Authorities solve mystery of last unidentified victim in 1992 Los Angeles riots 25 years later APRIL 29, 1992 FILE PHOTO This April 29, 1992 photo shows several buildings in a Boys Market shopping center fully engulfed in flames before firefighters arrive as rioting erupted in South-Central Los Angeles. (REED SAXON/AP) BY JESSICA SCHLADEBECK NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Saturday, May 20, 2017, 10:58 AM The last remaining unidentified victim among the dozens who died during the deadliest riots in U.S. history has been identified. For 25 years, authorities have referred to a body burned beyond recognition during the 1992 Los Angeles riots as John Doe No. 80. But thanks to a lone fingerprint lifted from the scene, authorities have identified the remains as those of Armando Ortiz Hernandez, the Los Angeles Times reported. The man's body was burned so badly that the coroner’s office was left with only his teeth and a partial print from his middle finger. Every couple of years, investigators would run the print in hopes of finding a match — but, until now, have been unsuccessful. “We tried many, many times over the years,” Los Angeles County Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter told the newspaper. “Every couple of years someone would pick up the file. We finally did it.” Rodney King dead: Key figures of 1992 Los Angeles riots Arson, assault, and widespread protests spilled into the streets of Los Angeles when a jury acquitted the officers police officer. By the second day of protests, dozens of business establishments were set on fire and completely destroyed. 38 PHOTOS VIEW GALLERY The police assault of Rodney King and the LA riots that ensued Hernandez, 18 at the time of his death, was killed by “inhalation of smoke, soot, carbon monoxide and thermal burns,” Winter said Friday. His body was found May 2, 1992 inside a torched Pep Boys auto shop, set aflame during the infamous South Los Angeles unrest. Tensions sparked by the acquittal of four white police officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King escalated into one of the deadliest race riots in American history. Fifty-three people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured in several violent days. Hernandez's name now joins a list of 23 unsolved riot-related homicides. Because the fire at the auto shop where he was found had been burned down intentionally, his death was deemed a murder.http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/a...ticle-1.3181399 |
