UPDATE: Body found at Samuel Myers Park, tattoos could lead to man's identity
CARA SPOTO 2 hrs ago

RACINE — A man’s body was recovered from Lake Michigan near Samuel Myers Park on Sunday afternoon by Racine County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

According to a press release issued Sunday night, deputies were called to the park, 1 11th St., at about 2:10 p.m. after a citizen who was on the beach reported that they had seen what appeared to be a body.

First responders removed the body from the water; it was immediately determined that the person was dead, the release states.

Racine County Medical Examiner Michael Payne said early Sunday evening that the body was that of a middle-aged white male and had likely not been in the water for more than a few days.

The cause of the man’s death was not yet known on Sunday, Payne said, nor was his identity.

“We are sending him up for an autopsy,” he said. “Facial-wise we won’t be able to identify him, but fingerprints may give us a possible lead. We want to get this guy identified and back to his family.”

The press release describes the deceased as being 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing about 250 pounds with brown hair and multiple tattoos on his arms and chest, including a warrior with a horse on the right side of his chest and a beheaded warrior on a horse on the left side of his chest. On his left forearm there is a tattoo of two women, as well as numbered tattoos on each of his left knuckles, the release states.

Investigators, as well as members of the Racine County Dive Team, could be seen combing the beach and surrounding shoreline late Sunday afternoon.

Racine resident Tony Delbovo, who was watching their work from afar, said he was walking up to Pershing Park Drive from the beach at about 2 p.m. when he saw people waving sheriff’s deputies down.

“I was walking from (the beach) while they were walking down,” the 21-year-old said.

A few minutes later he saw deputies bring up a body bag, he said.

Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said Friday that he was hopeful that someone who knows the deceased will contact his office immediately.

“We are not ruling anything out,” he added. “Our priority at this moment is to identify this man.”

Anyone with information about the deceased is urged to contact Detective Evans at 262-636-3232 or Detective Scherff at 262-636-3190 with Racine County Sheriff’s Office.

Body found near Samuel Myers Park identified
JON BRINES 11 hrs ago

RACINE — The Racine County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body of a man found in Lake Michigan near Samuel Myers Park on Sunday, but are still investigating the cause of death.

The body of Christopher J. Melik, 48, of Waupaca, was recovered from the lake at about 2:10 p.m. Sunday. Sheriff’s officials said Monday that the investigation is ongoing, but it is not believed that Melik’s death is suspicious in nature.

Racine resident Steve Nelson and his girlfriend had just gone down to the water’s edge at the park to look for sea glass when they discovered Melik.

“There was no doubt that it was a body. I immediately called 911,” Nelson said. “He had blue jeans, work boots but no shirt.”

Racine County Medical Examiner Michael Payne said early Sunday that the man had likely not been in the water for more than a few days.

An autopsy was performed on Melik Monday at the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office and the cause of his death is pending toxicology and other test results.

“I’m still waiting for a report from Milwaukee,” Payne said Monday. “We’ll confer with the Sheriff’s Office and decide what information will be made public.”

Sheriff’s officials initially put out a description of Melik’s tattoos to help them identify him, but it was his fingerprints that allowed investigators to find an identity, Payne said.

“The Sheriff’s Office used automated fingerprint information systems to match his fingerprints on file with the state,” Payne said.

“The Racine County Sheriff’s Office would like to express our sincere condolences to Christopher Melik’s family during this difficult time,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release issued Monday.

Nelson said he was pleased to give a grieving family some closure.

“I’m just glad we could help,” Nelson said.
