Sunday, March 05, 2006 Valentine Sally February 14, 1982 February 14, 1982 Seven to nine miles outside the city of Williams, on Interstate 40, an Arizona highway patrolman, searching the right-of-way for a tire lost off a passenger vehicle, spotted her as she lay against the fence. She had been dead for three to four days before his discovery. And an autopsy failed to find a conclusive cause of death. Cops nicknamed her "Valentine Sally", because she was found on Valentines Day. She is believed to have been between the ages of 19 and 25, being 5’4" to 5’8" tall, weighing 120 to 130 pounds, had blonde shoulder length hair and pierced ears. About a week before her death, she had undergone a root canal, but had not returned to her dentist to have it filled. At 3 a.m. on February 5th, at the Monte Carlo Truck Stop, she may have been in the company of a white male, 60 to 65 years of age, 5’8" to 5’10" tall, medium weight, wearing a two-tone brown checked leather vest—the kind made in Mexico and a felt cowboy hat adorned with peacock feathers. Coconino Sheriff’s detectives were seeking two men, a white and black truck-driving team, which might be able to give some further information. The victim may have been seen wearing a white pullover sweater with maroon stripes, designer jean, "Seasons" brand, size 8, and was barefoot. In 1987, she was exhumed and examined by anthropologists in the hopes they could discover further information to identify her. She can be found resting in the Williams Cemetery listed as " Melody E. "Sally Valentine" Cutlip. She remains unidentified. Anyone with information, please contact: Coconino Sheriffs Department 911 E. Sawmill Rd. Flagstaff, Arizona 86001 (928) 266-5034 |

After searching through the newspaper archives.. valentine salyy was indeed identified... article Aug 5.1984 Syracuse Herald-American The Post-Standard Body identified . after two years FLAGSTAFF. Ariz. (AP) — After a sheriffs deputy spent 1.000 hours on spare-time sleuthing, authorities finally know the name of a 16-year-old girl whose body was found under a tree on Valentine's Day 1982. ' Now they hope to learn who beat the Florida runaway to death. "We need to establish who she' was with and where," Coconino County Sheriff Joe Richards said Friday. The girl, identified as Melody Eugene Cutlip, was believed to have been in the company of truckers at a truck stop at Ash Fork, about 50 miles west of Flagstaff on I-*). Richards said. "She was probably killed in the truck and dumped in the area where she was found," off Interstate 10, he said. There was no identification with the body and no name for the marker when she was buried as an indigent. But Sheriffs Lt. Jack Judd spent more than 1,000 hours of his spare time trying to identify the girl. Sending out more than 1.650 teletype messages to other law-enforcement agencies. Judd worked with a Flagstaff dentist in comparing dental information on missing girls, and he persuaded the owner of the truck stop to put up fliers and query truckers who stopped. Positive identification ended up being made through a New Mexico forensic odontologist's comparison of the victim's teeth with teeth in a 5.1984 Syracuse Herald-American The Post-Standard |

OUR Thank's Go Out To Anthrobones & Websleuths for this new infromation... Dr. Homer Campbell Board Certified Forensic Odontologist Office of the Medical Investigator, New Mexico bio: http://omi.unm.edu/bios.html In one case, Dr. Campbell claimed to identify to a medical certainty the body of Melody Cutlip; the real Melody Cutlip was later found alive and well in Florida.Dr. Campbell has also testified beyond the limits of acceptable science in his field, stating in court that bite marks matched to a reasonable degree of medical or dental certainty. Bio: Dr. Campell is an active member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and also a past president. http://www.corpus-delicti.com/forensic_mis.html I'm confused. Did they actually identify her or make a mistake? Why is the Doe still on Doe Network? |

wow, this doctor is scary... Arizona Daily Sun Friday February 19, 1982 ARTIST SKETCHES VICTIM Coconino County Sheriff's Department detectives are seeking information concerning a black and white male truck driving team that might have information about the death of a young woman discovered near Williams Sunday. The body of a woman, who was believed to be 17-19 years old, was discovered at about 11:45 a.m. by a highway patrolman who had stopped to help a stranded motorist about nine miles west of Williams. The body was discovered about 25 feet off Interstate 40, beneath a cedar tree. Based on an artist's drawing of the girl, a waitress at the Monte Carlo Truck Stop near Ash Fork said the girl was in the truck stop at 3 a.m. February 5, and was complaining of a toothache. The body of the girl discovered Sunday had had a root canal started about a week before her death, said Sgt. Jack Judd. "It had been drilled out and allowed to drain, but it hadn't been filled yet." Judd said. "Based on the information we've been able to obtain, we believe the time of death to be between 4 and 6 that morning," said Lt. Tom Brawley, "She was probably in the company of two males, one was a white male about 60-65 years old and the other was a black male. "Our opinion at this time is that she had been riding with two guys, probably a truck driver and his partner." |

Arizona Daily Sun Wednesday February 17, 1982 DEPUTIES SEEK ID CLUES ON WOMAN Coconino County Sheriff's Department Detectives still are puzzled as to the identification and cause of death of a young woman whose body was discovered near Williams Sunday. The body of the woman, who was believed to be 17-19 years old, was discovered at about 11:45, Sunday, by a highway patrolman who had stopped to help a stranded motorist about nine miles west of Williams. The body was discovered about 25 feet off the interstate 40 under a cedar tree. Sgt. Jack Judd of the sheriff's department said the girl had been dead for about two to three weeks. "We're trying to obtain an ID through dental records right now," Judd said. "It's amazing how many 5-foot-5, 125-pound blonde females there are missing across the U.S. right now. It's unreal." Judd said dental records may provide a positive clue to making that determination, however, as the girl discovered Sunday had a root canal started about a week before her death. "It had been drilled out and allowed to drain, but it hadn't been filled yet," Judd said. |

The face-down body of a white female, aged seventeen to twenty-four was discovered under a tree in Williams, Coconino County, Arizona, on February 14, 1982. Death had occurred on or around February 1.[30] Because the remains were located on Valentine's Day, the victim was nicknamed "Valentine Sally." The victim was approximately five feet five inches tall and weighed 120 pounds and had strawberry blond hair, which was straight and around ten inches long, and blue eyes. The victim, who was killed by either suffocation or strangulation,[31] wore Seasons brand jeans with a handkerchief and an earring in her left ear. It is unknown if her right was pierced, as the right ear was not recovered. A distinct white sweater with thin red stripes and a bra were found near the remains, which may have belonged to the victim. It is possible that the victim was seen at a truck stop in Ash Fork, Arizona in early February of the same year. Valentine Sally appeared to have an incomplete root canal on one of her molars, which may have caused an infection that she suffered from. Distinct marks on the body were a scar on her right thigh and on her left foot.[32] In 1984, the girl was misidentified as a runaway, who was later located alive in 1986. Because of decomposition and scavenging animals, her fingerprints could not be obtained, although her DNA and dental charts were.[ |
