New theories in 1982 Tahoe murder could solve cold case Marcella Corona, RGJ 1:06 p.m. PDT July 21, 2015 -REN Cold case 01.jpg_20150721.jpg (Photo: Washoe County Sheriff's Office) A pair of yellow shoes, preserved DNA evidence and a new sketch may help investigators identify a 25 to 35-year-old woman who was killed 33 years ago near Lake Tahoe. The woman, previously believed to be European, is now thought to have lived on the West Coast after medical experts re-examined her dental work, inoculation scar and her clothing, Dave Jenkins, an investigator with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit, said on Tuesday. On July 17, 1982, deputies found a woman killed near a popular hiking trail in the Sheep’s Flat area just off of Mt. Rose Highway. She was a few miles above Incline Village on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. The woman wore a powder blue T-shirt, “Lee” brand denim blue jeans and yellow tennis shoes size 6 and a half. She also wore a light blue, one-piece bathing suit under her clothing. She had no identification or other properties with her, Jenkins said. -REN Cold case 03.jpg_20150721.jpg A photo of a one-piece bathing suit a woman was found wearing after she was shot several times in the back on July 17, 1982, just a few miles near Incline Village. Investigators believe she was either en rout to or from Lake Tahoe when she was killed. (Photo: Washoe County Sheriff's Office) She was Caucasian with a medium colored complexion; 5’5” to 5’6” tall; slender build; straight medium length light brown hair and hazel eyes. She also had a vaccination scar on her right shoulder and a 4 to 5 inch scar on her lower abdomen from a C-section operation. Authorities believed she was either on her way to or from the lake, when she was sexually assaulted and then shot several times in the back. “Her teeth looked like they were in disrepair for a couple of years before her murder,” Jenkins said. “We have exhaustively looked at every report for a missing person,” he said. “Now, we’d like to exploit the possibility that someone will recognize this woman. We have a new artist rendering with a very good likeness of her.” Her T-shirt, made by Funtees based in North Carolina, was sold only in the west coast. That included retail outlets in California, Oregon and Washington. Her shoes are unique and made it difficult for investigators to trace to a manufacturer. “We know that on the inside of the shoe, there is an imprint that says, ‘Made in Korea,’” Jenkins said. -REN Cold case 02.jpg_20150721.jpg A photo showing a woman's tennis shoe after she was found shot to death on July 17, 1982, just a few miles near Incline Village. Investigators believe she may have either been en route to or from Lake Tahoe when she was killed. (Photo: Washoe County Sheriff's Office) A re-evaluation of her teeth also indicated that she was likely American and not European, Jenkins said. At that time, investigators couldn’t examine DNA evidence, but that DNA was also preserved. “We have DNA evidence that would identify the suspect in this case,” Jenkins said. “We’re hoping that in identifying the victim, it will get us one step closer to finding the suspect.” The case is featured as the sheriff’s office Facebook page’s “Cold Case of the Month” for July. “We want to appeal to those people who may have had an associate or distant family member who went missing and was never seen again,” Jenkins said. “We want to widen our net through social media. YOUR HELP NEEDED WITH THIS MONTH’S COLD CASE. Investigators with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit are... Posted by Washoe County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 “We eliminated thousands and thousands of missing person’s reports,” he said. “And after more than 30 years of looking at that avenue, we never looked at those people who may have been voluntarily estranged or separated from their families.” Anyone with information is asked to contact investigator Dave Jenkins at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit at djenkins@washoecounty.us.
