There may be a break in a nine-year-old missing person's case here in the Wiregrass.

At this time the FBI is being extremely tight-lipped in regard to what, if anything was found in a two-acre sinkhole near Ponce De Leon.

In fact over the next several days the FBI divers will scour every inch of the sinkhole located on private property which is near the Holmes-Walton County line off Highway 90.

Recently, Opp police received a credible tip indicating that Kemberly's body was here. The 17-year-old Opp High School student was last seen at her father's Opp home in August, 1997.

Cadaver dogs from as far away as Baltimore, Maryland have been brought in to try and detect a scent. And an FBI spokesman at their mobile office tells the media that they'll try and release any information as soon as possible.

The search lasted three days and turned up no clues relating to Ramer's case. In 2001, a non-profit group in Texas searched Baptism Hole with cadaver dogs and got several hits. They dug up an engine block with a rope tied to it, but had to leave the site before they could excavate it completely. The next day the FBI brought in its own dogs, which gave no indication of smelling human remains, so there were no more searches conducted in that area.

Authorities Search Florida Sinkhole for Missing Opp Teen

A dive team is searching a sink hole near Ponce de Leon, Florida, for an Opp teenager who disappeared nine years ago from her father's home.

Authorities are following up on a tip from an anonymous caller claiming to know the location of Kemberly Ramer's body.

No remains were recovered Tuesday evening when the search ended for the day. The operation will resume Wednesday at the sinkhole, which is about 300 feet wide and 55 feet deep.

F-B-I agent Alan Ducote says the caller contacted the Opp Police Department in April and gave directions to the sinkhole. The caller then hung up.

Cadaver dogs investigated the area Tuesday morning before a team of 10 divers began searching the site at 11 a-m. Ducote says the area will probably be searched for two to three days.

The search didn't begin until July because that was the earliest authorities could bring a dive team to the area.

Ramer disappeared from her father's home on August 15th, 1997. Earlier in the day, the 17-year-old had played softball and spent time with friends before returning home.

Search for Opp teen ends without findings, new leads received

MONTGOMERY, Ala. The search of a sink hole near Ponce de Leon, Florida, for a missing Opp teenager has ended without any findings, but the media coverage spurred people to call in with new leads in the nine-year-old case.

That's according to Alan Ducote, an F-B-I agent with the bureau's Mobile office.

Authorities ended the search around 1 p-m. today. Divers spent a total of 35 hours searching the sink hole for Kemberly Ramer's remains.

Since the search began Tuesday, Ducote says several people have called with leads in the case that - quote -- "we were never aware of before."

He described the leads as "promising."

Ducote declined to elaborate on the new leads, but credited media coverage of the search for generating new interest in the case.

Authorities searched the sink hole, which is about 300 feet wide and 55 feet deep, following a tip from an anonymous caller to the Opp Police Department.

Ramer disappeared from her father's home on August 15th, 1997. Earlier in the day, the 17-year-old had played softball and spent time with friends before returning home.

Still Missing After Eleven Years Later Printer Friendly Version Reported by: Ken Curtis
Friday, Aug 15, 2008 @04:00pm CDT

It's been eleven years since Kimberly Ramer was last seen, eleven long years for her family in Opp. "That Thursday before she (Kimberly) disappeared (kn 1998) on Friday I went over to have lunch with her," said her mother in a 2004 interview with WDHN. Little did Sue Ramer know, that would be the last time she would see her daughter.

Kimberly, active in sports, had left a softball game and was headed home to change clothes before meeting friends. "The most puzzling aspect of this case would be she just totally disappeared," said Opp Assistant Police Chief Mike McDonald. He and Mrs. Ramer talked with News 18 on the seventh anniversary of Kimberly's disappearance and not much has changed since. Divers did search a pond near Bonifay, FL. less than two years ago but, again, the investigation came up empty. "It's just like this young lady disappeared off the face of the earth," McDonald said.

"I wasn't afraid of her disappearing...that was (far) from my mind," said Sue Ramer. She added "Who would ever think something like that would happen in a small town?" While there is always a flicker of hope burning, Sue Ramer is not optimistic. "I wish I could have that hope but the information that is given to me, I don't have that hope," she said.

The subject of local and national media coverage, Kimberly Ramer's disappearance may never be solved. It's even more certain Kimberly is dead, something her mother still copes to accept. "(I have) faith in God that, one day, the truth will come

OPD: No new leads in Ramer case

For the past 15 years, the Opp community has been searching for answers – answers to what happened to a young girl about to embark on her senior year of high school.

The then-17-year-old Kemberly Ramer was last seen Aug. 15, 1997, around 11 p.m., leaving her boyfriend’s residence in Opp to return home, which was about five minutes away.

Then-police chief Johnny Ray Metcalf told The Star-News then that Ramer was last seen Fri., Aug. 15, 1997, between 11 and 11:45 p.m., and a missing persons report was filed at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

According to Star-News’ archives, Kenneth Ramer said his daughter’s car arrived at their home at approximately midnight.

Kem Ramer“We have no clue where she is,” Kenneth Ramer said in 1997. “It was around midnight when she got here. I’ve called everyone – friends, relatives, anybody who could have seen her or might know where she is – no one knows anything.”

The case even garnered attention from then-Gov. Fob James, who put up a $5,000 reward for information relating to Ramer’s disappearance.

The case remains unsolved, despite, numerous tips, leads and searches over the years, including searching a lake, baptism hole, and sinkhole near Ponce de Leon, Fla., all of which yielded nothing.

Opp Police Department Assistant Chief Mike McDonald said they haven’t had any leads to date this year.

“I’m not aware of the FBI getting any either,” he said. “They tend to come through us and we pass them along. “They are few and far between, and you have to determine which ones are credible. Sometimes we get info that we’ve already checked out,” he said. “But we haven’t given up hope. We hope that sometime we will get closure for the friends and family. It’s still a work in progress.”

The case garnered more national attention last March, when it was shown by CNN’s Nancy Grace, which highlighted several other missing children.

Ramer would now be 32 years old. When she was last seen she had brown hair and brown eyes, was 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. She had clear braces on her teeth and had thick eyebrows.

Anyone with any information can call the OPD at 493-4511 or the FBI at 202-324-3000.
