Amber Shawnell Hoopes Above Images: Hoopes, circa 2001 Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance Missing Since: September 14, 2001 from Idaho Falls, Idaho Classification: Endangered Missing Date Of Birth: December 27, 1980 Age: 20 years old Height and Weight: 5'5, 140 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Hoopes wears a diamond stud earring in her upper left ear. Clothing/Jewelry Description: A white t-shirt, gray and white boxer shorts and a short gray robe. Medical Conditions: Hoopes has been diagnosed with vitaligo, a skin condition that causes white-colored spots to extend from her left thigh to her ankle. Details of Disappearance Hoopes resided with her grandparents in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was last seen inside her home on September 14, 2001 at approximately 10:30 p.m. Her grandparents saw her reading in her bedroom at that time. One of her grandparents awoke at approximately 1:00 a.m. on September 15 and noticed that Hoopes's television set and lights were turned on, but she was not in her room. She has never been heard from again. Hoopes's grandparents owned Burgener's Auto Body Shop, which adjoined their residence. Hoopes occasionally used the business's computer to e-mail her friends. The monitor was turned on, but there was no sign of Hoopes in the area. One of the shop's pickup trucks disappeared from their parking lot on the night Hoopes vanished. The vehicle was discovered abandoned in a nearby parking lot shortly afterwards. The keys were in the ignition, but there was no additional evidence at the scene. An image of one of the shop's trucks is posted below this case summary. Keith Glenn Hescock has been investigated for possible involvement in Hoopes's case, and also the 1993 disappearance of Stephanie Crane. Hescock kidnapped a fourteen-year-old girl in June 2002. She escaped from him and he later committed suicide. Hescock had worked for the Hoopes family, and his neighbor says he was in Challis, Idaho the weekend Crane disappeared from that location. He also owned a yellow pickup truck similar to the one that may be connected to Crane's case. Authorities have not been able to link him to either disappearance, however. Hoopes left all of her personal belongings behind at her residence, including her paycheck. Her relatives stated that it is very uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. Hoopes is described as being socially withdrawn and a regular churchgoer. Authorities believe that she may have been abducted from her home. Hoopes's case remains unsolved. http://www.kpvi.com/index.cfm?page=nbcstories.cfm&ID=2506 AMBER HOOPES, 4 YEARS LATER Sep 14, 2005 Four years ago was the last time anyone saw Amber Hoopes alive. She was abducted from her home in the early morning hours of September 15th. Although her parents believe she was murdered and her body buried in the Heise area, there are still many unanswered questions. Suzanne Hobbs talks with the family and investigators. The day seems like a normal day at work at Classic Truck and Auto Body east of Idaho Falls. But the reminders of Amber Hoopes' 2001 abduction are everywhere. This was the last place she was seen by her parents before she disappeared. Hevenlee Hoopes, Amber's mother: "Seems like forever that I've been able to talk with her, but time seems like it has passed really fast." Brent and Hevenlee Hoopes are busy at work, but can't forget the fact that Amber will never walk through this door again. She was living at her grandparents home, next to the family business when she was abducted. Hevenlee showed me her room is about the same as it was four years ago. Some of Ambers favorite possessions are left untouched. Although Amber's body has not been found, the family created a monument at the nearby cemetery as a special place to pray and think about Amber. It's a place those who love and miss Amber visit often. The Bonneville County Sheriff's office hasn't forgotten this case, it's considered active, and tips come in on a regular basis, most recently from California and Kansas. Those leads were ruled out. Sgt. Doug Metcalf her abduction is currently featured in a multi-state law enforcement magazine. The Hoopes family is in constant contact with investigators trying to solve this case. Meanwhile, they're quite sure they know what happened. Hevenlee Hoopes: "I think she came out to shut the computer off, and she ran into Mark out here, and then I think it just escalated from there. He just took her, and I think he took her up to Heise and killed her." Mark Keith Hescock is the prime suspect, a former employee of Classic Truck and Auto Body. He died in a shootout with police after he abducted a 14 year old girl in June 2002. Sgt. Doug Metcalf, Bonneville County Sheriff's office: "Where mark isn't here to interview or that, we can't rule him out as being a suspect or rule him as being the only suspect, so every lead that we get we're gonna continue to investigate until we do get a closure or resolution in this case." The Hoopes family would like to have her body found, to give closure. Brent Hoopes, still has questions: "Because we know nothing there may be, ya know, if we found her body, bring it home that might help answer some questions." Amber may be gone, but not forgotten. Hevenlee Hoopes: "She just was really special to us, and ya know i just don't want anybody to forget and we'll never forget. Of course, we have our memories and we'll take that with us. No one can take that away." Brent and Hevenlee say the first two years after Amber's abduction were the most difficult, but the last two years they've found peace knowing Amber wants them to be happy and not mourn her death. Amber would have turned 24 years old this December. |

http://www.localnews8.com/Global/story.asp...nav=menu554_2_2 National Missing Person's Day Hits Close With Local Family Posted: Sep 14, 2008 09:45 PM EDT Updated: Sep 14, 2008 09:45 PM EDT By: Aman Chabra, Reporter Sunday marked seven years since Amber Hoopes went missing from her grandfather's home in Ammon. On the anniversary of her dissapearance, family members honored her memory as part of Missing Persons Day in the state of Idaho. "Sometimes, it seems like just yesterday that she went missing," said Audra Burgener. Amber was Audra's neice. Amber's family believes she was kidnapped on the day she went missing in 2001. They think her disappearance was connected to a plot from someone trying to get back at Amber's grandfather. While she is still yet to be found, Amber's family put balloons on her memorial in Idaho Falls Cemetary. They also visited a small tree planted in her honor in Freeman Park. Over the past 7 years, Amber's family has been very active in trying to raise awareness of the amount of missing persons. In 2006, Audra Burgener went to Boise and spoke in the legislature about making September 14th "Missing Persons Awareness Day". The vote was backed by Idaho Representative Janice McGeachin. It was approved unanimously. As Missing Person's Day in Idaho passed with many families looking for their missing family members and friends, Burgener offered some words of comfort. "Never, never give up hope. Always believe that there is somebody that knows, and keep it out there. Keep reminding people that your loved one is missing. Involve yourself with the case, as much as (law enforcement) will allow you," she said. Idaho, New York, and Nebraska are the only 3 states with official Missing Persons Days. The day for raising awareness nationwide is April 6. |

IDAHO FALLS - Monday marks the 8th anniversary since Amber Hoopes disappeared from her Idaho Falls home. Families and friends gathered together for Idaho's Missing Person's Day to get support from the community. The search for Hoopes is active, but cold. The family met with friends and the community at a free bar-b-que to get the word out about Amber and also hundreds of other missing people in Idaho. "People forget and they forget that it can happen to their family, their loved one no matter how old or young they are," said Audra Burgener, Amber's Aunt. Amber Hoopes' family offered the free bar-b-que to everyone in the community. They say besides raising awareness, they wanted to give back to the people who have helped them in their search for Amber. http://www.localnews8.com/Global/story.asp?S=11129905 |
