Trail Goes Cold For Investigators In 1998 Missing Person Case BY RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor Journal & Topics Newspapers | 0 comments

Police investigators remain stumped almost 14 years later as to the whereabouts of a Palatine man who suddenly vanished.

According to Sgt. Dave Daigle, police received a call on Nov. 6, 1998 that Anthony Klama, a maintenance worker and resident at the Fox Fire apartment complex near Rand and Hicks roads, was missing.

Daigle said Klama was also a night watchman and called police on several occasions for a variety of reasons on his cordless phone.

“We did the investigation and it revealed he left his house the evening before and went to nearby Splinters Sports Pub,” Daigle said. “According to witnesses, he was hanging out with an unknown male, took money out (from an ATM) and left with the male subject.”

Daigle said Klama exited with his keys, wallet and cordless phone but left his car behind.

According to Daigle, two calls were made to Klama's cordless phone that night – one from a payphone at the Shell gas station at Lake-Cook and Rand roads and one from a payphone outside Jewel food store at Hicks and Dundee. Investigators were not able to obtain any video footage of those calls being made.

Daigle said Klama, who was 36 at the time and a known heavy drinker, was single with no children but had a big family and always spoke to someone everyday.

“Back in 2007, we went ahead and collected DNA from his mom and dad and submitted it to the FBI so we will have a profile if we ever need to identify him in the future,” Daigle said. “We interviewed everyone he knows. He didn’t have any credit cards and was just not the type of person to pack up and leave.”

Daigle said if police had video or phone records from that night, it would have given them a starting point. He said Klama had no known enemies.

“We searched the forest preserve and also Deer Grove but we never developed a suspect,” Daigle added. “We did a polygraph and everything but we just got stymied.”

Police are asking anyone that may have information on this case to contact them immediately.
