Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: December 2, 2001 from St. Clair County, Illinois
Classification: Endangered Missing
Height and Weight: 6'1, 210 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male. Graying brown hair, hazel eyes. Harris has steel rods implanted in both legs as a result of an automobile accident.

Details of Disappearance

Harris was last seen at his home in St. Clair County, Illinois on December 2, 2001. His wife and daughter were out of town at the time. His wife called and spoke to Harris at 8:00 p.m. He was supposed to start a new job at Wal-Mart at 10:00 p.m. that same night, but never arrived and has never been heard from again.
Harris's gray 1993 Ford Ranger with Illinois license plates numbered 4JMHRS was found abandoned on December 3, the day after his disappearance in a parking lot in the 3200 block of Mississippi Avenue in Cahokia, Illinois. His wallet and keys were inside. A witness reported seeing an African-American male with an inch-high afro haircut and dark-framed military-type eyeglasses sitting in the truck near a pay phone in the same parking lot where the truck was later found. The parking lot is only a short distance from Salem Tire, where Harris used to work. He had worked for several years in the tire industry. Subsequent investigation indicated that there was possible illegal activity, stolen inventory, in the tire business at about the time Harris disappeared.

Little information is available to indicate what happened to Harris. His loved ones stated he had no enemies and was not involved in criminal activity. Harris is considered to be missing under suspicious circumstances. His case remains unsolved.

Family man's disappearance still a mystery
Authorities baffled by lack of information

BY JENNIFER KAPIOLANI SAXTON AND BETH HUNDSDORFER
News-Democrat

There's only an empty space where Jim Harris used to be -- vacant spots at the Thanksgiving table, at his youngest daughter's graduation and his oldest daughter's wedding.

Jim Harris' family doesn't know whether he has died, has abandoned his family or has forgotten who he is. They have been wondering for five years.

"It's been hard going on the past five years without my dad in my life," said Jennifer Harris, who was 16 when her father was suddenly missing. Now 21, she is attending Missouri Baptist College on a soccer scholarship. "He has missed so many important things. He has missed my high school proms, my high school graduation, me going off to college, my sister's wedding and the birth of his two grandchildren."

The last time Harris' daughters talked to him was Dec. 2, 2001, when they were getting ready to come home from a soccer tournament in Memphis. He told them he would not be there when they got home that night because he was starting a new job at the Wal-Mart in Collinsville.

The next morning, Harris' 1993 Ford Ranger was found abandoned in a parking lot at 3299 Mississippi Ave. in Cahokia. Police found many of Harris' personal belongings in the truck including his wallet, Marlboro cigarettes, glasses, keys and a wedding anniversary card.

"We literally have no idea what happened to him," St. Clair County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Johnson said.

Five years ago, a witness told police a black male with about an inch-high afro, wearing a dark-framed, military-style glasses was seen sitting in Harris' truck near a pay phone in the same parking lot where the vehicle later was found abandoned.

"We were never able to ascertain who that person was in the truck," Johnson said.

The Harris case remains listed on the Sheriff's Department Web site as an open investigation. Police hope to obtain new information to help find what happened to Harris five years ago.

Harris and his wife, Vickie, would have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary later in the December he went missing.

"I try to be strong," Vickie Harris said. Harris cares for her two grandchildren, Mackenzie, 4, and Cameron, 1, during the day, and works evenings at Lanter Co. in Madison.

When Harris disappeared, the police investigator suggested he may have abandoned his family to start a new life. But Harris' older daughter, Jamie Askew, 30, doesn't believe her father would do that.

"I just think if he wanted to leave, he had plenty of chances before then," said Askew, who was married last year and had her two uncles walk her down the aisle. "If he wanted to go, he would've left a long time ago."

Johnson confirmed there is no information Jim Harris is still alive. He also acknowledged Harris' body has never been found.

Despite the five years that have passed, Harris' family continues to hope they will one day find out what happened to him.

"It's weird, sometimes I find myself looking at people in stores to see if he's there. Or if I see someone walking on the side of the road, I slow down in hopes that it may be my dad," Jennifer Harris said.

Harris' disappearance has caused financial problems for his family. Vickie Harris said the idea of divorcing him is not an option. She has been told she cannot have him declared dead until he's been missing seven years. It has been a long five years without him.

"It feels like longer to me," Vickie Harris said. "You live it everyday."
