Police: Remains found near Roundup could be linked to missing Billings man Posted: Jul 31, 2017 3:17 PM EDT Updated: Jul 31, 2017 9:49 PM EDT By Q2 NewsCONNECT Wanner (Facebook) BILLINGS -Investigators may have found the remains of a Billings man reported missing for the past month. Billings Police Chief Rich St. John said in a press release that badly decomposed, possible human remains were found in a shallow grave near Roundup on Sunday. St. John said efforts to find the whereabouts of Rory Wanner have centered around the Roundup area and detectives were called in to further the investigation. A team of forensic specialists from Missoula will assist with the recovery and identification. The remains were found on Juniper Road southeast of Roundup by a landowner who contacted the Musselshell County Sheriff's Office. Police announced earlier this month they are investigating Wanner’s disappearance as an active homicide. On July 1, police issued a missing person report for Wanner, 33, who had not been heard from since about 9 p.m. on June 28. Wanner was headed to a friend’s house in the Billings Heights but never arrived, police said. Wanner’s white Jeep Wagoneer was found abandoned in a residential area in the Heights the morning of July 1. Police said earlier that it was out of character for Wanner to be out of contact with friends and family for so long or to abandon his vehicle. Authorities haven’t commented on possible suspects but two people have been charged in connection with tampering of evidence. According to charging documents, the men removed evidence of an assault, including bloody clothing, from a residence on Ginger Avenue in the Billings Heights. Police believe that assault occurred June 28. Wanner was last heard from around 9 p.m. that same day. Confidential witnesses told authorities that the two men who disposed of the bloody clothing also took the entire dumpster full of evidence to an unknown location to prevent police from finding the evidence. Police carried out a search warrant at the Ginger Avenue residence and found that the home had been cleaned with bleach. Despite the cleaning, authorities were able to locate blood stains on the staircase, a speaker box and a piece of baseboard. According to charging documents, the men removed evidence of an assault, including bloody clothing, from a residence on Ginger Avenue in the Billings Heights. William Hoffert is identified as a suspect accused of tampering with evidence in an assault that matches details of Wanner’s death. Today Hoffert appeared in court on charges he tampered with GPS monitoring equipment and had luggage packed to leave town. Judge David Carter set bond at 750 thousand dollars. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Remains found south of Roundup could be linked to a missing Billings man police said Monday Police Chief Rich St. John said in a press release that badly decomposed, possible human remains were found in a shallow grave Sunday.
