Body found at Chewalla Lake
Sunday, July 30th 2017, 12:44 am EDT by Mike Russell

MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - Authorities in Marshall County say they need your help to solve a possible homicide.

Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson confirms a body washed up near shore at Chewalla Lake about 11 a.m. Saturday morning - found floating face up by fishermen.

The person appears to be a while male in his 30s or 40s, but Sheriff Dickerson says it's hard to say for sure because the body may have been in the water between one and three weeks.

He did say that the case is being investigated as a possible homicide because the body appears to have a bullet wound to the head.

No one has been reported missing, so authorities don't have any leads to the identity of the victim just yet.

If you know anything about this case, you're asked to call the Marshall County Sheriff's office at 662-252-1311.

Authorities release images in Marshall County death
By William Moore Daily Journal Aug 3, 2017

HOLLY SPRINGS – Law enforcement are still searching for the truck and dog of an Arkansas man found floating in a Marshall County lake last weekend, as well as a person of interest in the death.

A fisherman discovered the partially clothed body of Samuel Deward Smith, 20, of 48 Zircon Drive, Maumelle, Arkansas, floating face up around 10:30 a.m. on July 29. There were injuries to the man’s head, and the decomposed body appeared to have been in the lake for about a week.

Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said Smith texted his sister July 25 and told her he and his dog were going to camp out at Chewalla Lake for a couple of days.

The following morning, a white male driving the missing man's truck went to the Lake Center Store, about two miles away. A deputy spotted what he believed was the man's dog on a county road not far from the lake.

“It was a collie-type but it was skittish, and the officer was not able to catch it,” Dickerson said. “We are going to put out food and see if we can trap him.”

Authorities searched the area by helicopter this week but could not locate the man's truck. It is described as an older, silver Chevy S-10 with a white driver's door and a temporary Texas license plate.

The Sheriff's Office released a still image of the person of interest. The time stamp shows the white male was inside the store July 26 at 8:59 a.m.

Officials have also released a picture of Smith's pet dog, named Kava, to aid people searching for the missing canine.

While the preliminary autopsy report listed drowning as a possible cause of death, Dickerson said trauma to Smith's head and upper body, including a large hole in the skull, lead him to believe foul play was involved.

Anyone with information on the case, the location of the dog, truck or the person of interest, is asked to call the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office at (662) 252-1311.
