nbc30.com![]() http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/crawford_jovanna.html Video: NBC 30 Investigates Cold Case: Jovonna Crawford http://www.nbc30.com/station/9262924/detail.html NBC 30 Investigates Cold Case: Jovonna Crawford POSTED: 5:25 pm EDT May 23, 2006 UPDATED: 9:18 am EDT May 24, 2006 Jovonna Crawford’s case is the oldest active missing persons case in Bridgeport. The 2-year-old was handed to strangers and was never seen again. It was June 5, 1981, when Jovonna vanished from her home in the PT Barnum apartments. Jovonna's mother, Mary Corbin, has been missing her daughter for 25 years and that is how long Bridgeport police have been trying to crack the case. It's a case with a strange twist. On the day Jovonna went missing, her mother was running late for work. A man she was casually seeing agreed to care for the toddler, but when Corbin returned home that evening her daughter was gone. The man caring for her said he gave Jovonna to a neighborhood boy he felt he recognized. The man told Corbin that a 10-year-old boy came to the house and said her grandmother wanted the child. Corbin said it was not uncommon for her mother or grandmother to watch her daughter, but that day neither one saw her. Detectives said the best shot at finding Jovonna is finding the boy who took her those decades ago. But, the man caring for Jovonna at the time only offered a vague description. He said the boy had little braids in his hair and was African-American. Corbin said she used to hope someone would just decide to return her daughter. Bridgeport police are hopeful Jovonna is aliv,; perhaps unaware she was ever abducted. The man caring for Jovanna when she disappeared did go to prison for handing her off. He served one year for risk of injury to a minor, but to this day has not offered any more information about what happened. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Bridgeport police at (203) 332-5544 or the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children at (800) 843-5678. http://www.acorn-online.com/joomla15/thebr...child-case.html Bridgeport police ask help from public in solving missing child case Written by The Bridgeport News Thursday, 27 January 2011 14:58 The Bridgeport Police Department is seeking information concerning the disappearance of Jovonna Stacey Crawford, who was born Aug. 29, 1979. Jovonna was reported missing on June 5, 1981 from P.T. Barnum Housing Complex, 85 Taylor Drive, Building 8, Apartment 208, by her mother, Mary Crawford. Jovonna was 21 months old at the time of her disappearance. This is the 30th anniversary of her disappearance, and Jovonna would be 32 years old this year. She was wearing a blue and white jumpsuit when she was last seen. Mary Crawford had a companion, Ronald Garrett. Crawford had two children at the time, Jovonna, and Michael Crawford Jr. On the morning of June 5, 1981, she left Jovonna in the care of Garrett and instructed him to bring Jovonna to her maternal great grandmother, Mary Moales’ apartment, also in the Housing Complex. When Mary Crawford returned later that evening, she asked Garrett if he had delivered Jovonna. Garrett told Mary Crawford an unidentified black male, about 10 years old with braids, had come to the apartment to take Jovonna to Moales’ apartment. Garrett, who did not know the boy and had never seen him before, allowed Jovonna to leave with him. Jovonna has not been seen since. There is no evidence the “boy” actually exists and Jovonna was actually handed over to him by Garrett. Garrett maintains his story and disavows any responsibility in the disappearance of Jovonna. Garrett was arrested by warrant on June 9, 1981 by Bridgeport Police Detectives and charged with risk of injury to a minor, a felony. Garrett received a one year sentence. The case is active with The Bridgeport Police Department and The National Center For Missing and Exploited Children, Case Number 600865. NCIC Missing Persons Message Number is M382953687. Reach The National Center For Missing or Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678 or Detective Joseph Badolato, the Bridgeport Police Department, 203-581 5293 or 203-581-5201. |

White case gives hope Unsolved: Mother still seeking her daughter's return from 1981 Bridgeport kidnapping Daniel Tepfer, Staff Writer Published: 02:08 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2011 * Mary Corbin's baby daughter, Jovanna Crawford, was abducted from a babysitter's Bridgeport home 30 years ago. BRIDGEPORT -- When Mary Corbin heard that Carlina White had been reunited with her family 23 years after she was kidnapped from a New York City hospital and raised in Bridgeport by a local woman, it reignited a flicker of hope that her own daughter might some day come home to her. Jovonna Stacey Crawford was 21 months old when she disappeared from her home on June 5, 1981, in the P.T. Barnum housing complex. "She was just a sweet, quiet child, a very loving child," Corbin recalled. That morning, Corbin left for work leaving her daughter in the temporary care of her then-boyfriend, Ronald Garrett. Garrett was to watch the girl for a short time and then take her to the apartment of Corbin's grandmother, Mary Moales, who lived in the same housing project. But when Corbin got home from work, Garrett told her that while he was watching the girl, a boy with braids came to the door claiming he was there to take the girl to Moales' home. The girl did not get to Moales' home, and the boy, if he ever existed, has never been identified. Garrett was later arrested in connection with the girl's disappearance and served 10 months in prison, but he continues to insist he was innocent of any wrongdoing in the case. "I have asked him, and he still keeps to the story of the 10-year-old boy with braids in his hair," Corbin said. "But I know he had something to do with her disappearance because he has never shown any remorse or even asked if he could help find her." Police Detective Joseph Badolato, who is now in charge of investigating the case, said he is also convinced that Garrett knows more about the girl's disappearance than he is saying. "I haven't found any evidence that the 10-year-old boy with braids existed," he said. Garrett now lives in Georgia and is not cooperating with the investigation. Badolato said they have developed no new evidence in the case and are working with The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the hope of getting national exposure for the case. "The White case shows that these types of cold cases can eventually be solved," he said. Corbin said she definitely believes that her daughter is alive, living somewhere else and unaware of who her real mother is. "I realize that now, after all this time, she would be on her own but I would still like to get her home. That's my dream, for her to finally be back home with me," she said. Anyone with any information about Jovonna Stacey Crawford is urged to call Detective Badolato at either 203 581-5293 or 203-581-5201 or The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678. http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/White-c...ope-1008309.php |
