Relatives of missing Winston-Salem woman fear wrongdoing in her disappearance
By John Hinton Winston-Salem Journal May 16, 2017

Two relatives of a missing Winston-Salem woman believe that wrongdoing was involved in her disappearance 2½ months ago and fear that she might be dead.

Winston-Salem police are investigating the disappearance of Mary Magdalene Smith, who was reported missing on May 3 from an eastern Winston-Salem home. Smith was last seen on March 1, and her last known location was at Roadway Inn at 3801 N. Patterson Ave.

Doris Peoples Hairston, Smith’s sister, and Faye Hairston, Doris Hairston’s daughter, said Monday that they believe Mary Smith was killed by someone who might have also stolen her money.

“Since she’s been gone this long, I think somebody killed her,” Doris Hairston said. “She didn’t bother anyone, and she stayed to herself. Everybody is very upset about it.”

Officer James Hayden is investigating Smith’s disappearance, they said, adding that they believe a police detective also should be assigned to the case.

Neither Hayden nor senior police administrators could be reached Monday to comment on the case.

The relatives said that Smith, 61, might not be alive because police haven’t determined if Smith has cashed her April Social Security disability check, and she hasn’t used any of her food stamps. Doris Hairston has her sister’s May check.

“When her check comes, she is right there at the mailbox waiting for it,” Faye Hairston said. “It’s not like her not to call or pick up her money.”

The Hairstons also fear for Smith’s well-being because she has chronic heart disease and a mental disorder, they said.

Doris Hairston and her daughter said they last saw Mary Smith after she had cashed her March disability check for nearly $600. They said that a male acquaintance of Smith drove her to Roadway Inn on March 1.

“I told her not to go there,” Doris Hairston said. “It hurts me because I don’t know where she’s at. I’m doing all I can trying to locate her.”

After Smith was reported missing, Doris Hairston showed Smith’s picture to the employees at the motel. One employee indicated that Smith was last seen on the motel balcony with three men, Doris Hairston said.

“We think someone did something to her,” Faye Hairston said. “I’m very worried. It bothers me all day.”

Hayden spoke to the employees at the motel about Smith disappearance, said Jay Raol, the motel’s manager. The motel has a different surveillance video system than it had when Smith was at the motel, he said.

Its current system doesn’t have video footage of when she was there on March 1, Raol said. He has asked the contractor for the hard drive of the previous system for a video of that day, he added.

On May 7, the Hairstons were joined by the Rev. Louis Threatt, the senior pastor at their church, Messiah Community Christian Church, and others, and they searched the woods behind the motel in hopes of finding Smith.

The group found no signs of Smith, the missing woman. Threatt said he helped search for Smith after Doris and Faye Hairston approached him after the Sunday service. After they prayed, they went to look for Smith.

“Family members know when something isn’t right,” Threatt said. “Their hearts are hurting when their loved one is missing.”
