Police work to identify body found near Glenwood

GLENWOOD - Human remains found in a ditch west of Glenwood Saturday morning have been identified as female, the Mills County Sheriff's Office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said Tuesday.

"The female had brown hair, tied in a ponytail," a press release issued by the Mills County Sheriff's Office stated. "The female body also had a tattoo of a red rose on the right calf."

Tests to confirm race, stature and age are currently underway. The report states there is no time frame available for the results of those examinations.

"I don't think (the State Medical Examiner's Office) is comfortable being able to give a size or weight," Mills County Sheriff Mack Taylor said. "They're waiting for an anthropologist to do that, somebody who's more attuned to looking at skeletal remains."

The state of decomposition has led investigators to believe the body had been in the area approximately two to six weeks.

Taylor said the fact that the description thus far does not match any missing Mills County women does not mean the woman is not from the area.

"What we're going to do is get a weight and size and go back and look again to see who we've got. Obviously, we know it's a female, so we can discount the missing males," he said.

Besides the hair color and tattoomarkings, authorities know that the woman was wearing size five "Union Bay" jeans, an extra large "Southpole" brand mesh jersey tank top dark in color and size seven white "Spalding" tennis shoes.

Two crucifix necklaces, one of which contained five diamonds, were also found on the body. Officials involved with the investigation are not speculating about the significance of the stones in the necklace. "I guess we could jump to the conclusion that foul play was involved, but that would not be a sure, 100 percent conclusion," Taylor said.

"The person could have been walking down the road drunk, had a heart attack, rolled down the hill and ended up there. If there was foul play, maybe the perpetrator wouldn't know (the crucifix) had diamonds in it - maybe they had a motive. We try real hard not to jump to conclusions."

Taylor is hoping questions about the cause of death and other physical characteristics of the woman can be answered following forensic testing. For now Taylor and Terry Klooster, DCI special agent in charge, are asking that anyone with information contact the Mills County Sheriff's Office at (712) 527-4337 or the Iowa DCI at (712) 322-1585.

Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning has said the body found in Mills County is not that of Jessica O'Grady, a 19 year-old UNO student who has been missing since May 10.

"(Jessica) had some identifying marks that were not present on the body they found," he said. Dunning said his office has no other missing persons it is looking for.

Human remains found near Glenwood are female

GLENWOOD (AP) -- Human remains found in a ditch in southwest Iowa belonged to a woman, investigators said.

The woman had brown hair, tied in a ponytail and a rose tattoo on her right calf, officials with the Mills County sheriff's office said in a statement.

Tests were continuing to determine the race, stature and age of the person, officials said.

Sheriff Mack Taylor said the state medical examiner's office was using an anthropologist to help identify the remains.

Taylor said the body appears to have been in the area for two to six weeks.

The woman also was wearing size five "Union Bay" jeans, an extra large "Southpole" brand mesh jersey tank top and size seven white "Spalding" tennis shoes.

Two crucifix necklaces also were found on the body. One contained five diamonds.

Taylor said he hopes forensic testing can answer questions which will help authorities identify the woman.

He also said investigators had not yet determined whether foul play was involved.

The remains were found Saturday west of Glenwood. They were discovered north of a house after a family dog brought a bone up to the house, Taylor said.
