Nathan Andrew Edberg

Above Images: Edberg, circa 1999

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: April 14, 1999 from White Bear Lake, Minnesota
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: September 17, 1977
Age: 21 years old
Height and Weight: 6'4, 210 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male. Black hair, brown eyes. Edberg's ears are both pierced; his left ear is pierced twice. His nickname is Nate. He wears wire-framed glasses for reading and driving.
Clothing/Jewelry Description: A white shirt and gray corduroy pants.
Medical Conditions: Edberg was depressed at the time of his 1999 disappearance.

Details of Disappearance

Edberg was last seen leaving Decoy's Bar and Grill on Fourth Street in White Bear Lake, Minnesota on April 14, 1999. Witnesses at the bar did not recall the exact time he departed. His pickup truck was found in a ditch at the juncture of Interstate 694 and Interstate 35E, near the Canadian border, shortly thereafter. There was no sign of Edberg at the scene and no evidence of foul play. Authorities said it appeared as though Edberg had missed the turn on the highway and ended up driving into the ditch. He has never been heard from again.
The bartender at Decoy's Bar and Grill told authorities that Edberg was a regular customer at the establishment. He said that Edberg arrived at approximately 7:30 p.m. on the night of his disappearance and ordered a beer. The bartender stated that Edberg seemed to be happier than he had been during previous visits.

Edberg was apparently depressed in April 1999. His parents were going through a divorce, he had lost his job, and he had broken up with his girlfriend. At the time he vanished, Edberg was living with a cousin. His mother and father did not report him missing until they realized his truck had been in the impound lot for several days; when they hadn't heard from him they had thought he simply wanted to be left alone to think through his problems.

Edberg was a resident of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota in 1999. He has not used his bank accounts or credit cards since his disappearance. Police are treating his case as a missing person's one, as there is no evidence of foul play. His case remains unsolved.

Prayer helps mom cope with son's disappearance
By Dave Hrbacek
Wednesday, 25 March 2009
Jackie Edberg of St. Odilia in Shoreview will never forget April 14, 1999.

Jackie Edberg of St. Odilia in Shoreview holds a picture of her son, Nathan, who disappeared on April 14, 1999, at the age of 21. She is helping to organize a prayer service marking the 10th anniversary of his disappearance. The service will take place April 14 at St. Odilia. - Dave Hrbacek / The Catholic Spirit That was the day she last saw her son, Nathan, who was 21 at the time. He ate dinner at her house, then left for police reserve training at White Bear Lake City Hall.

She never saw him again. His truck was found abandoned on the shoulder of Interstate 694 where it is joined by 35E. There were a few footprints heading east from the scene, but nothing more.

Edberg and her three remaining children have spent the last 10 years wondering whether to mourn his death or hold out hope that he is alive somewhere.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of his disappearance. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. April 14 at St. Odilia.

St. Odilia liturgical coordinator Mari Meyer has been working closely with Edberg on the service, and said the event, while focusing on Nathan, is for anyone who has loved ones missing or wants to pray for families dealing with the issue.

“We want people, in honor of Nathan, to pray for all missing children,” Meyer said. “The message that Jackie clearly wants to convey is our hope is in Christ.”

Surrendering to God

For Edberg, the last 10 years have been a journey of deepening her faith as she continues to hope for Nathan’s reappearance, while at the same time, resigning herself to the reality that she may never see him again.

“I do think Nathan’s disappearance has given me a stronger relationship with God,” she said. “When I surrendered it to God, it became easier to live with.”

Though a cloud of mystery hangs over the whole incident, one thing is clear — Nathan was a troubled young man the night he pulled out of his mother’s driveway in his white Ford Ranger pickup truck.

First, there was his father, Bob, who had let his life spiral downward due to alcoholism. The effects of this led to his separation from Jackie in 1997.

They were separated when Nathan disappeared, although Nathan was talking regularly to Bob at the time. The couple divorced in 2000, however, and Bob died in 2001.

Then, there were career and employment issues. Nathan tried college for a year after graduating from White Bear Lake High School in 1996, then worked a series of jobs before quitting the last one the month before he disappeared.

Finally, there was the breakup with his girlfriend. They had dated for four years before the relationship ended.

“Every area of his life was falling apart,” Jackie said. “There was just an awful lot of pain in Nathan’s life in coming to terms with what was happening.”

That is why she followed him into the driveway after dinner the night he disappeared. She wanted to leave him with an encouraging word.

“I remember saying, ‘Nathan, hang in there. You’re going to feel good again soon,’” she said. “And, he said, ‘I love you, Mom. I want to feel good again.’”

Getting the word out

It was several days later before Jackie started to worry. Nathan was living with his cousin at the time and Jackie checked in with him a few days later and left a message for her son.

The day after that, she filed a missing person report. Then, she was planning to try to get media coverage that would hopefully lead to finding her son.

A major news story, however, changed her plans.

“Six days after Nathan’s disappearance, the Columbine shootings happened,” she said. “I just wasn’t going to get any local coverage of one missing kid after those shootings.”

Still she persisted, contacting local newspapers and TV stations, then moving to national outlets like “Oprah” and “America’s Most Wanted.” But nobody picked up the story, perhaps because there was no evidence of foul play.

That fact gives Edberg hope that maybe her son is still alive. Yet, she says it’s not like him to just leave everyone he knows behind without a trace or an explanation. As many challenges as he faced, he still cared deeply about his family, she said.

The family has tried hard to move forward without Nathan. In the days and week’s following his disappearance, Edberg realized that how she dealt with it would have a heavy impact on her children — Tony, now 28, Jennaya, 24, and Allison, 18.

She did not want them to grow older looking back on April 14, 1999 as the day their mother stopped laughing and enjoying life.

“I think you choose to be happy or you choose to be miserable [after a tragedy like this], but you work at both,” she said. “For my life, I’ve chosen to find happiness. We’re closer as a family.”

Edberg wants the prayer service to evoke more hope than sorrow. “I would like to see it as a comfort and a support,” she said. “with a message that God’s in charge. That’s where we should all have hope.”

And, she hopes the prayer service will deliver a message to family and friends of Nathan that she repeats often: “Everything works for the glory of God for those who believe.”

Case of missing cadet brings back memories for mother
Associated Press
WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. - The case of a missing West Point cadet from White Bear Lake is bringing back bad memories for a Vadnais Heights mother who's own son went missing seven years ago.

About two weeks ago, 21-year-old Nicholas Rossini left his family's home and hasn't been seen since. He's one of the nearly 200 adults reported missing in Minnesota.

Another is Nathan Edberg, who was also 21 when he went missing seven years ago after leaving a downtown White Bear Lake bar. His car was found abandoned on a nearby interstate, but that's were the trail ended.

His mother, Jacqueline Edberg, works at the same school as Rossini's mother and lives within a few miles of the family in Vadnais Heights.

"Both young men, they just seem to have vanished," Edberg said. Friends following both cases have told her: "It's a small world."

"If it's such a small world," she asks, "where are our sons?"

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension hopes to find out with the help of a recently formed a three-person team that will review all of the state's missing person cases.

The team, which was created by the Legislature during the past session, will examine the 894 files on missing children and adults, looking for gaps in evidence, especially DNA and dental records. Finding that information also could help to identify 21 corpses being held around the state.

"There's a huge potential for a lot of matches and solving a lot of cases," said Janell Rasmussen, state administrator for the bureau's missing persons unit.

The White Bear Lake Police Department is leading the investigation into Rossini's disappearance, but if he's not found for another two weeks he will be entered into the missing person's database at the BCA.

Not all cases of missing adults go into the database, she said. It's up the initial investigating agency.

"The problem that we have with missing adults is that in some cases, they want to be missing, and they have the right to do so," she said. "Agencies have to use discretion."

For now, all, Pat Rossini, the mother of Nicholas Rossini, can do is sit, wait and ask the public for help in finding her son.

The day before he disappeared, her son crashed her car in Minneapolis. He might have been worried about the impact of the car accident on his military career, she said.

Since then, he has missed Christmas. They hope he comes home in time for his Jan. 2 return flight to West Point. They don't know what it means "When you hear the phone, your heart stops and you think, 'Maybe it's Nick,'" Pat Rossini said.

The Rossinis appeared on the Fox News Channel show "On the Record" on Thursday night, showing photos of their son and sharing the telephone number for people to call if they spot him.

"Some people are still just finding out. The hope is that maybe there's one more person out there in the dark that will see it now," Mark Rossini said.

Mother still searching, 11 years after son disappeared

Vadnais Heights -- April 14th is always a difficult day for Jackie Edberg. It has been a very difficult day for the past 11 years. "I didn't imagine people could just do that, just vanish," the mother of four said.

Jackie's son Nathan was 21 years old when he disappeared more than a decade ago. She hasn't seen or heard from him since a Wednesday evening dinner. "I know that evening it had started to rain and it rained the whole week," she recalled.

Edberg's pick-up truck was found by a state trooper in a ditch where I-35E and I-694 connect in Vadnais Heights. "The wipers were off, the lights were off, the car was locked, windows rolled up; there wasn't anything to indicate it was a panic situation," Jackie said.

Aside from the truck, clues into the disappearance have been hard to come by. "I think about it quite a bit," Sgt. Tom Paget of the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department said. Paget was the lead on the case for almost a decade. "I looked at all I could and came up with a lot of nothing, a lot of blanks. I just never found that missing piece," he said.

The last place Nathan Edberg was seen was Decoy's in White Bear Lake. The restaurant is no longer there, but investigators say Edberg left his wallet on the bar.

Jackie Edberg does say her son was a little distressed following a break-up and his parent's divorce, but notes she could not imagine Nathan would ever walk away from his 3 younger siblings. Jackie says there have been reported sightings in Florida, Mexico, and Canada over the years, but none have led to anything concrete. "Any lead there is I will follow up on," she explained.

The search for Nathan Edberg and the search for answers are both very much alive. "Everyday I guess there is hope that the phone call, or as I pull into my driveway that you know, I'll walk through the door and he'll be there. (Hope) doesn't go away," she concluded.

Circumstances of Disappearance
The night of his disappearance Nathan went to police reserves at the White Bear Lake Police Department. He was considering a career in law enforcement. Later that night, he stopped at the bar Decoy's Bar and Grill for a couple of drinks with old friends, in St. Paul, MN. No one saw him leave, however, his vehicle was located in a ditch at Highway 35 East and Highway 694, near the Vadnais Heights-Little Canada border.

It appeared that Edberg tried to get the car out of the ditch but damaged the wheels. Authorities aren't sure if he was picked up by someone or if he wandered away. It is unclear if he was hurt in the accident. The vehicle was seen, coincidently, hours later by his friends as they were driving by the area. The State Patrol towed it that night. But no one saw Nathan Edberg.

Edberg apparently left his wallet at the bar so he probably wasn't carrying any identification when he vanished.
He did not show up for a job he was supposed to start nor a medical appointment.
Foul play isn't suspected, but relatives say it would be unusual for Nathan Edberg to take off without notifying his family. No one has accessed his credit card or bank accounts.

Nathan Edberg, who was planning to attend college after taking a year off, was starting to seek treatment for depression. He was depressed following a breakup with his girlfriend, and his parents' pending divorce. He had also lost his job.
Authorities were not told about the disappearance until almost five days after Edberg's truck was found. Nathan was living with a cousin in St. Paul. When his mother didn't hear from him for several days, she and the rest of the family figured he was sad over the pending divorce and simply wanted to be alone.
