http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/soto_herlinda.html Herlinda Ann Soto Above: Herlinda, circa 1993 Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance Missing Since: July 2, 1993 from El Paso, Texas Classification: Endangered Missing Date Of Birth: March 4, 1950 Age: 43 years old Height and Weight: 5'6, 150 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Hispanic female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Details of Disappearance Herlinda's former husband, Ulises Soto, picked up their two young sons from her three-bedroom house in the 1500 block of Bill Ogden Drive in El Paso, Texas on July 2, 1993. He returned to the house on July 5 at 6:00 p.m. to drop the children off. Herlinda and her car had vanished and there was evidence of a violent struggle inside the residence. Blood was smeared on the garage floor and in the hallway of the house, and a trail of blood lead out to the driveway where the trunk of her car would have been. There was no sign of forced entry to the house, but one of the garage doors did not lock. Herlinda's vehicle, a 1989 Mercury Tracer, was discovered abandoned later that day in the 12400 block of Rojas Drive in El Paso. Her blood was found inside. There was no sign of Herlinda at the scene and she has never been seen again. Herlinda was employed as a nurse at the time of her disappearance, and was also an Army reservist. She is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and served eight months in Saudi Arabia as part of her military duty. She had just gotten custody of her two sons when she vanished. Ulises had them every other weekend; he lived about five miles away. He could account for his whereabouts at the time Herlinda vanished and has thus been ruled out as a suspect. Herlinda's loved ones say she was a responsible and conscientious woman who would be unlikely to leave without telling anyone. Authorities believe that Herlinda was assaulted inside the house and then taken away against her will by person(s) unknown. They do not believe robbery was a motive, as Herlinda kept no valuables in her home. Foul play is suspected in her case. Herlinda's case remains unsolved. New Technology Helps Missing, Unidentified Persons Monica Balderrama-KFOX News Reporter POSTED: 7:29 pm MDT July 5, 2007 UPDATED: 8:23 am MDT July 6, 2007 Soon, families with missing loved ones will have new hope, thanks to up-coming technology. The Justice Department announced the launch of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons Initiative, or NamUs, to provide the nation's medical examiners, law enforcement agencies and the general public with the ability to simultaneously search the records of missing persons and unidentified human remains in an effort to solve cases. This initiative may help the El Paso Police Department's cold case unit. "I think that's excellent. The more law enforcement entities know about a case and information sharing, there's always a better chance of cases being solved," said Irene Rivas, who led a team to a desert area in East El Paso in search of the remains of one of her co-workers. "I think about Herlinda quite often. When you don't put closure to something, there's always that thought: what happened?" Rivas said. Herlinda Soto, 43, disappeared from her East El Paso home in 1993 during the Fourth of July weekend. Detectives encountered what they called one of the bloodiest crime scenes in years. The police department's cold case unit has Herlinda's case, but because her body never turned up, it can't be considered a murder case. "One of the main details that stands out is when they found she was missing there was so much blood. They said she couldn't possibly be alive," said Rivas. After 14 years since Herlinda disappeared, Rivas still has hope. "Hopefully, something will come of Linda's case." The NamUS system will be released in 2009. It will allow people to search cases in its missing persons database against cases in the unidentified decedent database. Copyright 2007 by KFOXTV.com.
