Found body still not identified
Sheriff: Clues scant in drowning case
BY MATT TROUTMAN Jul 6, 2017

TRAVERSE CITY — Mystery persists around a deceased man who was found floating in Lake Michigan.

The gray-haired, black-clothed man remained unidentified a day after authorities took his body ashore Tuesday. Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich said preliminary autopsy results released Wednesday point toward drowning as the cause of death.

But authorities have few clues to the man’s identity or what happened. Authorities on Wednesday did recover a half-sunken gray rubber dinghy near the body’s location, but the watercraft offered scant evidence as to whether it was connected to the man.

“We have had a lot of tips and we’re working on a lot of things,” Borkovich said.

The investigation began on the July 4 holiday at 10:11 a.m. when a charter boat captain called 911 to report a body in the water. Sheriff’s deputies, Glen Lake Fire and Rescue personnel and National Parks Service rangers fished the body from the water about 1.5 miles off Leland. A boat and helicopter search by U.S. Coast Guard personnel failed to find any boat wreckage or other bodies.

That left investigators with only the body for clues.

The man had gray hair and appeared between 55 and 70 years old, Borkovich said. He said the autopsy found no signs of foul play. Michigan State Police officials will let investigators use a portable fingerprint scanner, but that will only yield an identification if the man was fingerprinted before, he said.

Borkovich hopes the man’s clothing — which he considered “very odd” for summer — could yield some tips to the identity. The man wore black sweatsuit pants with two white stripes down the legs, a black jacket with white stripes on the sleeve cuffs and white high top tennis shoes.

The man also had his hood up — a potential clue about weather conditions at the time he went into the water, Borkovich said.

“It’s strange you’d be dressed that way this time of year,” Borkovich said.

Autopsy results indicated the man could have floated in the water for about a week — a longer period of time than authorities initially believed. Temperatures from the past week recorded by a nearby weather station show a few cooler days during that span, said Jim Keysor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Keysor said low temperatures Sunday reached 57 degrees. He said the lows on Monday and Tuesday mornings plunged to 51 degrees.

“It was relatively chilly for July,” he said.

The temperature only reached a lower point a week before the body’s discovery. Keysor said the morning temperature on June 27 hovered in the upper 40s. He said lows remained in the 60s until Sunday. Weather for the week also remained relatively calm, aside from rain and 25 mph winds on June 29, he said.

Borkovich said investigators will look at weather patterns and currents as they try to piece together what happened to the man. He said they don’t know whether the man was washed from near the shore or floated from across the lake itself. Authorities have reached out to their counterparts in Wisconsin, he said.

The gray dinghy could help provide some answers.

“We’re not sure, but it very possibly could be related,” Borkovich said.

A sport fisherman spotted the watercraft about 8.3 nautical miles from where the body was found, Borkovich said. He said it was dark gray, with a black floor and black body. One pontoon sank beneath the water while another kept it afloat, along with an empty cooler.

The dinghy was unregistered and authorities couldn’t trace the serial numbers on its motor and hull.

“If it had that we’d know who it belonged to,” Borkovich said.

No Name Yet on Mystery Body Found July 4 in Lake Michigan
July 27, 2017, at 1:13 p.m.

LELAND, Mich. (AP) — More than three weeks later, a northern Michigan sheriff is calling it a mystery: A man's body in a heavy coat remains unidentified after it was discovered in Lake Michigan.

The body of a white man was found on July 4, about a mile (1.61 kilometers) from Leland Harbor in Leelanau County, a popular summer destination. The man drowned and appeared to be between 50 and 70. He had no identification.

A small rubber boat was discovered about 8 miles (12.8 kilometers) from the body, but any connection is unknown. The sheriff's office released a photo of the boat and a sketch of what the man probably looked like before his death.

"Nobody's made any inquiries" about a missing relative, Sheriff Mike Borkovich said Thursday. "We're all frustrated. We want to be able to identify this individual to provide dignity for him and give his family closure. Somebody somewhere knows who he is."

The man's clothing was all black, and he was wearing a heavy coat. A money clip had less than $50.

The man had extensive dental work. Borkovich said anyone who knows him might be able to lead investigators to a dentist who could help confirm an identity. A fingerprint is being analyzed, too.

Anyone with information can call (231) 256-8800.

Body found floating in Lake Michigan identified
by Michelle NemmersWednesday, August 9th 2017

LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- After more than a month, the body that was found floating in Lake Michigan on the Fourth of July near the Leland Harbor has been identified.

The sheriff's office says the victim is 67-year-old Marcus Brandon Adams, originally from the United Kingdom. Positive identification has been made through dental records.

According to the sheriff's office, Adams had been living in the Washington D.C. area since 2011 and his current immigration status is in question.

A friend of Adams, who also lives in Washington D.C., reported Adams missing to the Washington D.C. Police on July 20.

Adams apparently sent suicide letters to friends in Oregon which were received on July 8.

Washington D.C. detectives investigating this missing person complaint contacted the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office on Aug. 6 after learning of the unidentified drowning victim.

Since that time, the sheriff's office has been working with the Washington D.C. authorities and the Medical Examiner's Office of Western Michigan School of Medicine to positively identify the man.

The investigation revealed that Adams made his way to the Ludington area and stayed several days at a small resort.

There, Adams got a small Bris inflatable watercraft and left the resort telling people he was going to explore the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The watercraft is believed to be the dingy located off North Manitou Island on July 4 about 8.3 miles from where Adams was found.

Adams has no known relatives in the United States and notification of possible relatives aboard is being investigated.

The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office wishes to thank all the concerned citizens for tips received in helping us determine the identity of the victim.
