Car pulled from river may contain bones of man missing since 2001
December 15, 2012|Staff report
Chicago Police Marine Unit boat. (Tribune photo illustration.)A car reported missing when a Lincolnwood man disappeared in 2001 was pulled from the Chicago River midday today, after the Chicago Police Marine Unit located it using new sonar equipment, authorities said.

Authorities will have to use DNA testing to determine if the bones found today are those of Michael Jansson, who was 21 when he disappeared early on March 9, 2001, but the vehicle identification number of the car found matches the one that was reported missing when Jansson disappeared, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office said the car pulled from the river contained bones that will have to be forensically examiner before they are positively identified.

Police suspect bones found inside a car pulled out of the Chicago River Saturday might belong to a man missing more than a decade.

Authorities pulled a car out of the river about noon that matches a vehicle Michael Jansson was last seen in, according to police.

Jansson disappeared on March 9, 2001 when he was 21 years old, police said.

The medical examiner’s office will use DNA to help positively identify the remains, police said in a statement, adding that a positive identification will not be made “anytime soon.”

“We are hopeful we will be able to provide some closure to his family, who has been missing a loved one for nearly 12 years,” the statement said.

The Chicago Police Department’s Marine Unit used sonar technology to locate the car, the statement said.
