http://www.boston.com/news/local/new_hamps...g_man_is_alive/ Five years later, family remains convinced missing man is alive July 10, 2006 CORNISH, N.H. --Blaine Hector was last seen on Christmas Eve, 2001, running into the woods behind his father's home. Family members say he was there to show his dad a used car he was interested in buying. But the owner of the auto dealership called police and reported the car stolen. When Hector saw the officer pull up to the house, he took off and hasn't been seen since. Police Chief Doug Hackett remembers searching for hours that day with police from three towns, the county sheriff's department, State Police and a search dog. He fully expected Hector to show up. "The next day's Christmas. He's got two kids. He'd been a stay-at-home dad with two kids," he said. "We expected the next day we'd be picking him up or he'd be calling." The search continued the next day. In the spring, authorities flew over the area in a helicopter "to see if we could see anything that would indicate there was a body or a camp or something up in the woods," Hackett said. "We half expected hunters to possibly come across something, but it's been several years now," Hackett said. "It clearly is a mystery." When he vanished, Hector was 30, married and living in Milford. His wife has since divorced him on grounds of abandonment. His father died two years ago, not knowing whether his son was dead or alive. But his mother, Freda Washburn of Canaan, is convinced he's alive. "He's out there somewhere," she said. "For some reason, he doesn't want to be found as yet." Relatives say Hector, the youngest of three sons, was deeply wounded by the death of his brother, New Hampshire National Guard Spec. Wade Hector, who died in truck accident in Saudi Arabia in 1991. After his brother's death, Hector suffered from depression and dropped out of college. "He seemed to take on the attitude that he didn't care about anything anymore," said his aunt, Phyllis Leavitt of Lebanon. When Hector's father died in 2004, police staked out the funeral watching for Hector, Hackett said. "But also, we're curious what happened," he said. "None of it makes any sense." Hector already was in the National Crime Information Center database because of the outstanding arrest warrant in Cornish. Hackett recently added his name to the state police list of missing persons as well hoping the added attention could help solve the mystery. "I'm not sure where he is or what he's doing," his mother said. "But hopefully when he finds himself, he will return." ------ Information from: New Hampshire Sunday News, http://www.unionleader.com © Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
