Human Skeletal Remains Discovered Near Firefly Music Festival Grounds During Event
Posted by Andrew O'Brien on Saturday June 17th, 2017

Delaware State Police are investigating after an attendee at this weekend’s Firefly Music Festival found human skeletal remains in the area surrounding the festival grounds on Thursday evening. According to the report about the incident on Delaware Online, a festival-goer wandering the site’s wooded areas discovered the remains and contacted the authorities. The identity of the person whose remains were discovered is still unknown. The forensic investigation is still in its early stages, as authorities continue to investigate on the scene. You can watch a news clip about the incident below:

Fortunately for those in attendance, news of the grisly discovery was virtually unnoticed within the festival. “I’m extremely surprised,” attendee Kyla Beckvermit, an 18-year-old from Cornwall, New York, told Delaware Online, “I’m definitely concerned. It would have been nice to know.” Her friend Gabby Wheeler, a 24-year-old from Wheeler, New York, was more interested than upset by the discovery. “I watch a lot of missing people videos on YouTube,” she said. “If they said it was skeletal remains, that probably means the body has been there awhile. But it’s weird that it was so close.”

While finding human remains onsite at a music festival is obviously less than ideal, the as-of-yet unexplained death likely was not connected to the event itself.

Anyone with any information in reference to this incident is asked to contact Detective D. Blomquist at (302) 698-8426. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333, via the internet at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.”

Firefly Music Festival continues today with performances from Bob Dylan, Chance The Rapper, The Weeknd, T-Pain, Wale, Capital Cities, and more and sets from Nahko & Medicine For The People, Phantogram, Muse and more on tap for the festival’s final day tomorrow.

Human remains discovered at Firefly Music Festival
TOM KNAPP | Staff Writer Jun 17, 2017

Concertgoers enjoy entertainment at the Firefly Music Festival in a file photo from 2013.
Human remains were discovered Thursday evening at the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, Delaware.

The remains were found by a concertgoer in a wooded area about half a mile from the venue’s main entrance, according to DelawareOnline. Delaware State Police identified the skeletal remains as human, police said in a statement Friday afternoon.

The four-day festival is being held on 105 acres near Dover International Speedway. The remains were found near a private area used for parking and camping, the news agency reported.

The remains have not been identified, police said.

The festival, which draws about 90,000 people each year, includes Bob Dylan, Kesha and Weezer among its headliners this year. DelawareOnline reported that few people inside the festival grounds — many of whom are visiting from outside the area — seem aware of the ongoing police investigation.

The woods where the remains were found are owned by Dover International Speedway, DelawareOnline reported, and the area where the body was found is close to where NASCAR fans camped two weeks ago.

Delaware State Police spokesman Richard Bratz said in a statement Friday night that the investigation has been turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science.

Anyone with information is asked to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or leave a tip online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.

State Police: identification found with skeletal remains over Firefly weekend
Jul 12th, 2017 · by Ian Gronau ·

DOVER — Delaware State Police confirmed that identification was found with the skeletal remains discovered near the Firefly Music Festival grounds on June 15 during the event.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” said State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier. “Identification was found with the body, although we will not release the identity until the person is positively identified through the Division of Forensic Science.”

Although specific information about the identification is being withheld until the conclusion of the investigation, Mr. Fournier said “family notifications have been made.”

An inquiry sent to the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security on the status of the autopsy had been acknowledged but not answered as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Delaware State Police conducted an initial investigation after the human skeletal remains were located on the night of June 15 in a wooded area near the Firefly Music Festival, which was underway.

Authorities said the following day that a preliminary investigation determined that at approximately 7 p.m., human remains were discovered by a person walking through the wooded area east of Leipsic Road near Marley Lane.

According to the Associated Press, the person, who was attending Firefly, contacted troopers and notified them of the discovery. Detectives responded to the wooded area and confirmed the human skeletal remains.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science is assisting with the investigation.

Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective D. Blomquist at 698-8426. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.”
