Blount County remains still being investigated.

BLOUNT COUNTY - Friends of a missing Blount County woman fear the worst after unidentified human remains were discovered near her home.

Mary Ruth Walker disappeared in early May. Knox County forensic experts conducted an autopsy Saturday after human remains were found near Butterfly Gap Loop near Maryville.

That is the same street Walker lives on.

Walker is an avid quilter and spends most of her Thursdays at Mountain Creek Quilt Shop in Greenback. Her friends are convinced the remains found were Walker’s.

"If this is Ruthie, if it's her, we need to bury her and we need to get her in a place beside her husband so she can rest in peace," shop owner Theresa Ayers said.

When Ayers opened the shops on Saturday, she said the place was full.

“[There were] people coming to give us hugs because they knew how much she was a part of our lives,” Ayers said.

On Saturday morning, Ayers placed a white chair with a purple ribbon in front of the store to honor her friend.

"I feel like with a chair, then Ruthie would always be here. We won't forget her. She can sit out here under the stars,” she said.

The group is planning to make a quilt in memory of their friend.

Daughter of missing woman charged with criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse
Human remains found in Blount County
By WVLT Staff | Posted: Fri 4:39 PM, Jun 09, 2017 | Updated: Sun 12:23 AM, Jun 11, 2017

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A 47-year-old Maryville woman is charged in connection with the human remains found on her property Friday, according to Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong.

Sheriff Berrong said Karen Walker Headrick, is charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse.

Investigators said Headrick was taken into custody Friday morning and served with warrants Saturday evening.

Headrick is being held on $1,250,000 bond pending a hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court at 1:30 p.m. June 12.

Authorities said BCSO investigators will release the identity of the deceased at the appropriate time.

The arrest comes after deputies located a burn pile on Headrick’s property that contained human remains.

Throughout the course of the investigation, deputies said investigators located a makeshift grave a short distance away from the burn pile.

Officials said additional evidence found at Headrick’s residence consisted of chemicals that were used in an attempt to conceal the decomposing body.

The remains were found next to the house of Mary Ruth Walker, a 69-year-old woman who went missing more than a month ago, and behind the home of Walker's daughter, Karen Walker.

Mary Ruth Walker filed an order of protection against her daughter in 2012. The Blount County Sheriff's Office said investigators looked into a domestic history between the two and searched Karen's house three times but found nothing.

Deputies said they searched Mary Ruth Walker's 100 acre property before and found nothing until the remains were discovered on Friday. Neighbors said they were shocked that human remains were found so close to homes considering how many times the area had been searched in the weeks before.

Walker's sisters said they have no doubt the remains belong to Mary Ruth Walker.

MARYVILLE (WATE) – Experts with the Knox County Regional Forensics Center have identified the remains found in Maryville last week as Mary Ruth Walker, 69, who was reported missing on May 9.

The remains were found Friday in a burn pile on property belonging to Walker’s daughter, Karen Walker Headrick, off Butterfly Gap Loop Road. A makeshift grave was found a short distance away and additional evidence was found inside Headrick’s residence that she had allegedly used chemicals in an attempt to conceal the decomposed body.

Headrick was arrested on charges of criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse.

Walker’s siblings said the pair had a troubled relationship, with Walker even filing an order of protection against her own daughter in 2012. The report documented that Headrick punched Walker in the face and she had to be treated at the hospital.

Headrick is scheduled to appear in court on July 10 in Blount County.
