CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A tip from the public allowed investigators to identify the skeletal remains of a woman found in a bag in a field in Cleveland.

The body of Brooke Cameron, 40, of Cleveland was found Oct. 17 by a man searching for scrap in a field at East 55th Street and Dibble Avenue.

Days after the discovery, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the person suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Police at the time said it appeared the person had been dead for at least several weeks before the bag was found.

The office partnered with Dr. Linda Spurlock, assistant professor of anthropology at Kent State University, who created a forensic sketch of the woman's appearance, and determined key physical descriptions, including that the woman was likely of Native American or Asian descent.

The office released the sketch and description July 10 in hopes that the public would be able to identify her.

An anonymous tipster contacted a Cleveland police detective the next day after seeing the sketch in the media, and police used that tip to establish a tentative identity, according to a release from the medical examiner's office. Cameron is of Native American descent, officials said.

Police have not identified a possible suspect in Cameron's death, and no arrests have been made. No motive has been released.

Investigators learned that Cameron moved to Cleveland from New Mexico in 2015 with a boyfriend, Cleveland police Detective Kathleen Carlin said.

The boyfriend was extradited back to New Mexico later that year, but Cameron remained in Cleveland, Carlin said.

Family members grew concerned in late 2015 and early 2016 after they were unable to contact Cameron. They reached out to local police to report those concerns, Carlin said.

Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Gilson said officials don't yet know when Cameron was killed. Police believe whoever killed her dumped her remains in the field, Chief Calvin Williams said.

Investigators aren't disclosing if they've questioned the boyfriend -- or anyone else -- in connection with her disappearance and death.

Officials have contacted Cameron's mother to notify her of Cameron's death, police said.
