Flood impacts 7-week search for Lynn Rickard JON BRINES jonathan.brines@journaltimes.com Aug 11, 2017 Dover resident John Rickard said a Racine County Sheriff’s Office investigator told him a K-9 located his missing wife’s tracks down the road behind his home on June 25. JON BRINES, jonathan.brines@journaltimes.com Horses aid in search BUY NOW Members of the Milwaukee Police Department’s Mounted Unit take to cornfields in the Dover area on July 12 as the search for missing woman Lynn Rickard, 59, continued. DOVER — The search for missing Dover woman Lynn Rickard has been delayed by the historic flooding in July as many questions remain on what could have happened to her since she walked away from her home on June 25. Her husband, John, who is now offering a $25,000 reward to locate her, said Lynn was suffering from a medical condition requiring oxygen and also had mental issues. "It is still an active search," Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said. "I've thought out of the box with this from boots on the ground to thermal imaging drones to horses and cadaver dogs. We've exhausted every resource we have." Partnering with 23 agencies from throughout the region, many volunteers have put countless hours into going over the corn fields and cattail-choked properties in the Kansasville area, where K-9s lost her scent seven weeks ago. The historic flooding of July 11-12 has also caused a significant set back as authorities who know say it could be late fall before her body is recovered. "We had experts out there with cadaver dogs that recommended we hold off until the flowage was down. The cattails are literally, 6 to 8 feet tall. With the rain we had, the mud is up to your knees. It is not drying out," Schmaling said. Considering those conditions, Schmaling is concerned his searchers may have walked right by her and may not have seen her. "The best course of action is to continue using drones," Schmaling said. Schmaling said there hasn't been any tips to guide them beyond the first day of the search, when a property owner reportedly saw Lynn bend over in a field between Schroeder Road and Schoen Road near County Line Road, about a half mile west of her home at the Hickory Haven mobile home park. "I do know that we had a witness put her out in that field with no clothing on. Our dog found a track from there. We saw her bare foot prints on the ground in that area. We tracked her for a certain period of time and lost a scent," Schmaling said. Looking for clues John Rickard told The Journal Times that investigators confiscated their computer to check it for clues. Schmaling said they didn't find anything on the computer that was "concerning" or would have given a clue to where she would have gone. "There is nothing to suspect foul play. The family has been more than cooperative. He wants his wife found," Schmaling said. "I think she is out there and she is deceased, in my opinion. I want to bring closure to the family." John Rickard said he put alarms on the doors in their home, but he insists his wife was not a prisoner in her own home. "She said a few times, 'you're locking me in. You're locking me in. I said, 'honey, if I can't see you, I can't protect you. I am a sound sleeper," John Rickard said. Lynn Rickard, 59, had reportedly wandered away just before her June 25 disappearance. "She walked out a week prior at 3 o'clock in the morning and walked 5½ miles down the road fully dressed," John Rickard said. Schmaling said deputies found her and brought her back home. "She went toward the direction of Kenosha, where she wanted to visit someone," Schmaling said. John Rickard doesn't believe a boyfriend took her away. "She didn't have time. She was with me 24/7 and she wasn't on the computer in over a year," John Rickard said. John Rickard who has been married to Lynn for 22 years, has been demonized online but his friends and family have tried to keep him insulated from it as the search continues. "They told me not even to look at it," John Rickard said. Lynn Rickard was a musician herself that loved to play the harp and guitar. She collected antiques and decorated her house rustically. Together the couple loved Civil War re-enactments and even had a Civil War-themed wedding. Medication change John Rickard said he believes trouble started when Lynn's doctor changed her anxiety medication and that led to a change in her behavior. "I took my wife into her doctor and three days later she was a different person," John Rickard said. "Lynn said, 'these pills aren't working." John Rickard has made peace with the facts of the case. "I don't think she made it the first night. It was so cold. They combed the area," John Rickard said. But he's not ready for a funeral either. He said he hold out hope that someone picked her up in a passing vehicle. But Sheriff Schmaling does not share the same view and said the idea of Lynn getting a ride, while possible, is not probable. "Her face has been plastered everywhere. Someone would see her," Schmaling said. "I think (John Rickard) is just thinking of anything that would lend itself the fact that she is alive." Schmaling points out the last time investigators tracked her, the trail lead into the brush not to the road. "Lynn was timid. She's not the type of person to run to the road and ask someone to give her a ride," Schmaling said. Schmaling said he's not ready to discuss how much the historic search has cost county taxpayers. "I've spent thousands of dollars on the search but it's not done yet. We will find her eventually. This is not about money. It is about finding someone's loved one," Schmaling said. "I would expect and demand that if my loved one was missing there would be someone on the other side who would not give up." Anyone with information on Lynn Rickard's whereabouts is asked to call the Racine County dispatch center at 262-886-2300. http://journaltimes.com/news/local/flood-i...88acb0ede9.html |
