Details of Disappearance

Reid was employed as a clerk at the Grocery Cart convenience store on Oregon Highway 99 in Eugene, Oregon in 1997. She was working at approximately 1:00 a.m. on January 27, 1997 when a customer witnessed an unidentified Caucasian male forcibly leading Reid out of the store and into his vehicle, just prior to the store's closing time. A sketch of the suspect is posted below this case summary. Authorities believe the man was attempting to rob the store at the time he abducted Reid.
The suspect is described as being in his late twenties to early thirties. He is approximately 5'9 and weighs 165 to 185 pounds. The suspect has shoulder-length brown hair and had a moustache with facial stubble in January 1997. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, a short-sleeved white shirt and jeans.

The man's vehicle is described as being an early 1970s to early 1980s compact or mid-size pickup truck. It is white or light-colored with a horizontal blue stripe that is approximately eight inches wide which runs the length of the driver's side. The stripe appeared to be at even height with the top of the truck's bed. The vehicle may have a white canopy at cab height that covers the bed. The truck did not have an extended cab or a slider. The front seat appeared to be at even height with the bottom of the rear window, indicating that it was possibly a bench seat. The suspect and his vehicle remain at large and Reid's case is unsolved.

Eugene woman vanished 10 years ago Saturday
1/27/2007, 12:30 p.m. PT
The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Ten years ago, a man returning empty beer bottles told police he saw a woman being taken from a Highway 99 grocery store by a man who shoved her headfirst into a light-colored pickup.

The woman, Rebecca Kathleen Reid of Eugene, has not been seen since.

Though the disappearance long ago stopped making the papers or the television news, it's still fresh in the minds of the detectives who worked the case.

Detective Tracey Belshee and her colleagues tracked down 1,500 leads in the first year after the Jan. 27, 1997, kidnapping. And she is still in touch with Reid's family, including her husband, parents and in-laws.

Reid's family requested that the 10th anniversary of her disappearance pass without contact from journalists, Belshee said. But the case weighs heavily on their minds. Each time a body is found, Belshee said, they get anxious and wonder if it might be her.

Each time, the answer has been no.

The night she disappeared, Reid was the 38-year-old mother of a teenage boy. Just 5 feet 2 inches tall and 120 pounds, she was a bubbly woman with an infectious smile. She had grown up in Springfield and graduated from Thurston High School.

The abduction occurred as Reid, the manager, prepared to close the same store where she had met her husband 16 years earlier.

The man who said he witnessed the abduction described the suspect as white, in his late 20s to mid-30s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 175 pounds. He had brown, shoulder-length hair, a mustache and a stubble beard. He wore a dark baseball cap, short-sleeved white shirt and blue jeans.

A month after the kidnapping, a man tried and failed to take a woman from a grocery store at knifepoint. Investigators tried to link the man convicted in that case, John Erva Dunn, to the Reid case, but never named him as a suspect.

A brief profile on "America's Most Wanted" didn't crack the case, and none of the tips that flooded into the department panned out. There have been no confirmed sightings of Reid.

Despite the lack of leads, the case remains assigned to a detective.

Woman's disappearance unsolved after 10 years
By Rebecca Nolan
The Register-Guard
Published: Saturday, January 27, 2007

Ten years have passed since Rebecca Kathleen Reid was kidnapped from her job at a Highway 99 grocery store, never to be seen again.

Though the case fell from the front page long ago, it hasn't left the minds of the Eugene police detectives who first responded when Reid disappeared from the Grocery Carts store at 1 a.m. Jan. 27, 1997.

Detective Tracey Belshee worked the case back then, tracking down 1,500 leads the first year with her colleagues in Eugene's violent crimes unit.

And she is still in touch with Reid's family, including her husband, Dearld Reid, her parents and her in-laws.

Reid's family requested that the 10th anniversary of her disappearance pass without contact from the media, Belshee said.

advertisement But the case weighs heavily on their minds. Each time a body is found in Oregon, Washington or elsewhere, they get anxious and wonder if it might be their lost Becky, she said.

Each time, the answer has been no.

Reid would have turned 48 last month.

The night she vanished, she was the 38-year-old mother of a teenage boy. Just 5 feet 2 inches tall and 120 pounds, she was a bubbly woman with an infectious smile. She had grown up in Springfield and graduated from Thurston High School.

The abduction occurred as she prepared to close the store she managed at 1510 Highway 99 North. The store has since become a Dari Mart.

A man returning empty beer bottles told police he saw her being taken out of the store by a man who pushed her head-first into a white or light-colored pickup truck. He said Reid seemed dazed.

He described her abductor as white, in his late 20s to mid-30s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 175 pounds. He had brown, shoulder-length hair, a moustache and a stubble beard. He wore a dark baseball cap, short-sleeved white shirt and blue jeans.

A month after the kidnapping, a man tried to take another woman from a different Grocery Carts store at knifepoint. She fought him off.

Investigators tried to link the man convicted in that case, John Erva Dunn, to the Reid case, but never named him as a suspect.

And a brief profile on "America's Most Wanted" didn't crack the case, either.

None of the tips that flooded into the department after the crime panned out. Most were too vague - people who claimed to have seen someone who looked like Reid or her abductor, but with little additional information. There have never been any confirmed sightings of Reid, investigators have said.

The case remains assigned to a detective who handles any new informa- tion.

For now, Reid's kidnapping remains one of Eugene's unsolved mysteries, one still remembered by those who paid attention to the news a decade ago.
