to another person was new and exciting, but also terrifying. Willow scared him. Kelsey scared him. Or at least she had, he had to remind himself that Nolan was there now and Kelsey wasn't their responsibility anymore. At least not their's primarily. Though he was overwhelmingly happy they found Nolan, a tiny part of him felt incredibly envious. As daunting as the responsibility was, he enjoyed the idea. "We've got a lot of time right now actually." he pointed out as he slid his hands around her waist. |

Eli appeared outside. The air was cold but refreshing – much more than it was this morning. Eli suspected that had more to do with him than the environment, however. He put his fingers to his mouth and whistled loudly to attract everyone’s attention. Looking around, he spotted Willow and Brandon talking by themselves, Emily not too far off, and Jen and Antonio were working on his truck. Antonio was supervising. At first glance, it looked like he knew what he was doing. That made Eli think. “So!” he said, addressing the whole courtyard. “I promised Nolan we’d get him a ride. Looks like he’s going to take Kelsey and head back to Flint. Who’s going with me?” |

"Right here." Emily volunteered immediately, getting to her feet. Brandon was quiet. He stood staring off at nothing in particular with his moth slightly agape. The news was... not surprising as such, but still impactful. They'd be continuing on without Kelsey. It was upsetting. It was of course exactly what he hoped for, for Kelsey to be safely behind those walls, it was just that until then every time he imagined it he couldn't help but imagine himself being there too to look out for her. He couldn't go back to Flint though, not after promising to see this through. In an ideal world Willow would go too, she could easily look out for Kelsey and would be an incredible boon to that community, and both the people he cared most about would be safe. He'd suggest she go with them if he thought for a second he could convince her to. Kelsey was leaving them. He wanted it that way, but he still wasn't happy about it. The other option was she came with them which would be worse but feel better. "When are they leaving?" Brandon asked softly. |

Eli looked to Brandon, surprised by the sadness in his voice. It only took him a moment to realize he shouldn’t be, though. Brandon and Kelsey were close. He was like a big brother to her. One of Randall’s last words was an instruction to him and Willow to watch out for her. Kelsey leaving with Nolan was the right thing. Eli was sure of that beyond a doubt. Still, he felt foolish for not thinking about Brandon and Willow in all this. “We didn’t get into it,” Eli said, frowning sympathetically. “I assume later today, as soon as we get them set up.” |

Jen originally didn't know much about the inner workings of cars, but Antonio was an unsurprisingly good teacher. He had walked her through the testing of various fluid levels, including what they did and how they affected the car, he showed her some of the belts, gave her a quick tour of the engine block, battery basics, and the electrical systems that it affected. There was a hell of a lot more involved in the functioning of a car than just making the engine run; she wasn't sure she would be able to remember all of this. Antonio was quite knowledgeable about cars though. If he came along with them, those skills would be great to have. "I would be glad to help." Antonio offered his services to Eli. Jen was a little more caught up on the part where Nolan and Kelsey were leaving. It left Jen feeling... conflicted. She barely knew Kelsey and didn't know Nolan at all, but she still felt like she owed Randall for what he did. She knew that it was silly, but it was admittedly part of the reason she had been so eager to help out Kelsey. Helping her learn to shoot so that she could help better. Offering to talk to her last night when she was feeling down. She kind of wanted to help see them both to Flint, but at the same time, the cure was so much more important. And she had started to make some really good friends here too. She was starting to feel like part of the group. Jen peeled herself out from under the hood and glanced at Willow. She stood near Brandon and Eli, looking equally conflicted on the subject. Jen may have wanted to be closer to Kelsey, but Willow and Brandon actually were. They were kind of like her big siblings. They had every reason she had to be conflicted on it, and then some. It was for the best though. It may not have felt good, but Jen knew that it was the right choice for them to make. Nolan needed to recover some strength and Kelsey... she was just a child. She had lost enough already. There was no reason for her to continue. |

“Thanks, padre,” Eli nodded to Antonio. “Meet you in the truck.” He had to admit – the priest had come through for them. Everything he had told them had been true, and he had been essential to finding Nolan. Even Eli was finding it hard not to lower his guard a little, maybe even trust him. He glanced over to Emily next, giving her a nod in Antonio’s direction – a non-verbal cue that she should join him, if she was coming. He hadn’t warmed up as much to her, but he could recognize that his indifference wasn’t rational. Maybe it was just the uniform that was keeping him at a remove. Before joining them in the truck, Eli took a few steps towards Brandon and Willow. He noticed Annie appear in the parking lot, as well. He waved her over. He could use her input as well. “You guys can sit this one out,” Eli said, glancing between Brandon and Willow. “Shouldn’t take long, and I’d feel better knowing you had things under control here anyhow.” Annie arrived about then. She raised an eyebrow as she got close. “What’s going on?” “An’ I wanted to talk to you guys,” Eli answered, looking to Annie briefly. “It’s gettin’ to be that time where we can’t avoid the subject any longer. Once Nolan and Kelsey go their own way, Emily and Antonio are gonna wanna know what’s next for us. An’ I don’t know if we should bother with the lie. The padre, at least, has proven to be on the straight. An’ Emily, well I know she’s a friend of yours, Brandon.” He paused, looking to each face to gauge their feelings on the subject. His own were quite conflicted, and they could probably tell. “I still don’t like it, not after…” He didn’t finish the sentence. He knew he didn’t need to. “But what do you think?” |

Emily nodded to Eli and followed Antonio. She was still undecided about what she was doing. The group needed to be smaller in her opinion, that many people only increased the chance of something going terribly wrong. Nolan and Kelsey would benefit from having somebody properly armed and trained with them on the way back to Flint in the event they ran into trouble. At the same time though, how could she walk away from the cure and her only friend? "Emily's one of the good ones. I know you guys don't know her, but if you knew her like I do you wouldn't have any reason to doubt. Telling her is no risk to the cure, and Antonio is about the exact opposite of Max. He's done all of this without even a thought toward himself. We really should tell them." Brandon said confidently. |

"Since we ran into them, I've talked to Emily and Antonio a couple of times. Trying to get a feel for them, you know?" Willow explained casually. She was still really conflicted on Nolan and Kelsey leaving, but the decision had been made. And she knew that it was for the best. At the end of the day, Kelsey would be safe. With Marcus in charge, she had no doubt that the city would only get better. Stronger. Safer. But she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on the discussion in front of her now. "I didn't get any bad vibes from either of them. Antonio's been not only earnest and forthright with us, but he seems pretty knowledgeable in a lot of areas. Emily, on the other hand, might be a little green behind the ears, but I think her heart is in the right place." |

“I agree,” Annie added her thoughts to the mix. “I think it’s safe to reveal what we're fighting for. And I think they deserve to know.” Eli considered that, as well as what Brandon and Willow had to say. He exhaled. “Okay,” he conceded. “I guess there’s no way around it. I’ll have to tell them." |

Willow glanced over her shoulder -- Emily, alongside the oil-stained Antonio and Jen, were almost to their little group meeting. "Before you do that." Willow interjected without thinking. Fuck, too late to back out now. I am going to regret this, aren't I? "I, uhh... Emily... might already know." She admitted nervously while shrinking away from the others a bit. "I was tired, we were talking, and I kind of accidentally mentioned the cure offhandedly." |

Eli was already on his way when Willow interrupted. He had to turn back to listen to her, and when she was done talking, he felt a spike of anger course through his body. He gave her a scorching look. “That’s fucked up,” he said acidly, his voice low. “We agreed. We fuckin’ agreed!” |

"I know! I know!" Willow had been expecting a bad reaction. She was kind of hoping that everyone agreeing to fill the two newbies in on the cure would alleviate some of the anger. But that hope was clearly nothing more than just that. Already intimidated and regretting the fact she came clean, she took a step backward and held her hands forward like she was trying to calm him down. She was intimidated, but she wasn't going to curl into a ball and give up. The least she could do was properly explain herself. "I was right there with you, I agreed too! And I fucked up! I swear to God, I had no intention of telling her! It was a complete accident!" |

Eli took a breath before responding. His frown and narrowed eyes persisted, but the jolt of anger inside him began to taper off. Willow knew she was wrong. She admitted it. He couldn’t rightly go after her for it, no matter how annoyed – or angry – it made him. “We gotta trust each other,” he said, his irritation obvious. “Even when we’re tired.” He decided to leave it at that. His mood had been lifted just a few minutes ago. He didn’t want to let it dip much further. He started to turn around – but then he changed his mind and stopped. “And no more accidents,” he sniped. After that, Eli walked away. |

"I can't believe you screwed it up that badly, Wilma. That's fine, mom will fix it. Just... go play with your games or something." "I don't want Wilma on my team. She sucks at sports." "You used to be such a better student than this... what happened, Willow? I had high expectations for you coming into this class. This is not the kind of work I expected out of you." "Dammit, Wilma. We're expecting you to inherit our business and our fortune one day. And you want to get degrees in ENGLISH and FINE ARTS!? That is a waste of our time and our money! And we will not pay for a wasted education, young lady! Come talk to us again when you want to get a degree that's actually worth something -- until then, good luck paying your own way through college with no job." "Another failed interview, huh? Maybe you should stop playing those games and learn how to socialize with the rest of the world. You need to have confidence and backbone if you want to succeed out there. Otherwise, all you are in for is a long line of failures and a life of mediocrity." Willow cringed visibly as Eli stomped away. She had been trying hard to prove her worth. She thought she was making progress, but all she had been doing was making mistakes. Leaving the map behind and spilling the beans to Emily, in the past 24 hours she had made two major fuck ups. She could feel the disappointment radiating from Eli and it brought back flashbacks of her childhood. It had always been the same -- despite her best efforts, she always fell short. She was always a disappointment. To everyone. Her friends, her teachers, her parents. She thought things were different now, but they weren't quite as different as she had hoped they were. "I... I need to use the bathroom." Willow quickly excused herself from Brandon and Annie. She made her way away from the church, towards one of the nearby houses. She needed some time alone right now. She was on the precipice of another anxiety attack and she needed some space to sort herself out. * * * * * Jen furled her brown in concern as Eli and Willow both quickly departed after a brief altercation with one another. "What was that about?" She asked the now within earshot Brandon and Annie. At the same time, Antonio wordlessly departed from Jen and Emily and followed after Eli. |
