Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: April 12, 1958
Age: 31 years old
Height and Weight: 6'2, 215 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Dark blond hair, blue eyes. Dudley may have a moustache, beard or a goatee. He wears eyeglasses. A cougar is tattooed on Dudley's right arm. His nickname is Bill.

Details of Disappearance

Dudley resided in a trailer on Martinsburg Pike in Winchester, Virginia in 1993. The property was owned by his girlfriend Cindy Benner's grandmother, who resided in the main house with Cindy and Dudley's daughter. Cindy said that he called her at approximately 9:30 p.m. on October 31, 1993. Dudley had been drinking alcohol and was easily angered when intoxicated. She asked him not to walk down to the house, but he ignored her request and arrived at her door shortly afterwards.
Dudley reassured Cindy that he was calm before she opened the door for him. He became angry after she allowed him inside the home and he hit her in the face, fracturing her nose. Cindy's grandmother woke up after the incident, as did their daughter. Roger Benner Jr., one of Cindy's relatives, and his friend Glen Kerns resided in a mobile home on the property and overheard the disturbance. They arrived at the house several minutes later to break up the altercation. The men had been drinking with Dudley earlier in the day.

Roger and Kerns fought with Dudley outside of the house and Kerns hit Dudley with a baseball bat. The two men left the area shortly afterwards. Dudley calmed down after the incident and apologized to Cindy. He attempted to wipe the blood off of her face as her mother drove up to the residence. Dudley and Cindy's mother did not get along and he stumbled back to his trailer. He has never been heard from again.

Dudley left the area for short periods of time in the past. He always contacted his mother shortly afterwards. Cindy checked his trailer several days after Halloween and noticed that his wallet, keys and additional belongings were placed on his table. She became concerned and called Dudley's mother, who believed that he would return home after he calmed down from the previous argument.

Dudley's mother became concerned for her son's welfare after he failed to contact her for two weeks. She and Cindy visited several bars along northbound US Route 11 from the Virginia state line to Martinsburg, West Virginia and placed posters in the area. His mother reported him as a missing person on December 5. Investigators interviewed Cindy, Roger and Kerns regarding the disturbance on Halloween night. Kerns admitted that he hit Dudley with a bat, but both he and Roger claimed they never saw him afterwards. Their stories were consistent with Cindy's statements.

Dudley's family members asked authorities to consult Florida psychic Noreen Reiner in early 1997. She assisted his mother with the creation of a map of the area where she believed his remains were buried. Authorities searched the specified location near Clearbrook, Virginia and also sent divers to the bottom of two quarries in Virginia and West Virginia, but no evidence was discovered.

Investigators believe that Dudley met with foul play on the night of his disappearance. There are suspects in his case, but there have not been any arrests due to a lack of evidence. Dudley's loved ones said that he had an alcohol problem in the early 1990s, but he is described as a kind person and good worker when sober.

Dudley was born in Alexandria, Virginia. His family relocated to Woodbridge, Virginia sometime afterwards. He resided in Spartanburg, South Carolina with his late father and stepmother in 1976. Dudley married in 1979 and had three children with his wife. They separated in 1985 and he began dating Cindy. Dudley and his wife divorced in the early 1990s and remained friends. He was employed as an automobile body repairman at a Clearbrook used car business in 1993. Dudley's remains have never been located and his case is unsolved.

Some agencies may list 1953 as the year of Dudley's birth.

Missing person: Va. man disappeared after fight with girlfriend
By: Emily Babay
Examiner Staff Writer
August 31, 2010
William D. Dudley hasn't been heard from since he went home after being at the center of two violent altercations on a Halloween night. That was in 1993, and Capt. John Heflin of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said this week that police still are investigating the matter as a missing-person case.

Authorities said Dudley, 35 was intoxicated when he went to the Winchester home of Cindy Benner, the girlfriend with whom he had a daughter, at about 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, 1993.

Dudley became violent and broke Benner's nose. The fight woke up their daughter and Benner's grandmother, who also lived at the home.

One of Benner's relatives and a friend heard the disturbance and went to the house.

The two men had been drinking with Dudley earlier in the day, authorities say, and fought with him outside Benner's residence.

One of them hit Dudley with a baseball bat, and the two left the area.

Dudley reportedly apologized to Benner that night. He left, and was believed to be returning to his trailer, which was located on Benner's property.

He has not been seen since then.

Heflin said investigators continue to look at what role the fights might have played in Dudley's disappearance.

Dudley's wallet and keys were found in his trailer.

He was reported missing by his mother on Dec. 5, 1993.

Dudley would now be 52 years old. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a white man, 6 feet 2 inches tall and 215 pounds. He had dark blond hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Frederick County Sheriff's Office investigations unit at 540-667-0420. Tipsters can also call Crime Solvers at 540-665-TIPS (8477).

Remains found; cold case reopened

Affidavit: Stephens City man went missing after being assaulted with baseball bat in 1993

By Candace Sipos -- csipos@nvdaily.com

STEPHENSON -- County officials are investigating whether remains found in Pittsylvania County on Jan. 5 might be those of a Stephens City man who went missing after being assaulted with a baseball bat on Oct. 30, 1993.

William David Dudley went missing from his girlfriend's mobile home in Stephenson on that date, when he was 35. After years of investigation, Dudley was never found and was declared "legally dead" upon the family's request, according to an affidavit filed with a search warrant Wednesday to obtain medical records from Winchester Medical Center.

Investigator K.C. Bohrer of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division received a call on Jan. 5 from Paul Yokum with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner informing him of the skeletal remains found more than 200 miles away, according to the affidavit.

The office has requested all of Dudley's dental and medical records, including X-ray results, and any buccal swabs from known family members to determine whether the DNA matches that of the remains.

Dudley was at his girlfriend's mobile home on Oct. 30, 1993, intoxicated, when he became involved in a domestic disturbance with her, the affidavit reads. Two men who lived nearby overheard the fight and came to help Dudley's girlfriend, who was related to one of the men.

An altercation started among the men and Dudley was hit by a baseball bat by one of the other two men, according to the document. It does not name either of the men or Dudley's girlfriend.

The investigation opened after tahe incident under the direction of investigator Greg Lambert, who continued the search for answers until he retired from the county Sheriff's Office.

"Many leads, theories, tips etc were investigated, but William Dudley has never been found," the affidavit reads.

Authorities interviewed the two men directly following the incident, but they later refused to talk, obtained lawyers and would not submit to polygraph tests about Dudley's disappearance.

"Many years later," Dudley's family requested that he be legally declared dead, but Bohrer began investigating the incident in 2010 as a cold case, after receiving new information about his "disappearance and possible location of his remains," the document reads.

The investigation is now open as a missing person/possible homicide case.
