Peggy Sue Case On July 9, 1988, Peggy Sue Case went to a party in Spanish Fork with her boyfriend. She never came home. Case, also known as Peggy Sue Ellsworth, was 28 at the time. Her parents, Richard and JoAnn Ellsworth of Payson, and a fellow employee at the Ensign-Bickford Co.'s Trojan explosives plant in Mapleton, reported her missing on Wednesday, July 13. Case had left a company party on July 9 with her boyfriend, Michael Kufrin, said Spanish Fork Police Lt. Johnston. They went to a private party where witnesses reported some hostilities between the two, and they left that party together. "That was the last time she was seen," Johnston said. Police have been working on the case ever since, he said. Police suspect Kufrin was involved in her disappearance. He now lives in Illinois. But police have no evidence of a crime, Johnston said. "We can't say a murder has been committed without a body," he said. Case's family is reluctant to talk about the case, reluctant to dredge up painful memories. "Every time a woman's body is found, it brings the pain back," JoAnn Ellsworth said. In the 16 years since Peggy Sue disappeared, the family hasn't heard anything, Ellsworth said. She fears the family will never know what happened to her. She steels herself against false hopes, in order to avoid the pain when they are dashed. But, like other family members, she seeks closure. "Where do you go for her birthday? Where do you go for Christmas?" said Pam Wilson, Peggy Sue's older sister. She expressed sympathy for the families of other missing women and wished them peace. Without closure, "that's all they have," Wilson said. DNA tests on family members were done earlier this year to help with identification of a body. The Spanish Fork police still get calls from other police agencies when unidentified bodies are found. None have been Case. She may not be in Utah. Usually bodies rise to the surface if they are not buried deeply. A hand or a foot will be found, leading to the body, Johnston said. Every year, police get calls from hunters who find human remains in the backcountry. Still, finding a body is largely a matter of luck if officials don't know where to look, he said. Johnston cites a case from a few years ago, when a young boy had disappeared. He was found after three or four years, inside a sleeping bag about 75 feet from a paved road. "I can't say anyone's dead without a body," Johnston said. He hasn't given up hope of finding Case, and it wouldn't be too late to file charges -- homicide has no statute of limitations, he said. "If we were able to come up with a body, we'd be able to make an arrest immediately," Johnston said. "It's very frustrating." http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/102920/ |

Human remains found in home where missing Spanish Fork woman lived POSTED 4:24 PM, MAY 22, 2017, BY ELIZABETH SUGGS SPANISH FORK, Utah — A tenant and his friend located human remains in the cellar of a home while removing things on Monday morning. Spanish Fork officers responded to 80 North and 800 East just before 10:30 a.m. after the two individuals reported they found a skull wrapped in a blanket and plastic mesh. According to a press release by Spanish Fork police, the two individuals saw loose dirt in the cellar and started to dig. The homeowner said he knew the previous tenant had gone missing and this is what sparked his curiosity to dig into the dirt, the press release continued. On July 15, 1988, a woman named Peggy Sue Case was reported missing to police, officials said. In 1988, police dug through the cellar and failed to locate Case or any evidence. Michael Kurfin lived with Case during that time and was listed as a person of interest to police. Police said Kurfin’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Officials said the skull and other remains will be taken to the State of Utah Medical Examiner’s Office for identification. http://fox13now.com/2017/05/22/human-remai...rk-woman-lived/ |

http://www.sltrib.com/news/5319196-155/hum...uried-in-cellar Human remains found buried in cellar at Utah home By MARIAH NOBLE | The Salt Lake Tribune First Published May 22 2017 04:30PM • Updated 7 hours ago Crime » Police believe the remains may belong to a woman reported missing in 1988. Facebook Twitter Google+ Pinterest Email Print Share This Article Police believe human remains found in the back yard of a Spanish Fork home Monday may help solve a 1988 missing-persons case. A resident was removing items from a cement cellar on the property, at 80 North and 800 East, and noticed the soil was sinking in one area of the dirt floor, according to a Spanish Fork Police Department news release. The resident "became suspicious" about what was causing the sinking soil because he'd heard a former resident of the home was reported missing several years earlier and never found. The man and a friend dug down into the dirt floor about 18 inches and located what appeared to be a human skull, the release said. The skull was wrapped in a blanket and plastic mesh, the release said, and the two men called police about 10:15 a.m. In 1988, Peggy Sue Case, also known as Peggy Sue Ellsworth, and her boyfriend Michael I. Kufrin lived at the address where the remains were found Monday. Kufrin was identified in the Monday news release as a "person of interest" in Case's disappearance. Case was last seen at a hot-tub party she and Kufrin attended July 9, 1988 in Payson, former Spanish Fork police Detective Carl Johnston told The Tribune in the past. She allegedly was flirting with some of the men at the party, and witnesses reported certain hostility between her and Kufrin, police said, but the couple left the party together. After the party, Kufrin called Case's workplace to report her ill. The next day, he told Case's employers she had gone out of town to buy a car, according to a previous Tribune story. Coworkers contacted police on July 15, 1988, the release said, apparently suspicious of what they perceived as atypical behavior for Case, Johnston said. For a time, Kufrin claimed Case was staying in contact with him by phone, but he later stopped discussing the case with police. Despite "extensively" investigating Case's disappearance, including digging through the cellar soil in 1988, police were unsuccessful in locating any evidence, the Monday news release said. Kufrin was arrested in October 1988 in an unrelated attempted-theft case and served five years in Utah State Prison. During his incarceration, Kufrin refused to discuss the case with the Utah Board of Pardons. After his release, Kufrin moved back to his home state of Illinois. Every year, Johnston would call Kufrin's mother to ask if she had learned anything about the case, but she never did. He would also call Kufrin every year — and typically, after he introduced himself, Kufrin would hang up, the retired detective said. Johnston, who attended one of the parole hearings, said it was "frustrating having everything you need except her," according to a newspaper story about the hearing. Case's Utah County family had a burial plot set aside for their daughter, Johnston said. On Monday, Johnston said that if the newly found remains turn out to be Case's, "that's a great thing for her family to have some closure." Case's body would "add some new light on some of the elements" already discovered by police, Johnston said, and police may be able to move the case forward. Kufrin's current whereabouts were unknown Monday afternoon, the release said, and Lt. Matt Johnson said police are not asking for help from the public in locating Kufrin at this time. The remains are being turned over to the medical examiner's office, where examiners will attempt to identify the remains, the release said. The police's investigation is ongoing, the release said. |

May Peggy Rest in Peace ![]() http://fox13now.com/2017/05/24/remains-fou...ing-since-1988/ Remains found in Spanish Fork ID’d as Peggy Sue Case, missing since 1988 POSTED 4:34 PM, MAY 24, 2017, BY DAVID WELLS, UPDATED AT 04:57PM, MAY 24, 2017 SPANISH FORK, Utah — The Utah State Office of the Medical Examiner has confirmed the identity of human remains that were discovered in a cellar in Spanish Fork earlier this week. The remains were identified as those of Peggy Sue Case, whom Spanish Fork police said was last seen on July 9, 1988. Case’s dental records were used to identify the remains. Police identified Michael Kufrin as a person of interest in her disappearance. According to a statement from Spanish Fork police, Kufrin was Case’s boyfriend at the time she disappeared. Spanish Fork police are reviewing evidence collected in 1988 and evidence obtained this week upon the discovery of the remains. Once the evidence has been reviewed and any new information is investigated, the statement said, facts of the case will be submitted to the Utah County Attorney’s Office, who will make a decision on how to proceed in this matter. The remains were discovered in a cement cellar in the backyard of the home where Case was living at the time of the disappearance. According to Spanish Fork police, the person who found them was in the process of moving out of the home. “The tenant who was moving out this morning was removing some items from the cement cellar in the backyard,” explained Lt. Matt Johnson with Spanish Fork Police. “He became somewhat curious and he and the individual with him decided to dig and remove some of the soil.” Lt. Johnson said the tenant first got the idea to dig after a neighbor had told him that a woman living in the home had gone missing back in 1988. “They dug down approximately 18 inches and found a human skull wrapped in a blanket,” Johnson said. Police said Case had been fighting with Kurfin and Case soon came up missing. In the days following the missing report, police said Kurfin became a person of interest and detectives began searching the property the couple shared together. “The detective at that time spent may many hours searching the residence, as well as the space beneath the residence and checked the cellar and removed some dirt from the cellar,” Lt. Johnson added. Watch FOX 13 News and fox13now.com for updates on this story. |
