SISTER HOLDS OUT HOPE FOR MISSING SIBLING

Published: March 19, 2008

By Marjorie Woodfin

Pilot staff writer

It has been more than 15 years since Patricia Lynn Wilson-Swanberg disappeared from Corvallis. Her mother and father, Brookings residents Jim and Elma Wilson, both died without ever knowing what happened to their daughter.

In an interview in 1993, a year after her disappearance, Elma Wilson said, "It's got us in such an upheaval. It's like the earth just opened up and swallowed her up."

Her siblings still refuse to give up their efforts to discover what happened to their sister.

"We don't even care now about punishment for the man who may have murdered her, but we want closure," her sister, Lisa Wopschall said. "We really just want to know what happened to my sister. The most terrible part is that my parents passed without knowing."

Wopschall, a Brookings real estate agent, and her brothers, Joe, Phil and Jim Wilson, realize that the chance that their missing sister is still alive is extremely remote. There has been no word from or about Wilson-Swanberg since she disappeared in August 1992.

Wopschall said it is hard to believe that her sister would not have contacted her mother and father, or her two sons, who were 14 and 17 when their mother disappeared.

In spite of the long odds, there is still a flickering hope that she may be alive. Wopschall has kept her parents' phone number and same post office box active since they died, her father in 1999 and her mother in 2002. Wopschall explained.that she keeps the post office box and phone number in the remote chance that her sister might be alive and someday want to make contact. "She knows those numbers," Wopschall said.

James and Elma Wilson were well known in Brookings-Harbor as generous volunteers. They were named "Volunteers of the Year" for always being available when someone needed transportation for medical care or other urgent needs. Wopschall said that her father, in spite of ill health, always responded to a plea for transportation, and was still driving the month before his death, June 26, 1999.

About her continued efforts to find her sister, Wopschall said, "It was my take that nothing was being done in spite of e-mails and telephone calls,". She explained that the first detective on the case worked hard, but when he retired the case laid dormant. "We called the Corvallis mayor and the chief of police, trying to get them to respond," she said.

"Since there was such little response I got onto The DOE Network. I posted my sister myself, and I checked remains to look at any Jane Does the age of my sister."

She has also placed all of her sister's information, along with several photographs, on the National Center for Missing Adults, and a My Space Page for Patty Lynn Wilson-Swanberg.

About two years ago Wopschall said she saw a Jane Doe listed that looked like her sister. "I called the Albuquerque Police Department detective who was working the case. He went to the Web site and said, ‘It does look like her. I will call the Corvallis Police Department.'"

Detective Ray Sandoval contacted the FBI to help collect mitochondrial DNA for comparison. The DNA proved that it was not Wilson-Swanberg.

That did alert the FBI, and an FBI agent visited Wopschall. "We spoke at length about my sister," she said.

When the FBI agent discovered that Wilson-Swanberg was not registered with CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), he placed her information on that FBI- funded registry that law enforcement uses to find and identify missing persons.

Wopschall felt that the involvement with the FBI motivated new interest in the case. Soon after that visit Wopschall was contacted by Corvallis Police Detective Mike Wells, who told her that the case had been assigned to him, and was currently a murder investigation rather than a missing person.

Wells told the Curry Coastal Pilot that when a person has been missing as long as Wilson-Swanberg, new cases must take priority. Wopschall said she had been told the same thing, and she understands.

Recently, she was contacted again by Wells, who told her that his current case load was cleared and he would be working full time on her sister's case.

Wells also told the Pilot that it is extremely difficult to make progress on a case without a body.

Wilson-Swanberg was reported missing originally by her employer at a home for the elderly in Corvallis when she failed to report for work Aug. 12, 1992. The same day police found her car parked in a downtown commercial district. Her purse was inside the car. All of her clothing and possessions were found either in her car or her apartment.

The detective originally assigned the case, Detective Bill Marshal, when interviewed in April 1993, said, "We have conducted searches of the river, the parks, the bus stations, cabs, friends and family." He also said that she was listed with the National Crime Index Center, including her dental records.

At the time of her disappearance, Wilson-Swanberg had a restraining order against her estranged husband, C.J. Pursifull, and he admitted being in her car with her Aug. 9, but claimed he had not seen her since.

A Corvallis friend, Bobbie Zibb, told the Pilot in 1992 that she believed Pursifull was involved because he had abused her in the past. Polygraph tests proved inconclusive.

Wopschall pled, "If anybody has any information about my sister, please contact the Corvallis Police Department. Any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is better than none."
