If the Eli / Julie and Brandon / Willow scenes have reached their endpoints, sorry about that. I think we can get this Randall / Annie scene done in just a couple more posts, then we can jump

Now it is time for my fun facts about the Flint Arc!

-- The Flint Arc was originally planned to be much shorter than it ended up being. Yerishi proposed the ideas of Annie and Jimmy as characters and wanted to add some time in the community to develop them, which ended up changing the arc from a predicted 13 pages to 20 pages! Since the group looked like hell and could use a prolonged rest, I agreed. I added in Willow's injury in Strompy's previous arc to give everyone a reason to stick around for a while. It ended up being over 26 pages at the end of the day; more than double what I had originally planned! Several of the subplots (Annie and Ethan + Jimmy and the scavenging team) I worked a lot on with Yerishi. Him helping with a lot of that preserved my sanity, which was starting to run thin by the end of the arc due to managing so many characters.

-- The attack on Flint was originally planned to be a lot longer. After Garret's team was taken out, Jason's team was supposed to attack the front and lead to a 'phase two' of the attack. Then after that, rotters would start pouring into the city. While rotters were in the city, Cory would serve as the final boss, playing a game of predator in the city with the survivors, stalking them and picking off who he could. This was changed for a couple of reasons. I realized that the border crew's numbers were too low to allow them to continue a long-endured siege like that, especially with rotters on their tails at the same time. Furthermore, those long posts were starting to really drive me up a wall, so the phase two part was phased out in favor of Marcus just blowing them all up. Cory could not go predator style, because I could not think of a reason why he would actually stick around and keep fighting; he isn't a dumbass like Garret. Since Cory disliked traitors and likes fucking with people, I figured it would be more fitting for him to cripple Maxwell and leave the evidence of his betrayal behind so everyone could decide what to do with him. It also had the added benefit of putting more spotlight on Maxwell and his betrayal rather than Cory being a badass. On top of that, going with the extended cut would have left Flint in TERRIBLE shape; I wanted the community of Flint to take a hit, but have enough manpower and resources left to stage a recovery and still be a safe haven. I wanted there to be a silver lining to the story rather than just a total party kill. Unfortunately, my previous plans for everyone had originally intended for a total kill of Flint, so the plans all had to change...

-- Ajay was originally a character Yerishi had me play to serve as an assistant to Annie. All I had to work with was 'brown-skinned young guy named Ajay'. I made him as someone who is smart and capable, but not always sure of himself and his qualifications. He gets flustered rather easily as well. He isn't much one for combat and would rather help people than hurt people in almost any situation. He grew on me and I ended up making him a minor character, surprising even Yerishi with the screen time he got.

-- Candice was someone I didn't have any plans for going in. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do with her and I decided I would figure it out as I went. When the clinic only had two a crew of two, I figured that a place like that would have more staff on standby, so I decided to make Candice one of the nurses that helped out there. She was someone who was quiet, but kindhearted. She was overwhelmed by what had happened in the world, but wanted to do everything in her power to help. I liked her, but in hindsight I don't think I dedicated enough time to her character. I never even had much interaction between her and her boyfriend, Marcus, which is kind of odd in hindsight.

-- Marcus was the original character I was going to promote at the end of the arc. He was created with the intention of being the guy that joined the crew. I wanted him to be a little more self-conscious and skittish than the more level-headed Randall to provide a contrast, but similar enough despite their different backgrounds that they would have a lot of common ground. He would survive the assault on Flint, but suffer so many losses that he wanted to go with Randall to escape from the memories the city held for him (a direct recall to Randall leaving Mount Kisco). The following arcs would show him get a lot of character development where Randall helped him come to terms with his losses at Flint and he would become stronger from it. As a result, he and Randall would reach bro-status levels of friendship.

-- Geraldine was always planned to be Marcus' little half-sister. Her status as a city-level politician let me freely make her sympathetic despite being a politician (and politicians are people I have a hard time liking). I was allowed to make her determined and confident while at the same time allowing her to be humanitarian and flexible. I wanted her to see the world for what it was, but be determined to make it better and not conform to it, which spoke of her status as a fledgling politician while making her a parallel to Randall.

-- So why Jen for joining the team? Good question; Jen was a one shot character that I had no plans for during her first appearance. The man I had originally planned to join the team at the end was, in fact, Marcus. As time went on, I grew attached to Ajay, Candice, and Geraldine as well. I liked them as characters and would be fine seeing any of them get promoted (they each brought something different to the group). Around halfway through the arc, I was unsure of who I wanted to promote anymore, so I used a random number generator to decide for me. The two that it selected would be put into a situation during the final assault, a choice would arise that would force the team to make a choice. They would have to save one and leave the other to die. This was nice because I could pick two character and then throw the decision of promotion into YOUR hands. The RNG gave me Marcus and Ajay as the two choices and I was ready to go. But I couldn't think of a way to incorporate that choice in the end. Which worked out fine. Ajay needed to live to give Annie a clear conscience in leaving; and I liked the idea of Marcus taking over as head of the community in the stead of his deceased sister, Geraldine. He was really the most logical character for it, being the brother of the woman that had led them so far. It was like a passing of the torch. That saved both of these character's lives. The problem was that left me with no characters to promote to the main crew (by this point, I had already killed off Geraldine, Candice, and Spencer). BUT WAIT! During the rotter attack on the second day, I had reintroduced Jen as a plot device; her getting shot forced Randall and Annie to leave the safety of the gates and save her life. I had planned on her meeting a grisly end during the final battle, but she was the only other established character I had left to join the team. So I cut out her death and had her join the team in Marcus' stead. (Fun fact: originally, Cory was going to shoot the gas truck in the scrapyard and the explosion was going to completely liquefy her).

Also, the reins are now officially in Yerishi's hands. And I am looking so very forward to being out of the driver's seat.

My previous arc was considerably shorter than that one. That was some quality stuff. I liked the brevity of Flint fight. It was energetic and shocking and the aftermath has been so... still. I had nowhere near that same amount of planning to bend and tweak with my arc. I kind of made a bunch of it up on the fly. Didn't even know what I was going to do until thd day before I took over where I was tosding up some kind of encounter with military deserters or a fuck huge swarm of rotters until I just threw a dart at a wall and it landed on rapists.

Yeah, I like the brevity now. The extended cut would have had more action, but the not so extended cut of it instead made it feel like a quick, sudden strike that threw everything into chaos. The emphasis was ultimately more on the chaos and destruction than it was on the straight up gunfights.

And dude, you have no idea. I was rewriting stuff as it went. I don't even know what I am going to do with Jen yet, I didn't come up with the idea to spare her and make her important until the post where Marcus blows up Jason.

Page 84 was a bloodbath.

And on another note, I'll wait to see if Brandon has anything to add to this conversation before I move us along.

Is it just me or do we tend towards a lot of juxtaposition with a lot of our scenes? I mean just now I'm noticing the stark difference in mood between the two vehicles. The lightness of conversation in the SUV and the serious talk in the truck. It just seems to me that this sort of thing occurs naturally throughout the thread now I think about it. Very rarely is the same thing happening in two parallel scenes at the same time.

It's an interesting observation, I hadn't really thought about it. (Another example would be Jeff & Willow getting drunk while Eli & Brandon fought for their lives). My instinct would say that's not a bad thing, though.
