http://www.wwmt.com/articles/devlin_35506_...ft_berrien.html Possible link between missing boy and charged abductor April 19, 2007 - 6:21PM UPDATED: BENTON TOWNSHIP (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – There is new information in the six-year-old case of a missing West Michigan boy. Steven Kraft was only 12 years old when he disappeared back in February, 2001. He was last seen walking his dogs in his Benton Township neighborhood in Berrien County. For days after Steven vanished volunteers and police searched for him, but to this day he's never been found. The FBI says it's investigating to see if Michael Devlin, an accused kidnapper whose arrest captured national headlines earlier this year, could be connected to the case of the missing West Michigan boy. In St. Louis the FBI announced the case of the missing West Michigan boy is among several the agency is focusing on as they learn more about the world of Michael Devlin. Devlin was charged earlier this year with kidnapping multiple boys. Police captured Devlin with the boys in Missouri. In the past, the FBI says Devlin traveled the road where I-94 meets 196 in Berrien County to get to his parents cottage in Pentwater in Oceana County. This is very near where Kraft disappeared. "They've done a travel time line of Devlin and they've put him in West Michigan," said Special Agent Al DiBrito of the FBI. For Kraft's family the new lead offers new hope. "I actually think it's a good thing, it can't hurt keeping his face in the media keeping his name in the news," said Kraft’s sister, Jodi bopp. "We haven't found anything saying he's dead, we haven't found any remains. On the other hand we haven't found anything saying he's alive, so you just got to keep the hope and wish for the best," said bopp. "All we do is hope for the best and hope someday he'll walk through the front door or police will find him and release him and he can come home," said Kraft’s father Steven. New tips in this case can be phoned into the National Cetner for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678. |

http://www.wzzm13.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=74038 Investigators want to know if accused kidnapper Michael Devlin had anything to do with the disappearance of a Michigan boy. The disappearance of 12-year old Steven Kraft was a high profile case back in 2001. You can still find flyers with his picture on it. He would now be 18-years old. Now, investigators are asking for your help. They say Michael Devlin, who's accused of kidnapping two boys in Missouri, may have been headed to the Pentwater area around the time of Steven Kraft's disappearance. In Benton Harbor, Steven Kraft's older sister says, "One minute you think that the worst has happened, then the next minute you get a glimmer of hope", says Jodi bopp. It's been 6 years since bopp has seen her 12-year old brother. He disappeared from their Benton Township home in 2001 when he was outside with his dogs. Steven Kraft Sr. says, "We've been through all kinds of stuff. We searched every inch of Berrien County." The Kraft family had accepted the possibility that the case may never be solved. This week, all that changed during a press conference about Michael Devlin. Sgt. Al Nothum of the Missouri Highway Patrol says, "We want to talk to anyone who knows about his travels to Michigan." Michael Devlin is accused of kidnapping two boys and holding one of them for over four years at his home in Missouri. Now, investigators are looking at the possible connection to Steven Kraft. They say the Devlin family had a cottage on Lake Michigan, in Pentwater. The route from St. Louis, would have taken Devlin right through Benton Township, where Kraft disappeared from. Investigators say the Devlin family typically visited in the summer, but Michael was known to take trips in February. Sgt. Nothum says, "We don't know for sure what vehicle. But, anyone with information. We want to talk to you." Devlin might have been driving a 1983 Silver and Gray Toyota pick up truck, with a white stripe and gray camper top. The Kraft family says they appreciate any new information that might help investigators find Steven or help solve the case. The task force that was formed to look into these possible cases wants any information, big or small. You can contact them at 636-239-7496. |

http://www.kfvs12.com/Global/story.asp?S=6527164&nav=8H3x Michael Devlin is now a suspect in five cases of missing boys By: Crystal Britt Just how far does Michael Devlin's trail lead? A police task force is looking into five cases of missing children, wondering if Devlin could be responsible. The five cases all involve the disappearance of young boys, including one in Illinois, three in Missouri, and one in Western Michigan. It's that case in Michigan that's raising a lot of questions. Police now know Devlin has strong ties to that part of the country. "It's very eerie to think this guy, you've watched him on TV and he could possibly know after six years where your brother is." Jodi bopp gets cold chills just thinking Michael Devlin could have kidnapped her brother Steven Kraft. The 12-year-old went missing in February of 2001 in Benton Township, Michigan. A police task force now says, as a boy, Devlin's family would rent a cottage in Pentwater, Michigan: just two hours north of Benton Township. "I think the similarities are there as to what he did in Missouri could have happened up here", said Benton Township Police Chief Vince Fetke. "This guy was in Michigan, the highway was more than a mile and a half from our home. Then to come to find out he had kidnapped two other children for sure." Those children, Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby reportedly lived in a Kirkwood apartment building with Devlin. After police removed evidence and Devlin's lawyers removed the rest of his things, the landlord was left with filth. The floor is covered with trash, cat hair, and even cat feces is everywhere. The stove is caked with dried food and the bathroom is a mess. There's also plenty of evidence of Devlin's reported love of gaming: including numerous receipts from video stores. Meanwhile, the FBI subpoenaed all Devlin's time sheets from the IMO's where he worked for more than 20 years, trying to connect him with numerous cases of missing boys. Police searched the Devlin vacation rental in and around Pentwater, but so far have no physical evidence linking Devlin to Steven Kraft. The victim's sister just wants Devlin to come clean. "What's another 10-20 years, he's not getting out. Let us have our children back, let us be able to put them to rest or bring them home", said bopp. |

Police still seek answers 9 years after Steven Kraft vanished Steven Kraft is shown at left at 12 years old, long with a depiction (right) of what he might look like now. 12-year-old disappeared after going outside with his dogs By JULIE SWIDWA - H-P Staff Writer Published: Monday, February 15, 2010 1:10 PM EST BENTON TOWNSHIP - Hardly a day goes by that Benton Township Detective Lt. Delmar Lange doesn't think about Steven Kraft, especially now that Lange's own children are grown. "It's every parent's nightmare. My youngest was close to his age at the time, and I think how much those parents have missed out on," Lange said. Steven was 12 when he disappeared nine years ago after going outside with his dogs. The dogs eventually returned home, but Steven's family never saw him again. The family was living in the Benton Heights neighborhood where houses have since been demolished for an airport runway expansion. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is again asking for the public's help. Anyone with information about Steven's disappearance or his current whereabouts is asked to call (800) THE-LOST (800-843-5678), or the Benton Township police at 926-8221. Calls are confidential and can be made anonymously. Lange said the case is still open and police still get tips from time to time. "We'd like to get this resolved. It's one of those really hard cases," said Lange, who has been with the police department since 1980. "We'd like to give the parents some closure one way or another. Not knowing is the worst." Lange said he still has hope sometimes for Steven. "There have been cases just in the last couple of years when kids that were missing for years have turned up," he said. When Steven disappeared he had light brown hair, was 5-foot-1 and weighed 95 pounds. He was last seen wearing an aqua and purple jacket, a tan- and white-striped shirt, tan parachute pants and black boots. jswidwa@TheH-P.com http://www.heraldpalladium.com/articles/20...ews/1199315.txt |

http://www.wsjm.com/Vigil-Planned-For-Stev...-Anniv/12202687 Next week will bring the eleven year anniversary of the disappearance of 12 year old Steven Kraft from Benton Township, and there's a vigil planned to raise fresh attention to his case. Kraft went missing on the night of February 15th, 2001 while walking his dogs, and extensive searches, as well as national media attention, never led to any solid information on what happened to him. Now, family hope to get people thinking again about the boy who would be 23 years old this year. They're gathering at six 30 PM on Holly Street in Benton Township next Wednesday to talk about his disappearance. Police tell us that they'll still occasionally get leads in the case, and that they do periodically still speak with Kraft's family. Anyone with information on his disappearance can call the Benton Township Police Department at 926-8221. |

http://www.wsbt.com/news/wsbt-steven-kraft...0,4864535.story BENTON TOWNSHIP – A family came together Wednesday night to pray for their son and brother, Steven Kraft. 11 years ago on February 15, 2001, Kraft vanished from a Benton Township neighborhood. He was only 12 years old. He would now be 23. The family hasn't lost hope – In fact now, more than ever, they're all speaking out, hoping someone, anyone, will come forward with the truth. "It’s hard, it really is," said Edward Kraft. Edward was 6 when his big brother vanished. "We had a great childhood, just got cut a little short," he said. Now, 11 years later, Edward finally has the strength to speak out. "Please come forward, we really need closure,” he said. “I miss him. I wish he could come home." Steven’s home used to be on the corner of Holly Street in Benton Township. It has been demolished in the past few years. On the day he went missing, family members said he was playing somewhere outside with his two dogs. When he didn’t come home by curfew, the family knew something was wrong. "There’s not a single day that goes by that it’s not in your mind," said his sister, Jodi Kraft. Jodi said there's no better way to solve this mystery than by keeping it alive. "It’s a battle every day to keep our faith,” Jodi said. “But until we see otherwise, why should we have to believe he's not here?" The Kraft family welcomed loved ones and strangers to pray, remember and ask for help. "Someone out there knows what happened to Steven,” said Steven Kraft Sr., Steven’s father. “I don't want to press charges, I just want to know what happened to my son." It's the questions that keep them wondering, worrying and wanting answers. Kraft's father said police are still actively working this case. “They said they have a lot of leads, but three quarters of them don't pan out," he said. And that's why, 11 years later, they feel this message can still reach someone who many have an idea of what happened to this boy. "I'm not ready to say goodbye," Jodi cries. "I love him with all my heart and if he could see me out here, we are going to keep the faith, we are going to find you sooner or later," Steven’s father said. Police are still taking tips. If you have any information on this case, call Benton Township Chief Vince Fetke at 269-926-8221. The Kraft family moved to Wisconsin a few years after Steven vanished, but they moved back to the area shortly after. |

http://www.wsbt.com/news/local/cold-case-f...-kraft/31288368 COLD CASE FILES: The disappearance of Steven Kraft Kristin Bien POSTED: 10:18 PM EST Feb 15, 2015 UPDATED: 07:05 AM EST Feb 16, 2015 It is a case you may remember: 12-year-old Steven Kraft disappeared 14 years ago, on February 15th, from his Benton Township neighborhood. In 2001, police had no idea what happened to him. And today, not much has changed. The case is as cold as it gets. But there is still hope. Police say someone knows what happened to Steven Kraft. If the woods that run along Blue Creek in Benton Township could talk, they might have a story to tell. The trees, and what lies inside, may know what really happened to 12-year-old Steven Kraft. "I would almost bet my life it was foul play," says Jason Joiner. Joiner is Kraft's older cousin. He remembers frantically searching the woods and surrounding area in the hours and days after Kraft went missing. "I remember he was very rambunctious. Outgoing. Adventurous," says Joiner. Joiner lived in Coloma at the time and remembers getting a phone call from a family member with the news that Kraft had disappeared. Joiner says he rushed down to Benton Township to help. "I thought by now there would be some sort of solution -- more clues -- I thought it would be resolved by now," says Joiner, "but here we are years later and we are still like the first day -- not knowing what would happen." What did happen? Kraft lived on Holly Street in Benton Township with his parents and younger brother. Their house has been torn down now but it used to sit on the outskirts of a neighborhood called Benton Heights. Much of that neighborhood has been demolished in favor of airport property. Police say, on February 15th, the 5th grader left his home sometime between 7pm and 8pm to go outside and play with his two dogs. Police say he had several family members and family friends that lived in the neighborhood and he often played along his dead end street or in the nearby woods. "He had went out, asked permission, was told to go out and stay in the area and that is the last he was seen," says Detective Lieutenant Brian Smit with the Benton Township Police Department. Smit is now in charge of the case. Family and police organized ground searches of the area. Dive teams looked into nearby creeks and ponds after footprints were found. And Kraft's case was featured on Americas Most Wanted. A couple days after he disappeared one of his dogs came home another was found wandering about a mile away near where Blue Creek meets Red Arrow Highway. Still no evidence of what happened to Kraft was found. At a press conference shortly after he went missing, it was clear, police were frustrated. And not a lot has changed. "I guess what I am asking is, do you have any idea?" we asked Smit. "No, I don't think we do at this point," Smit responded. Kraft is still listed as a "missing endangered child" Smit says. But he would no longer be a child. The Center for Missing and Exploited Children released an age enhanced photo of Kraft last year. Today he would be 26 years old. And while police call this case "cold," they say, it will never be closed. "It is frustrating that we are into 14 and 15 years now and we are still at the beginning," says Smit. Kraft's family continues to hope that he is still alive but, at the very least, they just want answers. "I am not going to give up hope. I do believe it can be solved," says Joiner. Police are looking for anyone who may know something. Even if you think they already know -- call. Benton Township Police Department 1-269-926-8221 |
