http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/coleman_jamaree.html Jamaree Clarence Coleman Left: Jamaree, circa 1993; Right: Age-progression at age 12 (circa 2005) Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance Missing Since: July 24, 1993 from Brunswick, Georgia Classification: Non-Family Abduction Date Of Birth: May 25, 1993 Age: 2 months old Height and Weight: 1'7, 9 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Black hair, brown eyes. Jamaree has a split down his right earlobe, as seen in the sketch posted below his vital statistics. He may also have a mole behind his left ear. Above: Sketch of split earlobe Details of Disappearance Jamaree and his mother, Cheryl Lewrisey Coleman, visited her brother's residence during the early morning hours of July 24, 1993 in Brunswick, Georgia. Cheryl and Jamaree left the house at approximately 3:00 a.m. Her brother offered to give them a ride back to their home, but Cheryl said she would walk. She and Jamaree were last seen together at a gas station on Newcastle and O Streets; they apparently got into a pickup truck driven by Carl Harris. Cheryl's body was discovered at approximately 9:00 a.m., six hours after she was last seen, in Academy Creek, several blocks from her brother's home. The creek is infested with snakes and alligators. Authorities determined Cheryl died as the result of a homicide. Her body was nude and had been mutilated. There was no sign of Jamaree at the scene, but his baby carrier and blanket were left behind. Carl Harris was charged with both Cheryl and Jamaree's homicides and pleaded guilty to the crimes. He was sentenced to two terms of life in prison without parole, plus twenty years for assault. He also strangled Essie Marie Dowdy in November of 1993, and attacked a female acquaintance in October of that year. Harris stated he killed Cheryl a wooded area on Homer Wilson Way on Andrews Island, then left Jamaree at the edge of Academy Creek after he put Cheryl's body in the water. Jamaree is still missing. It is believed he was swept away by high tides. http://www.thebrunswicknews.com/front/310104340063837.php Missing kids still a mystery Fri, Mar 4, 2005 Local cases remain unsolved By MELISSA DONLEY The Brunswick News The faces of three missing children from Brunswick smile broadly in pictures posted on the Internet, but behind the faces are clouds of mystery and sadness. Unlike Jessica Lungsford, the 9-year-old Homossasa, Fla., girl whose face turned up on the Internet as a missing person just nine days ago, the three have been missing for more than a decade. Michael Bennett, then 14, and Monica Bennett, then 15, who have been missing since 1989, would now be adults, and Jamaree Coleman, missing since 1993, would be about 12 years old. Although a lot of time has passed since the three disappeared in two separate incidents, their pictures remain posted on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's Web site. "We never give up on a case until that case is resolved," said Nancy McBride, national safety director for the center. Police say foul play was likely involved in the disappearances of the three Brunswick children. The circumstances surrounding the abduction in 1993 of then 2-month-old Jamaree Coleman have led to grim speculation. Jamaree was with his mother, Cheryl Coleman, on a visit to her brother's home in the Arco area on July 24, 1993. She walked from the residence, but never arrived at her home. Brunswick Police Capt. Larry Bruce, who investigated the case, said the two were last seen alive at a gas station on Newcastle and O streets, where they got into a pickup truck driven by Carl Harris. Harris took them to a wooded area on Homer Wilson Way on Andrews Island, where he killed Cheryl Coleman, he later confessed to police. Her remains were found on the bank near Academy Creek. A search of the bank turned up only Jamaree's baby carrier and blanket. His body was never found. Harris, now 70, told authorities under questioning that he laid the baby beside the creek. It was the last place he saw him. Harris is serving a sentence of life without parole for the murder of Coleman and another woman, Essie May Dowdy, who was found dead in Greenwood Cemetery. Because Jamaree's body was never found, Brunswick police posted his picture on the missing children center's Web site. Brunswick Police Sgt. Kevin Jones said the department has had no leads in the case. Michael Bennett and his sister, Monica, were last seen June 21, 1989, at Heritage Apartments, now known as Merritt Landing Apartments, on Altama Avenue. They reportedly went to help their stepfather, who was separated from their mother, Deborah George, move into another apartment on the day of their disappearance. The stepfather told police he dropped the two off at the apartment complex, but their mother said she never saw them. No one else has either, as far as police have been able to ascertain. There were never any solid suspects in the case, police said. Glynn County police, with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, have revisited the case of the missing Bennett children several times since their disappearance, conducting interviews with family members as recently as two years ago. Police said they have even traveled to Alabama to re-interview family members, but have turned up no leads in the case. |

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A human skull found by a land surveyor scouring a Glynn County canal could be remains from a 1993 killing. Officials said Mike Hovat, a surveyor who collects old soda bottles, set out Sunday to look for tossed-out-treasures near a cemetery but found the skull instead. County coroner Jimmy Durden said that in 1993, police found the headless body of Cheryl Lewrisey Coleman in Academy Creek about a mile from the cemetery. Assistant Coroner Chris Stewart said the skull has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Savannah. Carl Harris pleaded guilty to killing Coleman and her 2-month-old son. He is serving two life sentences without parole. http://www.11alive.com/news/article/210471...e-of-1993-crime |
