WAVERLY - Remains have been located in the search for missing 77-year-old Bernice Hayslip.

According to Pike County Sheriff Charlie Reader, his office conducted a search warrant on 2345 Lapperell Rd., where the remains were found. Reader said while he could not confirm the remains found were human, it was very possible.

A group from Pennsylvania collected the remains to be identified, Reader said, and it may take days to weeks for them to report back to him and the Pike County coroner if they're human or not.

In a press release, Reader said his office had been searching two locations for Hayslip this week.

The press release noted Bernice Hayslip hasn't been seen or heard from since August 2016 and may have been the victim of foul play.

Reader confirmed Hayslip went missing about a year and a half ago and said the Highland County Sheriff's Office informed his office it may have a murder in the county after a traffic stop where they'd received information.

"Through the course of the investigation, we learned Hayslip had gotten ill, was in a nursing home, and her daughter had signed her out of the nursing home and brought her to a residence in Pike County about a year ago," Reader said. "We confirmed through medical providers where (Hayslip) missed medical appointments and so forth."

An unidentified person of interest was taken into custody Monday night and information from the man led investigators to two locations in Western Pike County.

Through information received through the investigation, Reader said they brought cadaver dogs onto the property to conduct a blind search, meaning he and the investigators didn't share any information with the dogs' handlers on where they suspected human remains could be found. He added that once on the property, the dogs were let off their leash and indicated at separate times where the cadaver may be.

Another person of interest, Hayslip's daughter, Tracy Sowards, 44, was taken into custody Tuesday.

According to court records, Sowards, of 112 3rd Street in Peebles, was arrested Tuesday by the Pike County Sheriff's Office and charged with credit card misuse, a fifth-degree felony. Sowards' arraignment was Wednesday morning, where her bond was set at $10,000. Her case is set for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 29 at 10 a.m.

Sowards' boyfriend, Cody A. Meddock, 26, of 2345 Lapperell Rd., Peebles, was arrested Tuesday by the Pike County Sheriff's Office and charged with fifth-degree felony credit card misuse. His case is set for arraignment on Nov. 27 at 9 a.m.

Meddock has not been named as a suspect in the search for Hayslip.

Reader encouraged anyone with information about Hayslip to contact the Pike County Sheriff's Office at 740-947-2111.
