http://www.nwanews.com/adg/News/154428/ Fort Smith : Letter connects Nevada inmate to 3 ’70s deaths letter sent last month has prompted Fort Smith officials to investigate the connection between a former Fort Smith man and three women hitchhikers who disappeared along Interstate 40 in the mid-1970 s. The letter, sent to Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney Steve Tabor, said the man, who is serving a life sentence in a Nevada prison, killed the women and buried their bodies in Fort Smith. Police are not revealing the inmate’s identity. No arrests have been made in the case. The inmate lived in Fort Smith when the murders occurred and still has family living there, police spokesman Sgt. Jarrard Copeland said Thursday. Copeland wouldn’t say who sent the letter to Tabor. In the letter, the women were identified as: Debbie Anderson, age 19 to 23. She was picked up on I-40 outside of Memphis during the spring or summer of 1975. The woman, described as being about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds, was on her way to Northern California and was carrying a purse and gym bag. Cheryl, last name unknown. She had a slender build, long red hair, stood around 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighed about 125 pounds. She was hitchhiking from near Oklahoma City to Nashville, Tenn., in the spring or summer of 1976. She was wearing a round, gold-and-black medallion and a leather, multicolored beaded choker. She was carrying a purse, a sleeping bag and a backpack. Pamela Williams, said to be in her late 20 s, of Columbus, Ohio. She was believed to have been picked up on the interstate near Forrest City about June 1977. Williams was said to have been running away from a husband or boyfriend. She was described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 145 pounds. She had curly blond hair and brown eyes. She also had a tattoo of a flower on her left buttock and a scar on her right knee. Fort Smith officials have asked police in Columbus to search their files for a missing persons report on Williams, but one had not been located. Copeland said police haven’t started digging for the bodies. He didn’t rule out the possibility of taking the inmate to Fort Smith to help locate them. “Ideally, that’s what we’d like to have happen,” Copeland said. No human remains have been discovered in Fort Smith that haven’t been accounted for, Copeland said. Police did some preliminary investigation into the allegations before going to Nevada, Copeland said. As part of that work, they interviewed the inmate’s family members in Fort Smith, he said. The inmate, who Copeland said is in his early 50 s, gave investigators the general locations of the bodies, Copeland said. “He mentioned things that were here in 1975 that are not here now,” Copeland said. Three Fort Smith detectives went to Nevada last week to interview the inmate. Copeland said the man cooperated with the investigators. |

So what we have here, is a man who says he kills these 3 women, and can remember things about them, such as name, etc and where he buried them, but the authorities haven't figured out who these women were and haven't found the bodies yet? Gracious me! I wonder who they are?! We should troll thru the files and see if we can find anyone matching his descriptions! |

the Cheryl made me think of Cheryl Scherer with the long red hair. But she was missing 1979. Wonder if they are certain of the dates.. Also wonder how many girls would have given their correct name in that situation. |

Good points, Anne. The information may be misleading in both directions... |

I just spoke to my cousin, and he says he has no idea and has not heard anything about it. He was also surprised that they were keeping his name out of the press, yet gave quite a bit of information about him. He said he will keep his ears open. |
