Body found in shallow grave at Lake Jordan By Marty Roney mroney@gannett.com LAKE JORDAN -- A property owner in the Titus area made a grisly discovery Sunday morning when he found human remains bound in a tarp and buried in a shallow grave. The man, who isn't a suspect in the case, called the authorities about 10 a.m., said Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin. "We haven't been able to ascertain the race, sex or how long the remains have been there," Franklin said. "But they have obviously been there for a long time. Once it was confirmed that there was remains, we stopped what we were doing and contacted forensics. We wanted to preserve any evidence that may be inside the tarp." Franklin realizes people may jump to the conclusion that the remains are those of Tracy Kegley, an Elmore County woman who was reported missing almost 10 years ago. Her car was found in April 1998 on the side of Old Georgia Road north of Wetumpka with her young child inside. The child was unharmed. Despite exhaustive search efforts and a $100,000 reward for information seeking her whereabouts, Kegley, who was 30 at the time of her disappearance, has never been found. "At this time we have no evidence to believe this is her," Franklin said. "I called Mr. Steve Pittman, her father, Sunday afternoon as a courtesy. I told him what we had found, but that I didn't believe it was Tracy." Kegley's is the only active missing person case in Elmore County. "We are in the fact-finding phase of the investigation right now," Franklin said. "We are relying heavily on what a pathologist will be able to tell us. The body may be someone from outside the area, or even another state. The person who buried it may have come to the lot by road or they may have come by water." The man who found the remains has a second home on Lake Jordan, the sheriff said. He was doing yard work when he went to the lot beside his to do some cleaning up. That's when he saw the tarp. "He told us he just thought someone had thrown the tarp away, and it was laying on top of the ground," Franklin said. "He pulled on one end, and found out it was buried. When he found out what it was, he was obviously very upset. We don't believe he had anything to do with this other than finding the body." The shallow grave was about 18 inches deep and 5 to 6 feet long. It was about 40 feet from the water, the sheriff said. It appears the body had been wrapped inside the tarp, and then a small rope was used to tie the tarp around the body. The remains didn't appear to include any clothing or shoes, he said. http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/p.../707230313/1001 |

Families Await Identification On Body Found In Elmore County July 24, 2007 06:33 PM CDT Help Us Cover This Story Click Here to Help Us Cover the News 30-year old Tracey Kegley vanished some 10 years ago but there is growing evidence the skeleton found in a shallow grave on the eastern side of Lake Jordan is not her. "Some things have come out that would indicate it's not her," said Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin. So who is it? "I don't know," Franklin said. With that in mind, Elmore, Coosa, and Montgomery Counties have taken a keen interest in the case because those counties have missing females. The sheriff says they are fairly certain the remains are those of a female, average height but it's still unclear how old she was. The skeleton was covered with 3 inches of lime and early indications are the body had been there for at least 5 years. The identity will eventually come. The more difficult challenge will be to figure out who killed her and why. "We have one theory that maybe she was killed at another location and brought here," Franklin said. Forensics will have to rely on dental work to identify the female. That identification could come at any moment. http://www.wsfa.com/Global/story.asp?S=6834547&nav=0RdE |
