Huntington Beach Man Accused of Cold Case Murder
Thursday, Apr 14, 2011 | Updated 9:26 AM PDT
Man Arrested in 1981 Cold Case
Robert Casillas, Daily Breeze

A Huntington Beach man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife 30 years ago.

Torrance police say Michael Clark was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of killing Carol Jeanne Lubahn, who was 28 when she went missing on April 8, 1981.

She was never found.

He's scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.

The couple were sweethearts at North High School in Torrance before getting married and having two children.

Torrance detective Jim Wallace tells the Daily Breeze that inconsistencies in Clark's statements over the years were, in part, what prompted his arrest but didn't provide details.

In an earlier interview with the newspaper, Clark said he and his wife had argued the night before her disappearance and when he woke up she was gone.

He reported her missing three days later.

There are those who knew the couple when they were dating, considered it a storybook courtship.

Michael Clark, Whose Wife Disappeared 30 Years Ago, Faces Trial for Her Murder

By Matt CokerFri., May 11 2012 at 1:46 PM

A Huntington Beach man has been ordered to stand trial for killing his wife in 1981 despite her body never being found.

Torrance Police in April arrested Michael Clark, 58, who changed his last name from Lubahn, for the cold-case murder of his wife Carol Jeanne Meyer Lubahn.

She was last heard from March 30, 1981, when she phoned her mother to say she was upset over the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

Carol Jeanne Meyer Lubahn

Clark told family members his wife of 10 years, and mother of their son and daughter, left home in the middle of the night after an argument over selling their Torrance house.

But Torrance Police have said his arrest is based on that explanation changing over the past 30 years.

Detectives believe he killed her because she had been in a love affair.

Clark, who is being held on $1 million bail, is due back in Torrance Superior Court May 24.
