http://www.journal-news.net/news/local-new...found-by-hiker/ Human remains found by hiker Local News Jul 2, 2017 Jeremy Arias FREDERICK, Md. — The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after human remains were found by a hiker this week off Gambrill Park Road north of Frederick Municipal Forest. The remains were found in what investigators described as a shallow grave sometime Thursday evening. It was promptly reported to the sheriff’s office, said Maj. Tim Clarke, a spokesman for the agency. Sheriff’s office investigators remained on the scene Thursday into Friday to secure the remains and stayed for some time to investigate. Investigators were initially waiting for confirmation from an anthropologist with the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to confirm whether or not the remains were human, but that changed as the investigation progressed Friday afternoon, Clarke said. “Upon further excavation of the site, they are clearly human remains — without having to have an anthropologist examine the bones, based on what we’ve found at the location,” Clarke said. The major declined to provide further details regarding what additional evidence was uncovered at the scene as of Friday afternoon. “We’re clearly now focused on the identification of the individual … [but] it’s still going to be a difficult time for us to make an identification,” Clarke said. “I don’t even have any information as to gender or anything like that at this point. That’ll be something that we’ll still need assistance from the medical examiner’s office on.” The remains were “significantly decomposed,” and appear to have been in the grave for some time, but investigators were not ready to provide any estimates as of Friday. “We’ll get a lot of help from the medical examiner’s office on how long they suspect it’s been at that location, but until we find out otherwise, it’ll be handled as a criminal death investigation — until we get a determination from the medical examiner’s office’s telling us otherwise,” Clarke said. Given the conditions under which the remains were discovered, buried and off the road north of Coxey Brown Road, detectives have every indication the investigation will remain a criminal matter, Clarke said. All of the bones found at the scene will be sent to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further analysis, Clarke said. Sheriff’s deputies and investigators received assistance at the scene from crime scene technicians and detectives from the Frederick Police Department in processing the scene Friday afternoon, said Lt. Clark Pennington, commander of that department’s Criminal Investigation Division. |
