PALM BEACH SHORES, Fla. (CBS 12) — The search for a missing Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Lieutenant is now suspended.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission called off the search for Gary Bussey as of 3:00 pm Thursday afternoon, just one day before his retirement.

FWC claims Lt. Bussey fell overboard from the rear of a 22 foot boat Wednesday around noon. It happened at the entrance to the Lake Worth Inlet. Bussey hasn’t been seen since according to FWC.

Investigators claim Bussey was trying to retrieve an unknown object from the water when he fell in with his wife still on board the boat.

Now instead of celebrating his 60th birthday, Bussey’s friends and family at Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue are praying for a miracle.

In a heartfelt email Thursday, the department confirmed the 24-year employee is an inspector in the life safety division.

FWC says the incident remains under investigation.http://cbs12.com/news/local/search-for-mis...hter-called-off

LAKE WORTH—

The boater reported missing south of the Lake Worth Inlet is a longtime Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue lieutenant who was due to retire Friday, authorities said.

Gary Bussey of Boynton Beach — who was to turn 60 years old today — was last seen at about noon Wednesday when he fell off a 22-foot Grady White powerboat, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. Bussey was reaching for something at the back of the boat when he went into the water, FWC said.

Bussey worked at Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue 24 years, most recently as a fire lieutenant, according to Deputy Chief Shon Broedell.

Bussey was a life-safety inspector for 15 years, reviewing new construction plans and checking fire extinguishers and smoke detectors for commercial buildings, Broedell said. Before that, he was a driver and an engineer for Fire Rescue.

Bussey’s wife, Tracy, was with him in the boat and was piloting the boat at an idle speed when he went missing, FWC said. The couple was returning from a fishing trip and entering the inlet at the time of the incident.

Two coast guard boats from the Lake Worth Station and one helicopter from the Miami station have assisted in the search for Bussey. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the town of Palm Beach Police Department also have taken part in the effort.

A spokeswoman for Bussey’s family declined comment Thursday afternoon. City officials also declined to speak.

Weather conditions were “normal” near the inlet Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Miami said. Winds blew from the east at about 10 mph on a steamy day, and only a moderate risk of rip currents marred the forecast, meteorologist Anthony Reynes said.

Note: This story has been updated to reflect that Bussey was a fire inspector for the past 15 years. An earlier version of the story said he was an inspector for roughly 10 years, based on information provided from Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/crime--l...vKj3iSqzIL5ODI/
