http://www.indeonline.com/news/20170823/po...massillon-woman Police search for missing Massillon woman By Nancy Molnar The Times-Reporter By Staff Reporter Posted at 1:31 PM Updated at 1:45 PM Law enforcement in two counties are looking for missing Massillon woman. Man questioned about her disappearance is found dead. Law enforcement agencies in Tuscarawas and Stark counties are looking for a 27-year-old woman from Massillon after the father of their child killed himself in New Philadelphia on Tuesday. New Philadelphia police Detective Capt. Shawn Nelson said the Perry Township Police Department in Stark County contacted his department on Monday. At their request, New Philadelphia police went to an apartment on North Broadway on Monday afternoon to look for the missing woman and her daughter. They found 35-year-old Steven T. Stafford II and the 8-year-old, but not the mother. According to a New Philadelphia police report, the child was placed in the custody of her grandmother, the mother of the missing woman, who reported her daughter missing. She had told Perry police that her daughter, Christine Slinger, left around 7:30 p.m. Sunday with Stafford. Nelson said that police talked with Stafford, he “kind of set off alarms.” Stafford was then interviewed at the New Philadelphia Department for several hours. He was released with the understanding that he would submit to a polygraph test Tuesday, Nelson said. Officers were unable to find him on Tuesday. Their investigation took them back to the apartment on North Broadway. They arrived to find Stafford dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 10:30 a.m., Nelson said. “We know it was really close to our arrival,” Nelson said. “We heard a noise that we think could have been consistent with that, but we’re not positive. Indications upon looking at the scene makes us believe it was as we were there.” Nelson said detectives believe that after Stafford picked up Slinger at her Massillon home Sunday, he drove along State Route 800 to the area of Sandy Valley Estates near Magnolia to discuss custody of their daughter. He said that investigators noted that according to Stafford, Slinger demanded to be let out of the car at that time. Police are asking people along State Route 800 between Massillon and New Philadelphia to be on the lookout for Slinger. Anyone with information is asked to call New Philadelphia police at 330-343-4488 or the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office at 330-339-2000. |
