Mary Boyle's Family Appeal For Re-establishment Of Missing Persons Helpline
Tuesday 30th May 2006
Calls for the reestablishment of the National Missing Persons helpline have been supported by the family of Mary Boyle, the Donegal schoolgirl who went missing close to her grandparents home outside Ballyshannon in 1977.
Ann Doherty, Mary's twin sister, says the families of people who are missing should be allowed to avail of as much support as possible.
Little Mary Boyle from Kincasslagh was just six years old when she disappeared on the day after St. Patrick's Day near Cashelard outside Ballyshannon 29 years ago.
Her family have backed calls for the National Helpline Service which was first established in 2002 to be brought back. Funding for the service was pulled in 2003 when it only received 100 calls.
Speaking on Highland Radio, Ann Doherty said a helpline service for missing persons can only be a good thing.
"It would be very helpful if there was a number for someone to get in touch with," she said.
"We would, as a family, have hoped to have had a conclusion to our own case. We have gone through it for a number of years, it's hard to deal with and any help that's out there, should be available for people."

http://www.donegaldemocrat.com/story/6668
Ann Doherty said things had moved on quite a lot since her sister Mary's disappearance. "There is probably more help available now than when we went through it as a family," she added.
"But we had to deal with mostly everything on our own. There were plenty of people willing to help us but you really to have to go through it as a family on your own."

New Gardai Unit asked to investigate Mary Boyle case Oct 05, 2:11 pm
The mother of a Donegal girl who has been missing for over thirty years has expressed her hope that a new Garda cold case unit may be extended to examine missing persons cases.

Yesterday the Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy announced major changes in the way the force tackles serious crime and trains Gardaí to investigate it.

This includes the creation of a cold case unit which will investigate mysterious killings.

Mary Boyle hasn't been seen for over 30 years, and while her case is still treated as one of missing person, her mother Anne hopes new resources may still be applied to her disappearance.

Only for the support from her husband, Charlie, Ann would never have coped. Later Ann was to receive another fatal blow when Charlie died tragically in a fishing accident.

"It was Charlie's wish to know what happened to Mary before he died. Maybe Mary was a long time waiting for somebody to join her. Maybe she needed him more than I did."

Mary had a twin sister, also named Ann after her mother. Ann struggled through life without her soul mate.

Murders and missing persons: hundreds of unsolved cold cases
Mick McCaffrey

Print version Email to a friend

THERE are hundreds of unsolved investigations that the new cold-case unit could focus on. Highprofile murders and missing person cases are likely to be prioritised initially.

PHILIP CAIRNS

On 23 October 1986, 13-year-old Philip Cairns left his home at Ballyroan Road, Rathfarnham, to go back to school after lunch. He never made it. In the 20 years since Philip's disappearance his abductor, and probable murderer, has never been caught, despite massive resources being ploughed into the investigation.

Rumour and whispers have always dogged the case, with speculation that Philip was kidnapped by a religious cult or a group of paedophiles who had been abusing him. The fact is that nobody really knows what became of him. His schoolbag was found in a lane close to his house six days after he went missing, even though the lane had already been searched by gardai. It is suspected that somebody, possibly a child, found the bag elsewhere and left it in the lane but was afraid to come forward with vital information.

Gardai believe Philip is dead and the investigation will remain open until his remains are recovered.

SOPHIE TOSCAN DU PLANTIER

French film maker Sophie Toscan du Plantier fell in love with the remote countryside in Schull, west Cork, and bought a holiday home there. The 38year-old's life ended in tragedy when she was discovered battered to death on 23 December 1996.

A man living locally, freelance journalist Ian Bailey, was immediately identified as the prime suspect in the savage murder and was arrested but never charged with her killing. Bailey had a history of violence against women but a witness who placed him close to the murder scene withdrew her statement.

There are no obvious suspects, according to gardai, who believe that somebody living locally was responsible. The manner in which the investigation was conducted has already been the subject of a review by a team of gardai but the evidence is likely to be re-examined by the new cold-case unit.

RAONAID MURRAY

Raonaid Murray was 17 when she was stabbed to death after a night out on 4 September 1999. She left her friends at around 11.30pm and walked in the direction of her home in Glenageary. The student was seen by witnesses arguing with a man at 11.55pm and a local woman heard a scream soon afterwards.

Raonaid was stabbed four times with a oneand-a-half-inch knife in a lane close to her home.

The garda investigation of the murder has been one of the biggest in memory but it failed to trace her killer. There were half a dozen suspects but their alibis checked out and there has never been a breakthrough.

Gardai believe that a 'Noel Gallagher lookalike' seen around the area murdered Raonaid and possibly left the country on a ferry. Over 8,000 people were interviewed and over 3,000 statements were taken during the original investigation.

STEPHEN HUGHES-CONNORS

The unsolved killing of Stephen Hughes-Connors was one of the cases looked at when the new cold-case system was piloted 18 months ago. The review is still continuing; it has already resulted in one arrest and over 300 people have been reinterviewed.

Twelve-year-old Stephen was sleeping over with a friend in a hut made of wooden pallets and carpet when it was set on fire in the early hours of the morning on 1 September 2001. Stephen had told his parents he was staying at a friend's house. He didn't make it out of the "re although his friend managed to escape.

A man was captured on CCTV footage running away from the scene but he was never caught. A 45-year-old was detained for questioning in April 2006 but was released without charge. He was always regarded as the prime suspect. The case will be transferred to a larger team of gardai when the cold-case unit is up and running in a few months.

MARY BOYLE

Six-year-old Mary Boyle is officially the person who has been missing in Ireland for the longest time. She vanished from her grandparents' farm in Cahelard, near Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, on 18 March 1977. She had been following her uncle across a field but turned back and never reached home. Huge searches were immediately conducted around Donegal but the youngster never turned up and there were no positive sightings of her.

One suspect has been mentioned as possibly being involved in the Boyle case.

Fifty-nine-year-old Robert Black was questioned two years ago by the PSNI about the murder of a young girl in 1981. Nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy from Co Antrim disappeared as she cycled to a friend's house and her body was found six days later. Black is serving 10 life sentences for the murder of three young girls in the UK. Despite his links to Ireland around the time of Mary's disappearance there is nothing to tie Black to the crime and it remains unsolved 30 years on.

ANNIE MCCARRICK

During the 1990s six women simply disappeared without a trace, leaving detectives fearing they were dealing with a serial killer. None of these women has ever been found and it is thought that one man was behind at least four of the disappearances. The prime suspect, convicted rapist Larry Murphy, has never been linked to the crimes.

One of the best-known of Ireland's missing women is American Annie McCarrick, who disappeared in March 1993 after leaving her home in Sandymount. She was seen boarding a bus to Enniskerry. The 26-year-old was reportedly seen with a man near Johnny Fox's pub in Glencullen but this sighting has never been confirmed and no trace of Annie has ever been found.

Operation Trace was launched to reinvestigate the kidnappings but it was not successful. The cases of the other missing women . . . Jo Jo Dullard, Deirdre Jacob, Fiona Pender, Fiona Sinnott and Ciara Breen . . . are all likely to be reviewed as cold cases.

A search for the Republic’s longest missing person resumed yesterday, this time at a location close to where the little girl disappeared almost 34 years ago.

Six-year-old Mary Boyle, from Kincasslagh, Co Donegal, vanished without a trace while visiting her grandparents in Cashelard, 5km north of Ballyshannon.

Despite extensive searches over the years, no sign of the missing schoolgirl has ever been found.

Yesterday, members of the Boyle family were assisted by gardai in a fresh dig of a bogland site 300 metres from where little Mary had been last seen.

The dig was initiated on foot of new information from a Danish psychic hired by country singer Margo O'Donnell, a sister of Daniel, who is a friend of the family. Yan Sterns pinpointed the location where the dig should focus.

The dig will resume this morning at 10am.

Speaking at the site, Mary's mother Ann Boyle said she just wanted to bring her daughter home.

A NEW Garda website aimed at finding Ireland's missing children was launched yesterday and detectives vowed: We will do everything to find your lost love ones.

The site - www.missingkids.ie - details the tragic cases of dozens of Irish children who have vanished without trace over the past 30 years.

The site will link with a global missing children's database, available to police forces and millions of people.

Supt Kieran Kenny of the Crime Branch, who is in charge of the website, said: "We are acutely aware of the effects a missing child can have. That's why we give the investigation and search the highest priority.

"The majority of children are found or return home of their own accord. But with al investigations it is important to spread information as widely and as quickly as possible. The new website will allow that to happen.

"Extending the website to Ireland will greatly assist gardai in finding some of the most vulnerable young people in our midst and returning them home."

CIARA BREEN Missing February 1997 aged 17 Age she would be now: 24

SCHOOLGIRL Ciara was just 17 when she disappeared from the family home after kissing her mother Bernadette goodnight.

It was the eve of Valentine's Day when Ciara, from Dundalk, Co Louth, is believed to have slipped out of her bedroom window for a secret rendezvous.

She was never seen again and gardai believe she may have been murdered by a man who lured her away.

For the past seven years Bernadette, pictured, has cried herself to sleep desperate to find out what happened to her daughter.

Last year she begged for help in discovering the truth and ending the torment of not knowing.

She said: "Please let me know what happened to her."

On the night she disappeared, Ciara went into her mother's bedroom to talk to her.

Bernadette revealed: "She came in and said, 'I love you mam'.

"I had to go into hospital the following day. The doctors had found something and I was going to be told I had cancer.

"She asked was I worried and I said I wasn't that much. Ciara said if I wasn't worried then neither was she. I knew she'd been sneaking out. Ciara told me she was tired and kissed me and said, 'Goodnight mum, I love you', and I said, 'Goodnight sweetpea, I love you too'.

"They were the last words I ever spoke to her.

"I looked into her room the next morning, as I had done since she was a baby.

"She wasn't there. I went downstairs and noticed the window was off the latch. I stayed up all night waiting for her to come home, but she never did.

"I sat there drinking tea. I swore she'd be grounded for a year - but she never did come home.

"She went out with just the clothes she had on her back. Her money was still upstairs.

"All her clothing, jewellery, everything was left. If a teenager is going to go they take something.

"She was never alone and I don't want her alone now. I just want her home.

"I loved her so much and I do love her so much. She was my heart and my soul. She was my life and she still is. She is still with me."

MARY BOYLE Missing March 1977 aged six Age she would be now: 34

MARY Boyle was an angel-faced six-year-old girl when she vanished while on a visit to her grandparents in the village of Cashelard, near Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, on March 18, 1977.

She said: "Mary was only three months away from her seventh birthday, on June 14.

"She followed my brother to a neighbour's house but said she was going back and started walking towards my parents' house. She was never seen again."

Ann, 58, from Burtonport, Co Donegal, has lived half her life not knowing what happened to Mary and is desperate to discover what happened to her child before she dies.

She said: "I have feared the worst over the years. When anything comes up, I think that maybe this time something will happen to give us closure.

"Before I die I would like to know what happened to her.

"And my husband Charles feels the same. Mary's file is still open."

A Garda search, which included dredging dredging, process of excavating materials underwater. It is used to deepen waterways, harbors, and docks and for mining alluvial mineral deposits, including tin, gold, and diamonds. lakes and rivers, was launched within hours.

No trace of Mary has ever found, despite being one of the largest Garda searches in living memory.

However, detectives are adamant the investigation is still ongoing. If she were alive today, Mary would be a 34-year-old woman.

Ballyshannon Superintendent John McFadden, who is heading the investigation, said that the file will remain active until the mystery of Mary's disappearance is finally solved.

IT has been almost 18 years since Philip Cairns went missing as he walked to school.

The happy 13-year-old set off on the short walk to Colaiste Eanna after having lunch at home in Rathfarnam, Dublin.

A week after he disappeared on October 23, 1986, the case took a bizarre twist when his schoolbag turned up in a lane that had already been searched.

Gardai investigated the possibility that he was abducted and killed on the orders of a paedophile paedophile or US pedophile

However, no evidence has ever been uncovered to back up this theory.

Thousands of people have been questioned and vast tracts of land searched in the hunt for Philip. Last year, Philip's mum Alice recalled the day her son went missing.

She said: "At lunchtime Philip would come home from school. I would go as far as the gate with him and watch him going back.

"That particular day one of my daughters had a dental appointment in town, so I left Philip having his lunch.

"We were home about 7pm and one of my daughters met me at the door and said Philip wasn't home yet.

"It was unusual because Philip would come straight home every day. You always knew where he was.

"Philip wouldn't have gone away from home. He had to be either coaxed to a car or maybe misled in some way to believe that. I don't know how people could do it.

"This is going back nearly 17 years and now people in school are taught not to speak to strangers, but in those days you didn't think of saying be careful who you speak to."

The case into Philip's disappearance re-opened earlier this years after an unknown caller claimed to have kidnapped and killed him.

Detectives working with Eircom traced the call to a flat in North Dublin.

However, the man who lived there has since moved to the North and the search for him continues.
