Cops seek help to ID woman tossed on road in 2006

April 07, 2011|By SALVADOR HERNANDEZ

Investigators are looking for the public's help to identify a woman who has remained a Jane Doe for more than five years.

Her body was found tossed on the side of Ortega Highway, about 10 feet below a cliff in Orange County near the Riverside County line.

Investigators have been trying to identify the woman since finding the body on Jan. 31, 2006; she had a distinctive tattoo on her forearm and distinctively decorated nails.

Orange County sheriff's officials believe she was left on the side of the highway after dying elsewhere, but they have been unable to establish a cause of death.

"She did not appear to be a victim of any crime," said Dan Salcedo, a homicide investigator.

Her body appeared to have been left for about a day before being discovered by sightseers. She was wearing blue jeans and a black Lycra top but had no shoes.

The woman is described as a Latina in her 20s or 30s, with dark, curly, mid-back-length hair. She was about 5 feet, 3 inches tall and 105 pounds.

Her nails had white hearts on them, and she had a crude tattoo of a stemmed rose and spider web on a forearm, Salcedo said.

The woman also had a Cesarean scar, which appeared to have been of Latin American origin, Salcedo said. Cesarean scars in the United States are usually horizontal, while this scar was vertical.

Investigators have touched base with Interpol and the consulates of several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, but have come up empty on leads.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Department at 714-647-7055.
