"Cool." Willow looked at the rear view mirror and nodded so he could see. Randall had been open about the cure. Maybe it was because he thought people would be more willing to help if there was a way to end all of this. But they had learned that there were other people willing to commit themselves to keeping the world as it was. It was best not to talk about it until they knew more about this person they were rescuing. |

“Fair enough,” Annie agreed. Eli looked over to Emmett, who gave him a slight nod. The assent on this subject, at least, made Eli feel a bit better. He sped up a little and approached the divider. |

Was this a bandit trick? The minivan drove forward towards her. So far she saw three men, one young guy with blonde hair and two more in the front, both kind of rough looking. She had enough ammo left in her M&P .40 to take all three. She could see other figures in the back but couldn't make them out. It didn't make sense to her though if they were bandits, they could have shot her, lead those things away and doubled back to loot the truck. Unless what they were after was a woman. Still that seemed like a little too much trouble to go to for a piece of ass. Emily weighed her options up. Accept whatever help they had to offer and risk what? Rape? Murder? She'd kill them or off herself before she let that happen. If she didn't accept their help she was definitely dead. She'd freeze in the night or be torn apart by creeps as she tried to make a break for it. Whatever they had in mind, she had to go with it. She wasn't completely clear on what that blonde guy was trying to tell her but she at least gleaned it involved jumping. The minivan gained speed as it made the final approach, coming to a screeching halt alongside the divider, running over one of the creeps that had tumbled over it after becoming aware of the other vehicle. Emily readied herself, physically and mentally. As she leapt from the truck her heart leapt into her throat. in the split second she hung in the air between the two vehicles there was an overwhelming fear she wouldn't make even that modest distance. It was unfounded though. She cleared the distance and awkwardly landed on the roof of the van. She lay herself flat and held on with all the strength her body had. "GO!" she shouted. |

When he got the order, Eli pressed down on the gas. He hoped this lady – whoever she was – had a good grip. Now that they had committed to saving her, he wanted to make sure they followed through successfully. The van quickly zoomed away down the bridge. As he drove, Eli constantly glanced up at the rear view mirror, making sure he didn’t see a body come tumbling down over the back window. |

Willow was relieved when she heard the person make it onto the roof of the van. As they started rolling down the bridge again, Willow hoped their newcomer would be able to hang on to the top of the van long enough to make it to the end of the bridge up ahead. Although she couldn't see well around the seats, it did not look like there were rotters up ahead. Willow unconsciously gripped her FNP a little tighter; she was hoping she wouldn't have to use it. |

Brandon's relief at the sound of the woman successfully making it to them was brief. Ahead of them was still unknown. All past experience told them bridges were dangerous. He didn't feel there was anything to fear from this woman but that didn't mean they could relax. Even if she were innocent there might still be trouble on the other side of the bridge. Eli wasn't stopping until they cleared it, and he was glad about that. ... Up top Emily couldn't help but laugh at being rescued from her dire situation. There were still unknowns. She didn't know these people, they could still be marauders but somehow she doubted it. If they were they'd regret it, she wouldn't go down without taking at least one of them with her. For the moment she was relatively safe. As safe as anyone hanging onto the roof of a movie van could be. As they finally passed the bridge the van slowed down and slowly came to a halt by the side of the road. Emily tensed up as she considered her situation. She drew her M&P .40 and rolled off the roof, landing with her pistol lowered. ... Brandon now had a good look at her. She was a brunette, in her twenties, the uniform had an effect of making her age harder to guess within that range. She had a rounded jaw and chin. Kind of big ears. Her hair seemed to be about long enough to come down to her neck and she kept it tied back. She wasn't an imposing figure but she had a stern look and an assessing gaze as she took note of all the van's occupants. ... Emily could see women. They were armed, meaning they weren't being held against their will. They also had two children with them, a boy and a girl. They positioned themselves protectively around them but the kids wanted to get a look too. The image they presented was significantly less menacing than the two in the front potentially presented. That didn't mean they were completely benign though, they could still be trouble. She judged that was fairly unlikely though, so as a sign of goodwill she holstered her piece. She did keep it unbuckled though, and rested her hand on her belt in easy reach of it. |

Once he had put the van in park, Eli assessed the woman they had just rescued. The uniform implied some training and competence, but otherwise she didn’t look like much – then again, neither had Maxwell. Eli decided not to let his guard down. He subtly drew his pistol before opening the door and stepping out. He kept it behind the car door and out of sight until both his feet were on the ground and he was facing her down. He noticed the location of her hand before he noticed anything else. “First – you draw, and you get put down,” he said, breaking the ice – shattering it, really, as if with a sledgehammer. “Second – who are you?” |

If there was a single gun raised at her she'd draw and take her chances. It seemed all she ever heard about those days roving gangs. Like all the good people were dead. Law and order weren't coming back any time soon it seemed. "Emily. I'm with... I was with Iowa State Patrol. Should I say thanks for the rescue back there, or would that be speaking too soon?" she said in a steady voice. ... Brandon watched the exchange warily. There was something about her that was bothering him. He couldn't put his finger on it. When she told Eli her name Brandon's mind leapt to an impossible conclusion. It seemed completely preposterous, but now that he looked at her again he pictured her with more hair, in a little dress with skinned knees and missing baby teeth, and about 8 years old. It was her. Emily! "Emily? Emily Mableson?" he spoke up. She cocked her head at that then peered into the van curiously, her eyes frequently darting to the side to keep watch on Eli. "Yeah?" she answered uncertainly. "Hold on! Jen, can you please open the door?" Brandon asked as he slipped past Jen to exit the van. She visibly tensed up at the commotion, but fortunately kept calm and possibly curious enough not to draw. She clearly didn't recognise him either. "It's Brandon. Brandon Keanan, from Patterson." he explained, presenting himself with an uncertain look on his face. "Oh my god. Brandon!" she laughed, realisation all over her face. They hadn't seen each other in years but they hugged each other like they were family. Most people still around had lost lost pretty much everyone they had known before the outbreak in the last month. To find a familiar face out there was huge. To find somebody they knew after so many years was even bigger. |

"Who is Emily?" Jen turned to Willow. Willow almost didn't hear her. Emily. She knew that name and there was no doubt in her mind that it was that Emily. The Emily that was Brandon's old flame. She should be happy that one of Brandon's old friends was alive. But why did it have to be that friend? Of all the friends it could have been, it had to be her. The one woman that could pry Brandon away from her. Of course, Brandon would never do anything like that to her, right? She'd only known him for a couple of weeks. And with minimal female competition around. Fuck... Willow could already feel herself starting to worry. For a second, she wished she had just voted to leave this woman behind, but quickly reprimanded herself for even having such a stupid and selfish thought. There was no guarantee that anything would happen. She just... had to try and be happy and hope that nothing happened. "Ah... long story..." Willow finally answered Jen with an uneasy laugh. Jen looked at Willow strangely, but thankfully decided not to press the issue. |

Brandon’s sudden excitement – and then he and Emily’s sudden embrace – made Eli raise an eyebrow. The display wasn’t enough to bring Eli’s guard down all the way, but it did put a dent in it. “So… not strangers, then,” he interrupted. “Brandon? Wanna fill us in here?” |

"No, not strangers. Emily's an old friend of mine, from when we were kids. I'm so sorry I didn't recognize you at first." Brandon confirmed and then immediately turned his attention back to Emily. They stood at arms length regarding each other with mutual amazement. Brandon considered the uniform. He completely believed her when she said she was a trooper. Of course she became a cop. "Me? Jesus, look at you. You filled out, you used to be so scrawny." she noted, looking him up and down. The sterness was completely gone and she stood with an ease that made told the truth that while she might have been a cop she was still just a young woman. A young woman on her own relieved to have found a friendly face. Faces, perhaps. She turned back toward Eli and she was a cop again. "Thank you for the assist back there. It was looking grim." she said with a sincere tone before extending a hand toward him. |

Who am I kidding? Every day we risk the chance of dying to something or the other; the last thing I should be worried about is another woman. Willow inhaled and exhaled slowly as she internally talked herself out of her small panic attack. Her stupid panic attack. There were much bigger things to worry about these days. She should just be happy that Brandon found one of his old friends on the road. She should introduce herself though. Just to be safe. After all, one could never be too safe these days, right? She slipped her FNP into its holster. "Excuse me." Willow gently maneuvered her way out of the back seat around Jen. As Willow stepped out of the car, she put too much weight on her bad leg. Her thigh turned hot with pain and then went numb. Without being able to even feel her leg, she started falling toward the ground. Jen must have seen it coming though; she caught Willow's arm before she fell and pulled her back upright. "Jesus, Willow! Do you know how to take it easy?" Jen lectured her. "My bad, my bad. You're right." Willow assured her. "Thanks for the save." Jen sighed and slumped back into her seat. "Just... don't do it again." Normally her leg was usable as long as she didn't put much weight on it. If she was careful, she could limp fairly indefinitely, just as she had when they walked to Argonne National Lab and back. When she stepped from the van, she had forgotten that and put all her weight on her bad leg. Willow made a mental note of that as she leaned against the side of the van. From out here she could see her more clearly. So this was Emily Mableson. She wasn't planning on interrupted their talk just yet, but that little commotion probably had done exactly that. |

Eli considered Emily for another long moment, before finally holstering his pistol while it was still out of sight. Finally, he emerged from behind the car door and accepted her handshake. “Eli,” he introduced himself. “An’ you’re welcome.” It felt a little wrong accepting the thanks, considering he was against the rescue. Then again, he had been behind the wheel, and he didn’t exactly fight it either. That was enough to keep him from feeling like a fraud. He glanced over at Willow, frowning a little when he saw that she had almost fell. She was so active and wilful, it was easy to forget just how banged up she had gotten a few days ago. |

Emily raised an eyebrow and gave a wry smile at Willow as she staggered out of the van. "Whoah, you okay? Oh um, Emily this is Willow. Dude with the beard is Emmett. In the middle is Jen, Connor and Annie and in the back is Kelsey." Brandon explained, gesturing to each person as he did. There had only been one other day that compared to this one, and that was the day his family died. The only thing that had saved it from the dubious honor of being the wirst day of his life was that he wasn't alone like before. Now to find Emily? It was a miracle. She was alive. She was there. Not everything from before was lost, and it felt good. Kelsey deserved to have this. They really had to find Nolan. "Everybody seems to be heading north, or to the coast, not many people headed inland. What brings you to Iowa?" Emily asked as she buckled her holster. |

“Lookin’ for someone,” Eli jumped in with his answer. “Kelsey’s brother. He went to school in Iowa City.” It was the truth, but it wasn’t the whole truth. For now, Eli figured what he said in the car still applied. Emily was Brandon’s friend and he seemed to vouch for her, and that meant a lot – but still. From the sound of it, they hadn’t seen each other since they were kids. A lot could happen in that kind of time. People could change. The fact that she was a cop, in his eyes, hurt more than it helped. He’d run across his fair share of police. A few of them were decent people behind the badge. More were assholes and bullies with complexes. “An’ what brought you to your resting spot back there?” he asked, nodding towards the bridge. |
