BROOKSVILLE —Deep down inside, Kelly Carpenter always knew her stepfather was responsible for her mother's disappearance more than three decades ago. "I always thought he had done something to my mom, yes," she said Monday. Carpenter last saw her mother, Evelyn "Laverne" Mackey, 34 years ago this week. The mother made breakfast for her daughter, then a 14-year-old ninth grader at D.S. Parrott Middle School in Brooksville. Then Carpenter's stepfather, Merl Mackey, took her to school. Nobody ever say Laverne Mackey again. Merl Mackey told Carpenter and her brother their mother had gone to visit a relative. But after they didn't hear from her for weeks, family filed a missing person report with law enforcement in January 1982. After the case stagnated for decades, in September a Levy County grand jury indicted Merl Mackey, now 72, on a charge of first-degree murder. Then Hernando County sheriff's detectives and U.S. Marshals went to New Mexico on Oct. 24 to arrest him and bring him back to Florida. If convicted, Mackey will either face the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison. "I feel grateful that he's being held accountable," Carpenter said. The break in the case came after producers from TNT's Cold Justice began examining Laverne Mackey's disappearance. The show's findings gave detectives reason to visit Merl Mackey, who had moved to Chandler, Texas, about 90 minutes southeast of Dallas.
