It was another woman. She hadn't noticed her as they pulled up. Somehow the fact they had a woman with them helped put her at ease a little.

"I'll keep the gun, thanks. Why would you need three cars full of people to pick over one empty house?" she asked.

First there were two guys out the front, and then moments later three cars pulled up out front. The only other survivor she'd met in weeks wasn't friendly, to say she was a little rattled by this turn of events was an understatement.

"That guy is he...?" she asked quickly fully considering what she just did.

Dude, wake up! We've got a world to save.
Eli bolted to the scene from Brandon's brother's room, wearing a dark blue peacoat only half-buttoned up. His eyes were alight and his Supergrade was drawn. He was close enough to hear an unrecognizable voice belt out a threat, which instantly got his figurative hackles up. Seeing Brandon on the ground -- and the gun in the stranger's hands -- did nothing to calm him.

He took quick stock of the situation before coming to a stop near Willow, and aiming his gun at the hatch, much like she was.

"Gun down, you crazy puta!" he interrupted. "Now!"

"Jesus, Eli, calm the fuck down!" Randall verbally intervened, but didn't lay a hand on Eli. "That woman is terrified, and she has every right to be! People aren't the same anymore, you know that."

Randall didn't know if Brandon was okay or not, but he didn't see blood so he doubted that he had been shot. The last thing Randall needed now was Eli going off the hook. He doubted that he would shoot her, but if Eli freaking her out further, she was more likely to start shooting. They would undoubtedly win, but if he could end this with nobody getting shot, he would walk away happy.

"He's fine." Glenda told the woman upstairs, but was now saying it just as much to the frenzied Eli. "Just dazed from the fall. You had best be glad your shot missed."

She backed away further into attic as the Puerto Rican guy yelled at her. She could hear them talking amongst themselves. The woman told her that the guy she shot at was fine, which was a relief. They really did seem okay, but then so had he . After a moment of thought she decided her best shot was to take a chance on them.

"Okay. I'm coming down." she conceded quietly.

She climbed down the stairs as Brandon got to his feet. He leaned against the wall and focused on breathing. The girl handed the rifle over to Glenda with a little reluctance.

Eli didn't react to Randall's admonishment. Instead, he glanced back and forth between Brandon, who was now thankfully on his feet, and this new chick. When she surrendered her rifle, he let himself a relax little. He didn't holster his pistol, but he did lower it so it was pointing at the ground.

"You okay, bud?" he asked Brandon, though he glared at the new girl warily.

"See?" Randall exclaimed as the woman handed her rifle over. "She is cool. All just a misunderstanding. Now can we please put our guns down?"

Willow slowly lowered her rifle in compliance to Randall's request and let out a long sigh of relief that this little episode was over.

"Best case scenario, I'd say." She chimed. "Now, if you will excuse me, I am going outside for a smoke."

Glenda gave Willow a hard stare that was not reciprocated and not even noticed. She brushed off the mild annoyance and turned her attention to the new woman in their midst. Since Glenda had taken the initiative of reaching out to her fellow woman, she extended her free hand to her.

"My name is Glenda, by the way."

Brandon gave Eli an appreciative nod.

"Yeah... I'm okay." he said rubbing the back of his head.

The girl shook Glenda's hand tentatively.

"I'm Julie. I'm sorry I nearly shot your fr... I'm sorry I nearly shot you in the face." she apologised at first to Glenda and then directly to Brandon.

"That's okay, I guess?" Brandon responded unsure of how to react.

Okay, Eli realized as the blast of adrenaline settled. She's not a threat. Brandon's okay. Everything's cool.

He went ahead and holstered his pistol, then took a breath. He straightened himself out and undid the few buttons on the peacoat he was trying on.

"You gotta be more careful, Julie," he said measuredly. "The lady's right, you should be damn glad your shot missed. Now I feel like I can probably make an educated guess, but why don't you go ahead and tell us what you were doing here."

"I've been staying here for a couple of days. The place was totally screwed so I figured it'd be a good place to hide from the Deadites and from people since it isn't exactly welcoming. I figured nobody was using it anymore since... you know." she explained.

Julie realised why they were there when she finally got a better look at everyone, recognising Brandon.

"You're the guy from the photos. This is your house. That's why you're here." Julie explained to herself, a kind of embarrassment and relief washing over her as the situation began to make sense.

"Deadites, huh? That's a new one," Eli said, then heard some more footsteps coming up behind them.

He turned around to see Mac lumbering up to them, wielding the Browning he had claimed from Brandon's stash. Eli held out a hand, motioning for him to stop.

"It's okay," he said. "We're good here."

The big guy lowered his gun, much like Eli had a moment ago. "Who's she?" she asked, nodding past him at the Asian girl.

"Julie," Eli answered simply. "We're still figuring the rest out. You better get back to it, though. We should probably get out of here before there are any more surprises. We'll fill you in later."

Mac nodded back slowly, not eager to comply but understanding. "I'll tell the others," he said, and marched back the way he came.

Eli turned back to the small gathering. "So where were we?"

Randall decided it was about time a decision was made. He stepped forward.

"My name is Randall. I am the... unofficial leader of this group." The middle-aged contractor sized her up with his light blue eyes.

He saw nervousness in her eyes, but he doubted that she was a threat after seeing her up close. She was probably just a scared survivor who'd had an encounter with some bad people. It was, unfortunately, something Randall expected to happen sooner rather than later. This put him in an awkward position though; this woman had nearly blown Brandon's brains out and now he had to decide what the best course of action was. Glenda seemed to have taken a liking to her, much in the same way she looked out for Willow early on.

"We are here gathering supplies for a small community nearby before most of us head west to Chicago." Randall did not bother to wait for her to introduce herself; he doubted there was more she could say that she hadn't already so he wanted to get straight to the point. "There aren't many of us left over there, but it is probably safer than staying here on your own. Especially after we get these supplies over there."

He worried that this softness would get him killed one day. But he wanted to believe that he was better than some thug who would take advantage of the chaos to hurt others. Elaine would never forgive him if he did something like that.

"The choice is yours though, we won't force you to go anywhere. If you want to leave, you are free to leave."

"I was planning on gathering what I could and making my way north, as far away from New York as possible. I heard the whole city was overrun with those things. A handful of people against a few million is pretty shitty odds so I appreciate the offer but I'm gonna keep moving. My boyfriend and I were heading for Canada, we figured a lower population density area was a safe bet, and maybe they don't like the cold. We'd be halfway there by now but we had... setbacks, and Kevin didn't make it." Julie explained.

Before anyone could say anything else though Julie spoke again.

"Hey wait a second. If you've got somewhere safe why the hell are you going to Chicago? Is it safe there? Is the army there?" she asked with mounting hope.

Eli frowned sympathetically at the mention of a dead boyfriend and the desire to journey north, but then frowned deeper when she got a little optimistic. That glimmer of hope she wanted just didn't exist. He hated having to be the one to tell her that.

"No," he said, shaking his head. "We don't know if it's any safer. And you shouldn't count on the army being anywhere."

He hung his head a little and looked to Randall. This was exactly the kind of scenario he didn't want to be responsible for dealing with. It was one of the many reasons he had so eagerly handed over the cure in the first place. He was going to let him decide how much news to break.

Randall frowned. Did he want to tell her the truth about their mission and risk getting her hopes up? Maybe she would even help. False hope was not one thing that Randall was in the mood for right now; even he wasn't entirely sure if this cure was anything BUT false hope. But he was a fairly poor liar, so maybe the truth was best. He scratched his head and shifted uncomfortably. He then reached into his jacket and pulled out the same black canister.

"We found this on a dead soldier in town..." His hesitation in revealing the information was obvious. "It had a note on it saying it was a cure and it had to be taken to Chicago. None of us really know if this is some hoax or a false hope... but we lost a lot of guys a few days ago. So I guess we're willing to try anything right now."

Randall paused, taking a moment to tuck the 'cure' back into his jacket. He didn't want to make it sound like the cure was the only thing they had.

"And even if it does end up being a hoax... well, I think I've seen enough of New York like this. I have a son, Nolan, who was going to college at the University of Iowa, but we lost contact after the cell phones died out. Even if this is all for nothing, then maybe I can find my son too." Randall bowed his head as his lips curled into a somber smile. He lifted a hand to silence any potential retorts. "Don't worry, I know they are both long shots. But... that is why I am going to Chicago. We are all betting on the long shot."

Randall shifted his weight again and crossed his arms.

"You know, I hadn't planned on being so earnest." He admitted after a moment of thought. "But I suppose it's out there now."

Julie was about to inform him he was crazy until he mentioned his son. She had to admit it made about as much sense as blindly marching north. It wasn't as if she even knew how she was going to survive up there, she'd never been hunting and she knew nothing about farming. The chances of her finding a community up north were slim, that was kind of the whole point of going there in the first place; no people, no Deadites. She sure as hell didn't like the idea of being stuck in one spot though, somehow moving around seemed safer.

This cure was bullshit, it had to be bullshit. If it wasn't though, and she didn't even try to help, that would make her a really shitty person. She hadn't even made a choice yet and she could already feel guilty, although that could just be because she nearly killed a guy. She wasn't in a good place emotionally.

"I don't know if this is weird, but can I come with you? I just want to be clear though, I think this cure is total BS. But you're the first people I've come across that aren't assholes, and I think staying on the move even if it's towards Deadite central is better than staying put." she put the proppsition forward awkwardly.
