Human remains found in western Sedgwick County, sheriff’s office says
BY AMY RENEE LEIKER

A landowner mowing property in western Sedgwick County on Monday afternoon came across what’s believed to be human remains, an official with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lt. Lin Dehning said it’s too early to tell the age and gender of the person found and whether foul play was involved. The remains were discovered at about 3:20 p.m. in a field south of a house in the 14800 block of West 13th Street North, just outside the Wichita city limits near 151st Street West.

“It’s a farm property, and the house until recently was being rented,” Dehning said. After coming upon the remains, the landowner immediately stopped mowing and called 911, he said.

“We are now working to determine the identity of those remains. And once we determine the identity, we will determine the circumstances surrounding the person’s death,” Dehning said. He had no other details to offer late Monday afternoon.

Forensic investigators with the sheriff’s office were at the scene around 5 p.m. Monday. The coroner’s office was expected to be there later.

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says the remains found on a farm property on Monday were those of a homeless man.

Lt. Lin Dehning said investigators are still working to identify the man and that there is no evidence to indicate foul play.

The remains were found at around 3:20 p.m. in 14800 block of West 13th Street, near 151st Street West.

Previous story:

Sedgwick County Sheriff's Investigators searching for clues after possible human remains were found on a farm. The land owner was mowing when he discovered the remains.

"That goes too show what happens when you are kind of out in farm area, anything can really happen," said Nolan Schoenhofer.

Schoenhofer was with friends when he heard about it and they hurried home.

"I saw it was real so I hurried home and just got home. Saw all the cop cars and the news and still don't really know what's happening," said Noah Sizemore.

"We walk down this road a couple of times and we go out for runs and just play catch down the street and stuff like that and to think that was out there is kind of weird," said Schoenhofer.

The Sheriff's Office says the house is vacant, just recently the renters moved out. Lieutenant Lin Dehning says it's too early to tell age and gender of the person found.

"We will determine or attempt to determine the identity of the those remains and once we determine the identity we will determine the circumstances surrounding the person’s death," said Dehning.

The teenagers who hang out in the neighborhood will not look at the home the same way again.

"I used to hit golf balls over there and got get them and I always kind of got a not really creepy feeling, but a farm house, kind of set back, and kind of had the weird horror movie feeling. Didn't really think much of it," said Sizemore.

Human remains found in Sedgwick County field identified
BY AMY RENEE LEIKER
JULY 28, 2017 5:58 PM

The remains of a transient man found by a landowner mowing in a Sedgwick County field this spring have been identified as Douglas O. Collins.

Collins, who did not have a local address, would have been 60 years old when his body was discovered on May 15 near a home in the 14800 block of West 13th Street, just outside of Wichita city limits, said Lt. Lin Dehning, spokesman for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

As of Friday, the cause and manner of his death had not yet been released. But authorities immediately after the discovery said investigators had no evidence that foul play was involved.

Because Collins’ body was in an advanced state of decomposition, the sheriff’s office called on a forensic anthropologist to help identify him and what led to his demise. Dehning said Friday that the remains have been sent to family members of Collins who live around Atlanta, Ga.
