Franklin police continue search for man reported missing
by NBC 10 NEWSSunday, May 14th 2017

Police in Franklin resumed a search early Monday morning for a man who was reported missing.

The parents of 20-year-old Michael Doherty reported him missing Sunday when he failed to return home.

Police said Doherty was last seen in the Phyllis Lane area at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after attending a gathering with some friends.

Franklin police said the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council is assisting in the search.
The Metro-LEC is a mutual aid consortium formed by 45 police agencies in the Boston area to pool resources.

"These agencies work together to provide unique and highly specialized law enforcement resources to all of its member communities," Franklin police said in a statement.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police Department is also at the scene.

"These officers are highly trained in navigating wooded and water laden areas, and have access to resources to make searching these areas possible," Franklin police said.

Doherty is described as a white man, 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with a Nike symbol, black pants and sneakers.
Doherty is a Duke University junior.

Police are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the Franklin Police Department at 508-528-1212.

Police found missing Duke student's shoe, shirt near Massachusetts swamp
Posted 6:43 a.m. today

FRANKLIN, MASS. — Authorities are searching for a Duke University student who went missing after a party in Massachusetts.

Michael Doherty, a 20-year-old rising junior in the university's engineering school, was reported missing Sunday after attending a party.

On Monday, police found Doherty's sneaker and shirt at the edge of a swamp.

Friends told police it was raining hard and it was dark when Doherty left the party, thinking he could walk to his parent's house. Doherty's phone wasn't charged.

His parents reported him missing when he didn't show up.

Duke University officials have released a statement saying their thoughts are with Michael and his family for a "quick and positive outcome."

Body found in Franklin identified as missing college student
WCVB | Updated: 10:58 AM EDT May 22, 2017

FRANKLIN, Mass. — A body found in Franklin has been identified as a missing 20-year-old college student, officials confirmed Monday.

Michael Doherty, of Franklin, was found dead in a wooded area between Jimmy Street and Interstate 495 by two civilians on Saturday, according to police.

The Duke University student went missing after he left a party at 1:30 a.m. on May 14.

While the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet issued a final report, preliminary information from that office indicates that no signs of trauma or foul play were evident.

The cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending additional testing.

“Our first thought is with Michael’s family and friends,” District Attorney Michael Morrissey said. “To them we extend our sincere condolences. I would be remiss if I did not thank the Franklin Police, regional and state law enforcement and so many in the community for their days and days of sustained searching in difficult terrain. The result was not what we had hoped.”

The body was discovered only about 200 yards away from the house on Phyllis Street where Doherty was last seen.

Searchers found Doherty’s shirt and sneakers in a swampy area off of Oak Street Extension, in the direction of his Catherine Avenue home.
