http://www.murfreesboropost.com/news.php?viewStory=13174 Cold Case Unit looking seriously at 11 unsolved murders By: LISA MARCHESONI, Senior Writer Posted: Sunday, September 28, 2008 6:55 am Email Print Survivors of a murdered loved one never attain closure but hope the killer will be brought to justice, a sheriff’s detective said. That’s why sheriff’s Detective Lt. Bill Sharp and Detective Sgt. Dan Goodwin of the Cold Case Unit and Detectives Randy Groce and Ralph Mayercik are investigating 11 unsolved murders. “It’s just an open wound for the family and society,” Goodwin said. Two of the most publicized unsolved murders were: 1. Building contractor Dave Robertson, 57, of Bradyville Pike, who was shot and killed in April 2004 in his driveway. 2. China Videon, 16, a Riverdale High School student who disappeared in Oct. 19, 1999, after visiting with her mother at a beauty shop. Her body has not been found. Robertson’s sister Faye Jordan and her husband, Robert, found him lying on the ground between their two houses. More than four years later, she daily wonders what happened. “It’s just kind of like you look over your shoulder wanting to know who did it,” Jordan said last week. “It’s just still like a nightmare. We want to know who it was and why they did it.” Robertson’s widow, Lura, and family members and friends posted a $60,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the murderer. They distributed hundreds of posters and advertise in newspapers for information. Groce said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agent Jason Wilkerson followed more than 100 leads — some out-of-state — that turned to nothing. They received some information last week that might be related to the case. “We’ve eliminated a lot of folks,” Groce said. The calls slowed during the past four years but keep trickling in. People who have information may call Groce at 904-3049. Jordan knows Groce and Wilkerson investigate every lead. At one time, she thought she would be satisfied just knowing who killed her brother. Now she wants to know why. “We keep praying,” Jordan said. “We believe it will be solved. It’s going to take somebody telling somebody else.” Mother Suzanne Videon shares Jordan’s sense of waiting and not knowing who killed her daughter. Videon knows in her heart her daughter is dead but doesn’t know where her body is located. She wonders how her daughter died and who is responsible. “I don’t understand people — how their minds work — how they could hurt someone,” Videon said. She hopes justice will be served with the Cold Case Unit investigating the case. The case file compiled by detectives who previously investigated Videon’s disappearance was sent to the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Sharp and Goodwin said the review generated new leads they’re investigating right now. The reviewers gave them new directions to use as another tool in the investigation. People who talked to China Videon in the last few days before she disappeared are asked to call Sharp at 904-3015 or Goodwin at 904-3034. When the Cold Case detectives reopen a case, they contact the family and try to keep them informed about the investigation. “No promises are given,” Goodwin said. They spent an enormous amount of time interviewing witnesses and following leads, sometimes traveling out of state. Sharp and Goodwin hope they will make one to two arrests each year. They hope adding a Cold Case page to the sheriff’s Web site will gain some leads. Other unsolved murder cases from latest to earliest include: 3. James Richmond was shot and killed in 2006 at his home on U.S. 231 South. Detectives have followed several leads. 4. Rhonda Bailey of Nashville was found lying in water in 1994 beside state Route 99 (New Salem Highway) near Rockvale. Cause of death was listed as a drowning. 5. Construction worker Marvin Argue was found shot and killed with a shotgun in 1993 when Kittrell Elementary School was under construction. He was a native of Ireland. 6. James McCullough, who retired from the military, was killed in 1987. His body was found off Almaville Road. Evidence of trauma was discovered at Nice Mill Dam. 7. Marjorie Ewing’s skull was found in 1981 near the Stones River National Battlefield. 8. Christiana Postmaster Fred Wiggs suffered a fatal beating in 1980. 9. George Reffner was shot and his body found in 1980 beside Interstate 24 near La Vergne. 10. Stanley Smith was fatally shot in 1977 on Van Cleve Lane near the battlefield. 11. Eugene Ewing suffered fatal stab wounds in 1977 off Halls Hill Pike. People who have information about any of these cases are asked to call Sharp or Goodwin at the above listed numbers. Lisa Marchesoni may be reached at 869-0814 or at lmarchesoni@murfreesboropost.com. |

Team to investigate '99 disappearance Teen's mom hopes cold-case inquiry will bring closure By BRANDON PUTTBRESE Gannett Tennessee MURFREESBORO — Eight years ago this week, 16-year-old China Videon left a beauty salon in Murfreesboro and disappeared without a trace. And not a day has gone by since that Suzanne Videon doesn't think about her daughter and what happened. "You just wonder, will there ever be any closure? Any justice? Is there anybody who knows? Do they feel any guilt?" Suzanne Videon said. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Department's newly established Cold Case Unit is taking a new look at the unsolved disappearance of the Riverdale High School student who has been missing since Oct. 19, 1999. Cold case investigator Dan Goodwin said he and Detective Lt. Bill Sharp are poring through two large boxes of evidence in the case, looking for fresh leads. They hope for new leads "Sometimes, after a long period of time has gone by, people are more willing to talk — we hope they will," the detective said. "We're interested to hear from anybody who has information about China Videon." Suzanne Videon believes someone killed her daughter and witnesses know what happened, they just haven't come forward. But she's hoping they will. "If you have closure, I think it's easier to deal with. I know she's not alive, but in the very back of your head, you have that hope that you're wrong," the mother said. She hopes a new investigation will bring her peace. Several detectives have investigated her case over the past eight years. Suzanne Videon remembers that her daughter, who left the salon in Jackson Heights Plaza, needed to get gas for her car, then planned to return home. The mother knew something was wrong when she got home and China wasn't there. Foul play suspected She notified the sheriff's department about her daughter, distributed posters with China's picture and contacted the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The first break in the case came in June 2000 when China's Mazda Protege was found abandoned at a south Nashville apartment complex. Upon finding the girl's car, investigators agreed that foul play was involved in China's disappearance, Goodwin said. Suzanne Videon is grateful the detectives have turned their eyes to her daughter's case again. "I think it's great, it needs to be looked at," the mother said. "I think the case could be solved, somebody out there saw something and knows what happened." http://tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/articl...10407/1017/NEWS |

http://www.newschannel5.com/story/19836128...r-old-cold-case New Tips Sought In 13-Year-Old Cold Case Posted: Oct 16, 2012 5:01 PM EDT Updated: Oct 16, 2012 5:01 PM EDT 16-year-old China Videon 16-year-old China Videon Suzanne Videon Suzanne Videon MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- A mother has asked for help to solve her daughter's cold case murder in Rutherford County. On October 19, 1999 then 16-year-old China Videon disappeared from a beauty salon in Jackson Heights Plaza. China's car was found a year later abandoned at an apartment complex off Harding Road in Antioch. Police thought the girl ran away, but her mother, Suzanne Videon disagreed. "How could anybody who knew something sleep at night?" Suzanne Videon asked. "If they have kids, how would they feel it if was their kid?" During the 13 years since her disappearance Rutherford County Sheriff's detectives have tracked leads, but have not made any progress. China Videon was legally declared dead in October 2007. Cold case detectives took over the case soon after. "We believe China was abducted, killed and disposed of by someone who knew her well," said Rutherford County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Dan Goodwin of the Cold Case Unit. "The case is more difficult because her remains have never been found." Officials hope that after 13 years those who were teenagers at the time of China's disappearance, and adults now will come forward with information about the case. "They should be in their 30s now and may have children. They may reflect on that and come forward with any information that they have." Sgt. Goodwin said. Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office at (615) 898-7770. |

http://www.murfreesboropost.com/sheriffs-o...ction-cms-32968 Sheriff's Office asks for help in unsolved abduction By: THE MURFREESBORO POST Posted: Wednesday, October 17, 2012 1:00 am Suzanne Videon believes someone holds information that could lead to solving the 1999 disappearance of her 16-year-old daughter, China. The daughter, a Riverdale High School junior, visited with her mother the night of Oct. 19, 1999, at a beauty salon in Jackson Heights Plaza before leaving to see a friend. Suzanne Videon hasn’t seen her since. China Videon’s car was found abandoned June 23, 2000, at an apartment complex off Harding Road in Antioch. Rutherford County Sheriff’s detectives have tracked leads for 13 years. Even though China Videon was legally declared dead in October 2007, Suzanne Videon hasn’t given up hope that her daughter’s disappearance will be solved. She also believes people have information about her daughter’s case. “How could anybody who knew something sleep at night?” Suzanne Videon said. “If they have kids, how would they feel it if was their kid?” Detective Sgt. Dan Goodwin of the Cold Case Unit, a division of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, began investigating China Videon’s disappearance five years ago. “We believe China was abducted, killed and disposed of by someone who knew her well,” Goodwin said. “The case is more difficult because her remains have never been found.” China Videon worked at Bi-Lo grocery store on South Rutherford Boulevard near Southeast Broad Street in Murfreesboro. Goodwin is asking for her co-workers or friends who may heard any information to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 615-904-3038. “We’re hoping after 13 years that folks who were teenagers then and know about things in her life will come forward,” Goodwin said. “They should be in their 30s now and may have children. They may reflect on that and come forward with any information that they have.” Some people who have information may not have contacted the Sheriff’s Office at the time of China Videon’s disappearance because they felt their information might be hearsay. “If you heard something or were told things, we want to hear from you,” Goodwin said. “If you heard from the person who did something with China, we want to hear about it.” Suzanne Videon said she is hoping people with information will contact Goodwin. “It might not be significant to them, but it could be significant,” Suzanne Videon said. |

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – There are possible new leads in an old missing person case in Rutherford County. News 2 has confirmed that cold case detectives from the sheriff’s department visited Goose Creek, South Carolina, last weekend searching for evidence in the China Videon case. Videon went missing on October 19, 1999 after going to get groceries. She was a 16-year-old student at Riverdale High School. Her car was found abandoned eight months later at an apartment complex in Nashville near Interstate 24 and Harding Place. Since her disappearance, there have been very few clues for investigators to go on. Rutherford County detectives put up fliers with the teen’s picture in Goose Creek asking folks to call the homicide unit with information. All they’ll say at this point is the persons of interest are “Chris” and “TJ.” Further details have yet to be released. Videon is 5 feet 3 inches tall with a pierced belly button and several piercings in her ears. She also has a butterfly tattoo on her right hip and a scar on her right knee. Two sheriffs deputies from Tennessee are trying to find the person who murdered a 16 year old girl. She has been missing since 1999. Detectives from Rutherford County near Nashville are in the Goose Creek area because they say a Goose Creek man is critical to their case. Det. Steve Kohler tells News 2, “her name is China Videon, and she was a Riverdale high school student and she was an employee of Bilo and she basically disappeared in October 1999 and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.” You can see China’s face on hundreds of flyers the detectives distributed in the Goose Creek area over the weekend. China Videon - Missing China Videon – Missing Det. Steve Craig says, “she was a normal 16-year-old girl. She had a job. She was working to pay for a car that she bought for herself. She lived at home with her mother and her sister.” But that all changed on October 19, 1999. “She had stopped at the grocery store. She had gotten some groceries and she was on her way to go back and see the two people at the apartment, Chris and TJ. And nobody’s seen or heard from her since.” They say Chris and TJ are persons of interest. TJ is now living in Goose Creek. Det. Kohler said, “we have had a chance to talk to him. Unfortunately he didn’t have the same desire to talk to us, so we didn’t really get anywhere with him at this point.” They say “TJ” now works at a big box store as a manager on James Island. On a past trip to the Lowcountry they painted China’s name on the Folly Beach boat, with a hashtag #TJ. Now they need your help. “He has told and confided in people in the past about this incident. And we have reason to believe that he has confided with people here In the Lowcountry. We would love to find those people and get any information they may have that can help us bring this case to a resolution.” If you have any information about the person who murdered China, call crimestoppers at 554-1111. The detectives say they want to thank business owners, residents and local law enforcement who are helping them with this case. Detectives are using #TJ on social media to help bring attention to the case |

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – There are possible new leads in an old missing person case in Rutherford County. The missing teen’s mother is now hopeful those new leads will result in the case finally being solved. News 2 confirmed on Sept. 8 that cold case detectives from the sheriff’s department visited Goose Creek, South Carolina, the weekend prior searching for evidence in the China Videon case. Last week while on vacation in France, Suzanne Videon received word that detectives decided to take a second look, with a fresh set of eyes at her daughter’s cold case. China Videon Courtesy: The Videon family “All I know is they’ve reopened it and started working on it,” Videon said. China went missing on October 19, 1999 after going to get groceries. She was a 16-year-old student at Riverdale High School. Her car was found abandoned eight months later at an apartment complex in Nashville near Interstate 24 and Harding Place. “It seems like it’s been a long, 16, torturing years, actually,” Videon said. “She’s deceased; I felt it when it happened. It was in the middle of the driveway by the gas tank and I felt it.” The mother continued, “It was 7:50 that night. I felt it. I can’t explain that. It was something that went from my head, all the way through my body down to my feet.” Since the 16-year-old’s disappearance, there have been very few clues for investigators to go on. China Videon Courtesy: The Videon family “It’s an open wound still,” Videon said. “You wonder everyday what really happened and how it happened, and if you ever will find her remains. There’s no body that’s been found at this time.” Rutherford County detectives put up fliers with the teen’s picture in Goose Creek asking folks to call the homicide unit with information. All they’ll say at this point is the persons of interest are “Chris” and “TJ.” Further details have yet to be released. “Because you don’t know how it happened or what happened,” the mother said. “It makes you wonder how much she suffered, and how someone could do that.” Videon is hopeful that her daughter’s cold case can be solved, so she can close this chapter of her life. “You want some closure and some justice served,” she told News 2. China Videon is 5 feet 3 inches tall with a pierced belly button and several piercings in her ears. She also has a butterfly tattoo on her right hip and a scar on her right knee. Anyone who sees her is urged to call 1-800-THE-LOST or the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office at 615-904-3046 or CrimeStoppers at 615-893-STOP. |
