http://www.thetowntalk.com/html/5AD44C92-B...CF5986AE1.shtml Could 1998 Rapides murder case be connected to serial killings? Mandy M. Goodnight / The Town Talk Posted on June 6, 2003 Submitted Photo These images are from the facial reconstruction of "Jane Doe," whose body was dumped along I-49 near Lena in 1998. Investigators are trying to determine if the death of the victim, who has never been identified, is connected to the South Louisiana serial killings. Rapides Parish sheriff's detectives want to find out whether the alleged South Louisiana serial killer holds the answer to a 5-year-old murder mystery. Investigators are going to look into the possibility that Derrick Todd Lee is responsible for the death of a woman whose body was dumped along Interstate 49 near Lena in 1998, Maj. Herman Walters said Thursday. Walters said the nude body of the still-unidentified woman was dumped where truck drivers typically park to rest. Information gathered from bankruptcy records indicated that Lee worked as a truck driver at one time. "It is a shot in the dark, but we are going to look into the possibility," Walters said. Lee was arrested May 27 in Atlanta, Ga., on suspicion of killing at least five women in the Baton Rouge area and Lafayette. He has been charged in connection with four deaths in Baton Rouge, and charges are pending from Lafayette Parish. DNA evidence has linked him to all five deaths, investigators say. Walters said he knows a number of various state agencies are checking their unsolved crimes to see if there is any connection to Lee. In West and East Feliciana parishes, investigators dug around and broke up slabs of concrete that were poured by Lee when he worked for a concrete company. None of the digs have uncovered any human remains. Walters said it is investigators' obligation to solve the 1998 murder case and follow up on any leads that might turn up an arrest. "We are doing just that," he said. "We want to close out this case." The victim, labeled Jane Doe, was found April 12, 1998, about 30 feet from the shoulder of the southbound on-ramp at the I-49 Lena exit. Investigators have yet to identify the body despite a number of people volunteering their bone marrow to see if she was a missing relative. Not only does her name remain a mystery, so does her cause of death. Jane Doe was badly decomposed when she was found by a man collecting aluminum cans. Investigators speculated her body had been there two to three weeks. Walters said there were no clues left at the scene other than the body. The case has been treated as a homicide. The body is that of a white woman, estimated to be 35 to 43 years old; 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall; and between 110 and 140 pounds. She appeared to have shoulder-length, blond hair. A purple ribbon was found in her hair, but she wore no watches or jewelry. There were no visible scars or tattoos. Investigators said there were signs of old injuries to her nose, forehead and below the right eye. She also had some unique dental work. Walters said investigators were able to put together a reconstruction of what she might have looked like. The images of the reconstructed facial model were passed out nationwide to law enforcement agencies in hopes someone might recognize her. Walters said each time a serial killer or murder suspect was arrested anywhere, detectives would check to see if there was possibly a link to the 1998 Jane Doe case. "We have tried every different avenues that have come up," he said. Walters said "cold cases" involving homicides are never closed and are subject to be reopened any time there is a new lead. Detective Steve Kartsimas has worked on the case from the beginning. He has speculated that a truck driver might have been involved due to where the body was found. Walters said investigators will contact the serial killer task force in Baton Rouge for information on Lee's truck-driving job. Investigators said they want to know for whom Lee worked and what routes he drove, especially if any went through I-49 about the time Jane Doe was killed. Walters said Jane Doe could have been from almost anywhere since she was found along the interstate. He said investigators want to know who she is, what happened to her and who is responsible. "This is a cold case that we have not given up on," he said. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Mandy M. Goodnight: 487-6465; mgoodnight@thetowntalk.com |

http://thetowntalk.com/html/F10F9098-A7FD-...8E8D7AEB3.shtml Tip received in 'Jane Doe' case Posted on June 7, 2003 File Photo "Jane Doe": facial reconstruction shows what victim might have looked like. Rapides Parish sheriff's detectives caught a possible break Friday in their 5-year-old murder mystery. Detectives said they received a tip in the "Jane Doe" case and are checking on the information received. "It is a promising bit of information," said Detective Steve Kartismas. Detectives would not release specific details on the information provided. Investigators have worked since April 1998 to try to identify a woman, labeled "Jane Doe," whose nude body was found on Interstate 49 near Lena. Maj. Herman Walters said they received the possible lead Friday morning. The caller, who was not identified, told them of seeing suspicious activity involving a woman and truck driver at the southbound Lena exit. Jane Doe's body was found on the southbound on-ramp at the exit about 30 feet from the road, detectives said. It is unknown why the caller decided to come forward now with information and not back in 1998. On Thursday, detectives said they were contacting the serial killer task force to see if there was a possible connection between the 1998 victim and Derrick Todd Lee, the alleged south Louisiana serial killer. Lee was arrested in connection with the deaths of four women in Baton Rouge, and charges are pending in a fifth slaying in Lafayette. The five deaths were linked through DNA evidence to one suspect. Lee, 34, worked as a truck driver, according to bankruptcy reports. Detectives want to know what company he worked for and what route he drove, especially if he drove I-49. Kartismas said investigators have suspected that a truck driver could be responsible for Jane Doe's death. Her body was left in an area that is often used by I-49 truckers as an unofficial overnight rest stop. On Friday, Kartismas said he had phoned the task force and is waiting to get some information back from the task force. He said detectives are actively following up on both potential leads in the case. A man picking up aluminum cans along the interstate found Jane Doe on April 12, 1998. The body was nude and badly decomposed. Jane Doe was wearing no watches or jewelry and had no scars or tattoos. She was wearing a purple ribbon in her blond hair. There were signs of old injuries to the bones of her nose, forehead and below the right eye. She also had some unique dental work. It appeared her body had been on the side of the road about two to three weeks. Scientists were unable to identify her using fingerprints or dental records. A facial reconstruction was made to show what she might have looked like. Investigators sent fliers out nationwide but had no luck. Jane Doe's cause of death also remains a mystery. However, investigators are treating it as a homicide. Jane Doe is a white female, between 35 and 43 years old, 5 feet 5 and 5 feet 8 inches tall and 110-140 pounds. Since her body was found, Kartismas has been on the case. He said the case file has sat on the right side of his desk for five years. Every once in a while, he would open the file and see if he had missed anything or if something stood out. He checked on numerous homicide arrests to see if there was a link between them and the Jane Doe case. Kartismas said it had been a long time since his phone rang in regards to Jane Doe. Like any unsolved case, Kartismas said it "nags at you." He is not going to give up on it. "We want to find out who she is and what happened to her," he said. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call (318) 473-6700 or 473-6727. Mandy M. Goodnight: 487-6465 |

http://www.thetowntalk.com/html/AB3AA76A-8...0051B1286.shtml Truck tip could help identify Jane Doe Mandy M. Goodnight / The Town Talk Posted on June 16, 2003 Rapides Parish sheriff's detectives are hoping a Tennessee trucking company might hold the key to a murder mystery. Detective Steve Kartismas said he is attempting to identify a truck that possibly was connected to the death of a woman known only as Jane Doe in April 1998. The information about the truck came from a tip the department received recently. It was the first tip received in the case in several years, Kartismas said. Jane Doe's nude body was found along the side of Interstate 49 near Lena. Her identity and cause of death remain a mystery. Kartismas said investigators also are continuing to check into the possibility the suspected south Louisiana serial killer is linked to Jane Doe's death. Derrick Todd Lee was arrested in Atlanta recently on suspicion of murdering five women in Baton Rouge and Lafayette. According to bankruptcy reports, Lee was a truck driver. Kartismas said he is waiting on information from the serial killer task force to see if Lee is possibly connected to Jane Doe. He also is continuing to wait for responses from Tennessee officials. He said the trucking company identified by the tipster might be located in Tennessee. The tipster told detectives he had seen suspicious activity at the southbound Lena exit involving a woman and truck driver. Jane Doe's body was found at that particular exit about 30 feet from the road shoulder. Kartismas said the tipster didn't think anything about it at the time, and Jane Doe's body was not found for another two to three weeks. Jane Doe was wearing only a purple ribbon in her hair. She had no tattoos, scars or jewelry. She was blond, between 35 and 43 years old, 110-140 pounds and 5-feet-5 to 5-feet-8 inches tall. The woman does have unique dental work, Kartismas said. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 473-6700. Mandy M. Goodnight: 487-6465 |
