http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/meehan_patricia.html![]() Sunday, September 02, 1990 Northwest Briefly Is She Or Isn't She Patricia Meehan? Times Staff: Times News Services A transient arrested for littering remained in jail yesterday while a key witness says she probably is not a Montana woman who disappeared last year after walking away from an automobile accident. Police have been unable to determine whether the woman who identified herself as Morning Star is Patricia Meehan, 37, who vanished after walking away from a car crash near Circle, Mont., on April 20, 1989. Relatives fear she is suffering from amnesia. Officer Steve Koskimaki spotted the woman in a restaurant Thursday and was sure she was Meehan, whose photograph has been circulated widely in the Pacific Northwest. Koskimaki arrested her after she threw a newspaper on the street. However, Kurt Flechel of Spokane, a former longtime boyfriend of Meehan, told police Meehan is not the woman in custody, although ``there was a strong resemblance and the voice was similar,'' Lt. Don Jiran said. In an appearance Friday before Magistrate Neil Walter, the woman said she was a missionary for God and stopped in town en route from Seattle to Montana. ``I really think it's her. This woman is the spitting image of Meehan,'' said Lt. Greg Surplus. ``If this isn't her, then we've still got a missing person from somewhere.'' Missing woman cases stays unsolved Ex-boyfriend admits detainee was similar By Greg Lee Staff writer The Spokesman-Review September 1, 1990 COEUR d'ALENE -- It appears that a woman arrested Thursday for littering is not the one who disappeared in Montana 16 months ago. And if she is Patricia Meehan, the woman who walked away from a head-on traffic accident on April 20, 1989, authorities may never know. Morning Star, as the woman refers to herself, reportedly was released late Friday afternoon from the Kootenai County Jail after a magistrate dismissed a charge of littering in a court appearance, Coeur d'Alene Police Lt. Greg Surplus said. Although Surplus said she was released as a judge had ordered, jail officials would not confirm that. A former boyfriend of Meehan, meanwhile, continued to stand by his belief that the woman he visited in the jail Thursday night looked quite similar to his friend but wasn't her. "It's not Patty, I'm absolutely sure," said Kurt Flechel of Spokane, who dated Meehan for 4 1/2 years while they lived in Oklahoma City six years ago. "Patty's a definite redhead and this girl's hair is brown," Flechel said. "I've got to admit she's quite similar. When I first heard her voice my heart jumped. But there are some differences. This girl didn't have any freckles and Patty's arms are one big freckle." Surplus didn't agree with Flechel. "I really think it's her, this woman is the spittin' image of Meehan," Surplus said. "If this isn't her, then we've still got a missing person from somewhere." Fingerprints of Meehan were sent by facsimile to Surplus in hopes he could compare them with the mystery woman. But they were so poorly reproduced as to be useless, he said. Surplus was hoping the woman would be held at the jail on protective custody because of her mental state. He said a doctor examined the woman and advised that she be kept at the jail. But the court ordered that the woman be released. During the court appearance, the woman told Magistrate Neil Walter that she was falsely arrested Thursday. She said that Coeur d'Alene patrolman Steve Koskimaki told her to drop the newspaper she had in her hand. Moments later, she said, the police officer told her he could arrest her for littering. "When I asked him why he was detaining me, he said, 'I know what I'll charge you with, littering.'" When Walter asked the woman where she was from, she told the judge she was from Seattle and that she'd been a missionary for God for 11 years. She said she'd stopped in Coeur d'Alene on her way to Montana to look for a temporary part-time job. "But if the policemen are like this, I don't feel safe," the woman told the judge. Koskimaki went to Rax restaurant about 11:30 a.m. after Stacy Oldfield, an employee, noticed the woman and thought she was Meehan, a woman pictured in posters pinned up throughout the Pacific Northwest. Bob Jensen, a detective with the McCone County (Montana) Sheriff's Department who has been searching for Meehan, tried to reach Meehan's parents, who live in Pittsburgh. But the parents hadn't been contacted by late Friday. Family and friends have suspected Meehan may be suffering from amnesia caused by the accident. There have been thousands of reported sightings of her. When Koskimaki walked through the doors at Rax, he thought he was looking at Meehan, the woman he's seen in photographs circulated since her disappearance. The woman was wearing jeans and a sweater with three different shirts under the sweater, Koskimaki said, and was toting a backpack. "She didn't have any identification with her," Koskimaki said. "She had only $2 and some change. She looked weathered, like she'd been out in the sun a long time." (Attachment: "Morning Star") |

Mystery woman Police hold woman who resembles missing crash victim By Greg Lee Staff writer Spokane Chronicle August 31, 1990 COEUR d'ALENE -- Authorities were awaiting fingerprints today to see if a transient woman a city police officer arrested is the same woman who disappeared 16 months ago from the scene of a Montana traffic accident. Coeur d'Alene patrolman Steve Koskimaki arrested a woman Thursday who looked like Patricia Meehan, 37, who wandered away from a head-on collision near Circle, Mont., on April 20, 1989. Family and friends haven't seen her since the accident. Koskimaki went to Rax restaurant about 11:30 a.m. after Stacy Oldfield, an employee, noticed the woman and thought she was Meehan. But by 8 p.m. Thursday, authorities were sure that the unidentified woman was not Meehan after a former boyfriend, Kurt Flechel of Spokane, was brought over. "He said there was a strong resemblance and the voice was similar but unless she's had extensive dental surgery that there was no way that the woman was Patty," Coeur d'Alene Lt. Don Jiran said. But Bob Jensen, a Montana detective with the McCone County Sheriff's Department, isn't convinced. "We're still trying to reach her father by telephone and I'm planning on faxing a set of fingerprints in the morning," Jensen said after talking with Jiran. Meehan's family has suspected she may be suffering from amnesia caused by the accident. There have been thousands of sightings of her, including one last March in Coeur d'Alene. When Koskimaki walked through the doors at Rax, he thought he was looking at Meehan, the woman he's seen in photographs circulated since her disapperance. "I'd say it's her, definitely," Koskimaki said. "And if it's not her, then it's got to be a sister." Koskimaki arrested the woman on charges of littering when the woman tossed a newspaper on the street. She's being held on Kootenai County Jail on $300 bond. Jensen had been trying to contact Tom Meehan, the missing woman's father, who lives in Pittsburgh. But by mid-evening the detective had only reached Meehan's answering machine. Jensen was hoping that Tom Meehan could call the Kootenai County Jail and talk with the woman. "He has said that, if the opportunity like this ever came, he could tell whether the person was Patty or not by her voice," Jensen said. According to the detective, Patty Meehan has a mild East Coast accent. "She had an Eastern accent," Koskimaski said of the woman. The physical characteristics -- she's 5-foot-3 and 120 pounds or less, strawberry blond hair and green-gray eyes -- were the same, Koskimaki said. But she wouldn't answer to the name Patty Meehan, Koskimaki said. "She said her name is Morning Star, that she's from the East Coast and that she's a missionary from God," Koskimaki said. The woman was wearing jeans and a sweater with three different shirts under the sweater, Koskimaki said, and was toting a backpack. "She didn't have any identification with her," Koskimaki said. "She had only $2 and some change. She looked weathered, like she'd been out in the sun a long time." Jensen has received several reports that Meehan had been spotted as far east as Minnesota and as far west as Seattle. Several hundred tips were phoned in after a segment on her disappearance appeared on the television show "Unsolved Mysteries" on March 8, the detective said. Two hours after that show aired, a couple reported seeing her at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene. Jensen called the development Thursday "the best lead we've had for quite some time." |
