Cold Case: Bones Found Near Frederick POSTED: 4:40 pm EDT May 11, 2005 UPDATED: 6:52 am EDT May 12, 2005 FREDERICK, Md. -- It has been almost 23 years since the skeletal remains of a woman were found in the woods on a mountain near Frederick, Md. Investigators don't know how she died, where she died, or who she is. But they've recently received some tantalizing leads, and they're looking for help to close this cold case. Bones Found Near Frederick The bones were found in an area known as the Frederick Municipal Forest. Back in 1982, it was known as the Frederick City Watershed because all the water that falls in the mountains drains into the city's reservoir. Back in '82, in the heat of the summer in August, a man and a woman were up there looking for mushrooms and they made a horrible discovery. "They came upon this trunk and what they found inside were the remains of the victim that were literally melted because of the heat," Lt. Tom Chase said. As a consequence, detectives don't know who she was. Three forensic anthropologists have produced artists' conceptions of what she might have looked like. Forensic dentists have produced a dental chart that indicates she had work done at a dental school. "According to these dentists, the type of dental work that she had done, they aren't done as frequently in the practice of dentistry, but they are still taught to people who are going to practice dentistry," Chase said. Investigators do not believe she is from the Frederick area. "We believe that if she was from Frederick, we would have been able to identify her a long time ago," Chase said. But now, perhaps, there has been a break. "I had a conversation with a detective from Roanoke, Va.," Chase said. He got a call about Virginian Alice Welch, who has been missing from Roanoke since August of 1982. "At this time, the possibility of us having located this person, I think, is as good as it's ever been over the course of this investigation," Chase said. He said the time frame, the height, the weight, and the appearances all match up. "If you look at the three likenesses that you have and the photograph of the victim from Roanoke as posted on the Web page, the same similarities of her facial features are on the picture, are, in my opinion, very consistent with those similarities with those features existing on these artist renderings," Chase said. The similarities were first noticed by the Maryland Doe Network -- a group of volunteers who research missing persons cases. "And in this instance, if this turns out to be the victim, it will be directly as a result of the efforts of the Doe Network," Chase said. But, as of today, detectives do not know for sure who this woman is. "Finding out exactly who she is, is when the work really begins because that's the first lead that you have to interviewing people she knows, interviewing relatives, interviewing people from her life. That obviously gives us leads to determine how she died," Chase said. And the Doe Network continues to play an important role in this case. Police in Frederick are also looking at the possibility that another missing woman may be the victim in this case. Her case is also posted on the Doe Network Web site. She is Judith Ann Chartier, who has been missing from Chelmsford, Mass., since June of 1982. The Maryland Missing Persons Network is online at MarylandMissing.com. And if you have any information that can help investigators solve this case, they ask that you call the Frederick City Police Department at (301) 694-2100. http://www.nbc4.com/news/4477935/detail.html |

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-21...o=feeds-newsxml Police release new sketch of mysterious 'cheerleader in the trunk' 30 YEARS after grisly murder By Snejana Farberov PUBLISHED: 22:37 EST, 3 June 2012 | UPDATED: 00:11 EST, 4 June 2012 Police released a new sketch of a young woman whose badly decomposing body was found inside a steamer trunk nearly three decades ago in Frederick, Maryland. The latest digital image of the victim, commonly known as ‘the woman in the trunk,’ was made public by the Frederick Police Department on Friday ahead of the upcoming 30th anniversary of the cold case. ‘We felt now was the time to get a separate version of what she may have looked like,’ Lieutenant Clark Pennington told WTOP. It is one of three sketches drawn since the body was found. A sketch released in the 1980s depicts a woman with thick eyebrows, wide eyes and heavy bangs. Another drawing released in the early 1990s shows a woman with short hair, thin lips and a slightly wrinkled brow. Those images are posted on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's website. Pennington said the latest image will be added to the National Unidentified Persons System - a database designed to help law enforcement agencies with cases that involve unidentified human remains. Several months ago, the police department asked Sergeant Don Stahl, of the Charles County Sheriff's Office, to assist in the victim's facial reconstruction. Stahl’s version of ‘the woman in the trunk’ features a woman with a thin face, long hair and a curved nose. Stahl said a photo of the woman's skull helped him create the image, but the police department also played a part in the process. Investigators asked the expert to draw the woman with her hair in a ponytail because it is likely that she was a cheerleader, a dancer or a gymnast due signs of wear on her hip bones. ‘It's a gamble to make assumptions like that, but it's that kind of information that could spark recognition,’ Stahl said. He used an electronic tablet and Photoshop to create the image. The new sketch depicts a woman with a thin face, long hair and a curved nose Detectives hope Stahl’s latest image sheds new light on the case, Pennington said. On August 24, 1982, a couple of hikers searching for mushrooms in the Frederick City Watershed spotted a steamer trunk off the road. They called police, and when officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a badly decomposed body inside. Detectives said the trunk contained skeletal remains of a petite Caucasian female with dark hair between the ages of 18 and 25 with a medium build. Investigators were hoping at the time that the victim’s dental records would help identify her since she had had extensive work done on her teeth. Images of the woman’s teeth were put into an online database in an effort to help solve the case. 'The hope first off is closure for the family,’ Pennington told Your4State. 'This woman has to be missed by somebody, so somebody is out there looking for her.’ The Frederick Police Department currently has at least 11 open homicide investigations, according to the agency's website.

http://www.hlntv.com/article/2012/06/05/who-lady-trunk Who is the lady in the trunk?By Stephen Loiaconi updated 11:31 AM EDT, Tue June 05, 2012NEED TO KNOW•Unidentified woman's body found in trunk on side of road •Police hope new sketch will solve 30-year-old mystery Thirty years ago, she was found dead in a steamer trunk on the side of the road. The trunk was discovered by a couple looking for mushrooms near the Frederick, Maryland, City Watershed on August 24, 1982, according to police. Inside were the remains of a white woman with dark hair, believed to be 18-25 years old, who has never been identified. Over the years, Frederick police have pursued hundreds of leads in the homicide investigation, and now they are reaching out to the public with a new sketch that they hope will reignite interest in the case. The latest sketch was drawn by Sgt. Don Stahl of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. According to a police press release, Stahl specializes in forensic reconstruction of skeletal remains, and he was able to create a digital image of what the victim might have looked like when her body was first found. The Frederick News-Post reported that police asked him to draw the woman with a ponytail because investigators believe she was athletic. “It’s a gamble to make assumptions like that, but it’s that kind of information that could spark recognition,” Stahl told the paper. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and experts at the Smithsonian studied the remains during the original investigation in a failed effort to identify the woman. According to Frederick police, the examinations uncovered evidence of extensive dental procedures consistent with those performed by dental students. Police have previously released two other sketches of the woman, including one posted on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website, but they believe Stahl’s sketch could generate new leads as the anniversary of the discovery of the body approaches. Anyone with information is asked to contact Frederick Police Dept. Det. Curt Lege at 301-600-3918 or leave an anonymous tip at 301-600-TIPS. FREDERICK, MD - Police in Frederick have reopened an almost 30-year-old cold case. The challenge? They never identified the victim who was found badly decomposed in a trunk. Now a new generation of detectives hopes to bring some justice to "Jane Doe". Two hikers made a gruesome discovery at the Frederick City Watershed almost 30 years ago. They stumbled upon a steamer trunk and found a skeletonized body inside. In 1982, detectives determined the victim was a white woman in her late teens to early 20's, about 5'4 with a medium build. She's never been identified and is known as "The woman in the trunk". However, now police are hard at work, breathing new life into the cold case. "Even though they may be considered cold by society's standards, they're not cold for our standards," says Lt. Clark Pennington of the Frederick City Police. An artist drew a sketch in the 1980's, but now a different artist will make a digital one. "I've contacted the old artist. I've contacted the old detectives, just trying to update and if it there's something they missed," says Curt Lege, a Frederick City Police detective. Police also entered her teeth into an online database and are reexamining stacks of her case files. They believe her teeth may crack the case because of the amount of dental work. Police think she may have been a dancer or gymnast due to some wear on her hipbones. "The hope first off is closure for the family. This woman has to be missed by somebody, so somebody is out there looking for her. This victim has a family, so we want to fully investigate this crime, identify who she is, and be able to provide some closure for the family," says Lt. Pennington. "That's what we're hoping that we do and we give somebody that hope and they come forward and give us the information that'll hopefully identify this person," says Lege. Police hope a fresh set of eyes will help them solve the case of the "woman in the trunk" found almost three decades ago. The new sketch is expected to be completed within a month. This case has appeared on several national forensic science shows, such as "The New Detectives" and "Final Justice http://your4state.com/fulltext?nxd_id=237392 |
