Still missing after 15 years

Man who fled with son also suspected of killing nurse in 1993

By Anita Miller
News Editor

Lockhart — On Dec. 26 it will have been 15 years since authorities in Caldwell County made the grisly discovery — 38-year-old nurse Latricia White had been shot six times in the head.

Her body was found in bed at the Lockhart home of Lee Herman Wackerhagen Jr., who had disappeared, along with his nine-year-old son Chance.

Neither has been seen since, prompting the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to issue yet another plea for the public’s help.

Wackerhagen, who was 40 at the time, was the non-custodial parent of blue-eyed, blond-haired Chase, whose mother lives in Kingsville.

Wackerhagen is wanted both for the murder of White, who was a nurse at Central Texas Medical Center and the mother of two, by Kingsville police for interfering with child custody; and by the FBI, who issued a warrant for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution in January 1994.

He is described as six feet tall and, at the time he disappeared, 230 lbs, with dark blond hair and blue eyes and scars on his right leg and both arms. Law agencies have said he is to be considered armed and dangerous.

Wackerhagen has been known to wear a mustache and glasses. Chance, who has a small dimple on his right cheek, would be 24 years old now.

Wackerhagen had left the scene of White’s murder in a green pickup truck that was later recovered in Austin. Authorities at the time said there was blood in the truck.

The case has been featured on the television show “Unsolved Mysteries.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the FBI Austin at (512) 345-1111; the Texas DPS at (800) 346-3243; or (800) THE-LOST (843-5678) and refer to case number M-126791244.

CASE DETAILS

Was Dub the killer or a victim?
On December 27, 1993, Jack White went to visit his daughter, Latricia, at her home in Lockhart, Texas. Latricia, a 38-year old nurse, hadn't been seen or heard from in almost 24 hours. Jack said that he was worried:

"Everyone was concerned about Latricia because she just hadn't gone to work Monday. And she never fails to go to work or at least call."

Jack rushed into the home and found his daughter in her bedroom.

"I just called her name and then I went over and felt her. And I knew that she was dead."

Latricia White had been shot six times in the head with a .22 caliber weapon. Her death stunned her friends and neighbors. She left behind two children and lots of unanswered questions. Despite the violent nature of the crime, there were no signs of a struggle, and nothing in her house had been disturbed.

Dub’s truck was found in Austin
Just as puzzling was the disappearance of Latricia's live-in boyfriend, Lee Wackerhagen, a local trucker nicknamed Dub. Also missing was Dub's nine year old son, Chance, who had been visiting for the Christmas holidays. Sheriff Mike Bading of the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department said that meant they had two possible scenarios to investigate:

"The fact that her boyfriend, Dub Wackerhagen, could not be found led us to several different areas to investigate. Number one, is he a suspect? Could he have committed this crime? The other one, is he a victim? Has he also been injured?"

Three days later, Dub's pickup truck was found abandoned in Austin, Texas, about thirty miles from the crime scene. In the truck, investigators found Dub's hunting rifle, which had not been fired, his checkbook, and his wallet. In the back were a toolbox, a spare tire, and Christmas gifts. Some of the gifts were unopened, and they were all streaked with blood. According to Sheriff Bading:

"Initially in the investigation we felt that this blood could have come from our victim. That was later ruled out. The blood type was not the same as our victim. So we feel that someone else was injured. Not seriously, but someone else was injured."

Could that someone else have been Dub or Chance? The question could not be answered. All of the blood tests were inconclusive.

The police and the White family believe that Dub murdered Latricia in a jealous rage. But Dub's family and friends are convinced that he and Chance also met with foul play. Barbara Stage is Dub's sister:

"We haven't heard anything from him at all. And that tells me that he's got to be dead."

Dub's friend, Melissa Reagan, was shocked:

"I don't know who did it. I just know that he couldn't have done it and then just disappear off the face of the earth."

To the police, however, Dub was the obvious suspect, especially after they began to take a close look at his relationship with Latricia. According to Latricia's family, Dub was extremely jealous and suspicious. Dub's ex-wife and Chance's mother, Gaye Williams, agreed:

"I saw that he was a good man when I met him, and when I left him I was scared to death of him. He had a temper. He treated my oldest boy terribly, and I was scared."

Dub's son, Chance, was often the focus of his arguments with Latricia. Two days before Christmas, a heated argument led to Dub packing his bags and threatening to leave. Just three nights later, Dub, Chance, and Latricia were seen enjoying themselves at a local restaurant. The argument was apparently forgotten. But late the very next day, Latricia's father found her shot to death in her bedroom. Dub and Chance had disappeared. Three days later, Dub was formally charged with first-degree murder. Four months passed with no sign of Dub or Chance. Then, Chance's maternal grandfather, O.P. Williams, got an anonymous phone call at his home:

"All he said was, 'Help me.' And then the phone was jerked out of his hand and slammed down. I looked over at my wife, and I said, 'That was Chance.'"

Could the plea for help actually have come from Chance? Dub's family is convinced the answer is no. They believe that the phone call was a hoax and that Dub and Chance were murdered. But Latricia's family and the police believe that Dub is a killer and that he's still very much alive.

New hope for a Caldwell Co. cold case
Marshals dig for missing links in White murder

LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) - "She was a very sweet girl, very soft-hearted, gentle," said Susan White as her eyes welled up with tears.

The pain is evident in White's face when she talks about her oldest daughter, Latrica White, after all these years. The 38-year-old was a nurse at the Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos.

"She loved to help people and she would just do anything for most anybody," said White.

But Christmas 1993 was the last time the mother saw her daughter.

"Christmas Day, she seemed kind of on edge," said White.

Latrica came over to her parent's house with Lee Wackerhagen and Lee's 9-year-old son Chance. Chance was visiting his father over Christmas. Lee was supposed to take Chance back to his biological mother in Kingsville, Texas the following day.

"He had said something to her when they were over here at Christmas, for her to ride with him, and [Latrica] said 'I'm not going,'" said White.

Chance's mother, Gaye Walshak, said the original plan was for Lee to bring the 9-year-old back to her home in Kingsville, Texas near Corpus Christi on Christmas Day.

"Chance called and asked to spend one more day and I told Chance that was ok," said Walshak.

It was the last time Gaye would hear her son's voice. She did not know much about her ex-husband's girlfriend. Latrica and Lee had gone to high school together and reunited years later.

"He did his thing and she did hers, and I don't think it was as serious as [Lee] thought it was," said White.

The day after Christmas, Latrica's father found his daughter dead inside her home on the family's property. At first Caldwell County investigators did not realize they had a homicide on their hands.

"It was cleaned up, somebody had taken the time to clean something up before they left," said Caldwell County Sheriff Dan Law.

An autopsy revealed White had been shot six times in the head with a .22-caliber weapon, and Lee and Chance were nowhere to be found.

Sheriff Law was a jailer at the time and remembered helping investigators do a thorough search of the property.

"We literally were looking for a needle in more than one haystack," said Law.

Two days later, Lee's truck was found abandoned off Manor Road near the airport. Blood-stained children's toys and unopened Christmas gifts were in the back, but the mystery deepened.

"That blood is not, does not belong to the victim Latrica White," said U.S. Marshal Hector Gomez.

Gomez and his team of detectives in Austin now have a chance to crack the case. They hope DNA testing currently being done at the University of North Texas crime lab will reveal if the blood belongs to Lee or Chance. Investigators also came across records of a 10-minute call made from the mounted cell phone in Lee's truck after Latrica's body was found.

"There's no question in our mind that Lee Wackerhagen was at least alive several days later," said Gomez.

Several new discoveries have peaked the US Marshals' interest and given them reason to believe he had help escaping. The Wackerhagen family posted an obituary in the local paper several years after Lee's disappearance.

"It just comes right at us, that you know, if you want to make somebody dead, you put an obituary in the paper," said Gomez.

Lee's life insurance policy also remains unclaimed.

If you drive to the end of County Road 82 nowadays, you will not find Latrica's old home. The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office said an accidental electrical fire caused it to burn to the ground. As far as what happened to Lee, who would be 56 now, and his son Chance, who would be 25, there are as many theories as unanswered questions.

"He's probably in Mexico somewhere," said Sheriff Law. "And that's just where all the signs lead to."

There is also the possibility he and Chance are no longer alive, but White does not buy it.

"I know he's out there," said White.

Chance's mother has not changed her phone number in Kingsville since her son vanished, hoping he will call back someday. Based on what investigators have told her, she believes her son witnessed Latrica's murder and said his footprint was found in a spot of blood at the scene.

"I believe Lee killed his girlfriend and took my son," said Gaye. "And I believe his family knows something."

Lee's father Lee Wackerhagen, Sr. committed suicide in 1999.

Now that investigators are looking into the case again, White's hope is renewed.

"We're not going to certainly come out here and say 'we're gonna solve this case,' but we are certainly going to give it our best effort," said Gomez.
